Lesson from Dagwood Bumstead July 8, 2020

In the cartoon “Blondie,” her husband Dagwood said that according to a study, hot tea is a healthier beverage than coffee. So, Blondie asked, “Do you want to start drinking tea, Dear?” “Nope,” said Dagwood, “I like coffee. I’ll just stick with coffee and wait for a study that I can live with.” And isn’t that often the way many of us respond when faced with life’s choices? We wait for that which pleases us because we want to do it our own way. But that can be a very unwise response, especially when it pertains to things eternal. Wise Solomon once said, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” And Jesus, referring to the next life, said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.”

Life—A Gift from God July 6, 2020

Have you ever thought about the mystery of growth? For example, how does a seed become a flower? How is human life formed in a mother’s body? We have accumulated much scientific knowledge about cells and DNA, but there is much we do not know. What pushes things to grow to a certain size and then stop? Why does a cell divide and multiply? That is a miracle that only God can bring about. Jesus once said, “No one can add a single cubit to his stature.” Life and growth cannot be explained fully by humans, no matter how intelligent they may be. Only God has the answers to life, and as He has given physical life, so He longs to give us all spiritual life. He said, “I have come that they may have life…” He later said, “And I give them eternal life and they shall never perish.”

Anonymous and Not Responsible July 3, 2020

Anonymous and Not Responsible July 3, 2020
CNN producer Breanna Hare once said, “Online, you can project whatever identity you like. But for some people, it’s easier to have no identity at all. A new social networking site caters to those who prefer anonymity.” Such unnamed people don’t worry about who’s going to read what they wrote, or what’s going to happen. It is apparently tempting to some to vent anonymously. But we are all ultimately responsible for what we say or do. And that includes our responsibility to our Maker for our decisions. The most serious responsibility any of us has in this life is to recognize Jesus as the Son of God, believe that He died on the cross for our sins, and receive Him as our personal Savior. He once gave this promise: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

The Greatest Purchase July 2, 2020

It is known simply as a “chicken cup,” one of the most expensive Chinese cultural relics ever auctioned. It is a rare wine cup fired in the imperial kilns of China’s Ming Dynasty more than 500 years ago. It sold for an astounding 36 million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong. Amazing! But there has been a much greater and costlier purchase. The Bible informs us that Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins with His life when He went to the cross. Paul the Apostle was inspired to write: “God demonstrates His own love toward us in that when we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The “chicken cup” will no doubt benefit its buyers when it is resold, but the purchase made by Christ brings eternal benefits for all who receive the gift of everlasting life, which He offers to those who sincerely ask for it.

Abraham Lincoln, Man of Faith July 1, 2020

Abraham Lincoln once said, “I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.” The Psalmist declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Genesis adds, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Intelligent design requires an intelligent designer. For example, oxygen drawn into the lungs is essential to the function of the mind. Who makes this possible? Is it all just by chance? Does a clock accidentally make itself? There is only one logical explanation for creation—an intelligent, master designer: the God of the Bible.
