Our Vast Universe October 19, 2020

Glen Roberts, writing in the Halifax Chronicle Herald, tells of being asked by his eight year old granddaughter, “Poppy, how big is the universe?” Roberts explained that the universe is so large that it must be measured in light years. His granddaughter responded, “That is pretty big isn’t it?” Yes, the universe is vast. David, the Psalmist made a remarkable statement in Psalm 8, writing, “When I consider your heavens, what is man that you are mindful of him?” But God is not only “mindful” of us, He also loves us. John the Apostle was inspired to write, “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him.” That “living” refers to eternal life. It is available to all.

Time and Eternity October 16, 2020

Aline Chretien, John Turner, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg are just three famous people who have died recently, reminding us that time is passing. But even if still young, let’s remember these words of Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say I have no pleasure in them.” We are not going to be here forever. David the Psalmist wrote, “…As for man, his days are like grass, as a flower of the field, so he flourishes, for the wind passes over it and it is gone.” We are however, going to live somewhere. Where that is depends on our relationship with Jesus. John, writing in the New Testament explained, “This is the testimony, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

Immortality October 14, 2020

We are told that Ponce De Leon went to Florida in the 1500s to search for a spring with waters having the power of restoring youth. The idea of physical immortality is fascinating. Dr. Phillip Minton of Stanford University wrote in his book “The Immortality Enzyme” that soon there will be an enzyme on the market that will be used to fight aging, cancer and heart disease. While we cannot achieve immortality on our own, an immortal state is freely available. Jesus promised, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” So, a fountain of youth leading to physical immortality is not going to happen. But receiving eternal life? That can happen if we trust in the One who promised, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

Starting Over on Thanksgiving October 12, 2020

Perhaps this Thanksgiving, you are aware that you have not lived a life of gratitude in spite of the good life and blessings you have and are wanting to start over. In his book” Come Before Winter”, Dr. Charles Swindoll made the following insightful statement.- “To start over, you have to know where you are… maybe you are ready to change your mind about … your lifestyle, the next life, and God. “Well said, Dr. Swindoll. King David, speaking for us all, in reference to man’s fallen nature, wrote in Psalm 51, “ Behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin my mother conceived me.” Thankfully, when we sincerely want to start over, Jesus offers us forgiveness for the past and hope for the future. Referring to the door of each life, He said, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.”

Counterfeit Message October 9, 2020

Counterfeit money, CDS, DVDS are everywhere, sometimes deceiving even the most wary. We all need to be aware of falsehood in every form, but especially when it come to things eternal. Isaiah the prophet was inspired to write, “ Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” He referred to those who present a counterfeit message. Today many falsely teach that we have a “Divine nature”, and that by fanning our imagined innate goodness, we become Christians. This is a counterfeit message. God’s Word teaches that we are all part of a fallen nature, since “All have sinned” and “There is none righteous, not one.” Thankfully however, Jesus has told us, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

A brave Soldier October 7, 2020

On December 4, 2007, a 19-year-old soldier, serving in Iraq saw a grenade being thrown from a house top. Manning the machine gun in the turret of his Humvee, he tried to deflect the explosive, but it fell inside the vehicle. Though he had time to jump to safety, he threw his body over the grenade in a selfless act that saved the lives of four fellow soldiers. This act of sacrifice illustrates what Jesus did for us when He took the punishment for our sin on the old rugged cross. Paul the Apostle wrote concerning Jesus’ death in our place, “… perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Those four soldiers will never forget the soldier who died for them. We should never forget Christ’s death for us.

Message in a Bottle October 5, 2020

It was scooped up from the sea after 98 years – a bottle with a message. Fisherman Andrew Leaper found the bottle, which was part of a government experiment to map the under currents of the sea. At the time, it was the oldest message ever recorded in a bottle. But there is another much older message, not in a bottle, but in a book.. In this remarkable book, we read many wonderful messages. Here’s one – “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” That’s the famous John 3:16 from the Bible, God’s Word. God did all this that we might be forgiven. The 98-year-old message in the bottle is remarkably interesting. But this timeless message in the Bible can be the means of preparing us for the next life.

Going the Wrong Way October 2, 2020

About 355 North American drivers die annually from crashes caused by travelling the wrong way Some are drunk, some fleeing police, some take the wrong ramp. But the results are tragic. Most of us know that the Bible also talks about two ways, and two destinations. We are all given a choice, either the way that leads to life or the way that leads to destruction. One way involves acceptance of God’s way, the other involves refusing God’s way. Proverbs reminds us that “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Jesus also spoke of that broad popular way and that narrow less travelled way. But He made it crystal clear what our choice about eternal things should be when he said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Hurricane Season 2020 October 1, 2020

We are now in the dangerous and destructive Atlantic hurricane season, with hurricanes given names like Paulette, Teddy and Sally. During these times we are urged to prepare by covering window glass to prevent shattering, removing all outdoor furniture, and taking other safeguards. Preparedness is always a good idea, but not just for physical disasters. God’s Word reminds us that “we know not what a day may bring forth.” Amos, in the Old Testament warned, “Prepare to meet your God.” He was referring to preparation for the next life with which each of has an appointment. That preparation takes place when we receive Christ, Who “died for our sins” as our personal Saviour . Then, God’s Word promises “having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

MISSED OPPORTUNITY Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Magnificent violinist Joshua Bell played to a sold-out audience in Boston, where seat costs averaged $100 each. Two days later, he played incognito on a $3.5 million dollar Stradivarius violin for 45 minutes to thousands at a Metro station in Washington, D.C. There was no recognition and almost no tips. Why? Nobody recognized Bell as one of the best musicians in the world. John, in his gospel, wrote about our Savior: “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” “But as many as received Him, to them he gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name.” Are we missing out on a relationship with the greatest person who ever lived? He is waiting to meet us
