Diamonds January 22, 2020

Diamond specialist Dr. Leonard Reiffel believes that the value of diamonds depends on their perfection. He wrote, “Flaws are particularly distressing when an imperfect diamond is turned into a finished gem.” but now, science offers hope even for flawed diamonds. A hole is drilled at the location of the flaw and chemicals or other methods are then used to remove the flaw. This beautifully pictures how the human race has been flawed by sin and no amount of polishing or cutting can remove the sin problem–only the laser beam of God’s light can do that. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” When you and I are willing to admit that we are spiritually flawed, the next step is to ask God to shine His light into our lives. Then He will make something beautiful of our lives.

Fearfully and wonderfully Made January 20, 2020

Dr. David Jeremiah in his book “Sanctuary” has written, “In every cell of your body, there is enough to recreate your adult person as if no other cells were necessary.” He continued, “ If DNA instructions of one cell were written out, it would take a one thousand, six-hundred-page book to put all that information down. And yet God put this all in a cell so tiny that one cannot see it without magnification.” Like David of old, we should all be praying, “Search me O God and know my heart… and see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” Yes, you and I have been “fearfully and wonderfully made” by a loving Creator who wants us to have a close relationship with Him. To make that possible, He gave His Son Jesus to die in our place on the cross and is waiting to forgive and cleanse us and give us everlasting life. We need only to ask Him.

Blind Spots January 17, 2020

Colin Weatherby has written in Psychology Today “Our powers of prediction are 30% more accurate when gauging the performance of others than our own.” Why is this? Because we base our judgment of others on hard evidence but our own failures we excuse as aberrations. In self-analysis, we are all guilty of blind spots. Even more serious, however, is a blind spot in regard to eternal matters. Many of us have convinced ourselves that death ends it all, there is no life after death. Serious blind spots indeed! Did you know that Jesus spoke more of Hell than He did of Heaven. He also, said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.” Someone once wisely said, “There is none so blind as he who will not see.” Let’s avoid that kind of blind spot.

The Affordability Delusion January 15, 2020

The newspaper headline screamed, “THE CURSE OF THE AFFORDABILITY DELUSION.” The article then stated that you won’t see higher prices reflected in the down payments or in the monthly loan payments. Why? -because car loans for example, are being extended to as long as eight years these days. Then the writer of the article, Rob Carrick concluded, “Where we get into trouble is believing the cost of debt is measured only by our monthly payments. “That’s delusional,” Carrick declares. “This thoughtful article reminded me of a rhetorical question which Jesus once asked. “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world but lose his own soul? The wise among us will live their lives not only for the present but with eternity’s values in view, because we are all going to live somewhere forever.

The Eyes Have It January 13, 2020

If you were to walk twice around the world, you would have covered the same distance as the miles of arteries and veins in the human body. But there is only one place where we can see blood vessels and that is in the retina at the back of the eye. Increasingly, doctors are able to diagnose diseases such as the hardening or narrowing of blood vessels, small clots and other problems by retinal examination. Like the Psalmist, speaking for us all said, God “formed my inward parts…covered me in my mother’s womb…I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” And He has also diagnosed our spiritual and moral problems. Sin separates us from God but there is a cure. “Christ died for our sins.” He became the perfect substitute. By acknowledging our spiritual bankruptcy and accepting His sacrifice on the cross, we can become God’s children. I have accepted His diagnosis and cure. Have you?

Lasting Treasures January 10, 2020

We love our “stuff.” This is evident from TV shows such as “American Pickers”, “Storage Wars” and the grandfather of them all, “The Antiques Roadshow.” Many people try to get rid of unwanted possessions by yard sales, while others dream of a valuable heirloom from great grandmother’s attic. Many succumb to the lure of the treasure hunt at one time or another. However, the greatest treasure is never found in our possessions. Paul the Apostle, writing in the New Testament desired that “people may know the mystery of God, namely Christ in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” That’s because when we are properly related to Christ, by putting our faith in Him, we have the twin treasures of forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. The critical question each one of us needs to ask is “Have I discovered these treasures yet?

Living for time, not Eternity January 8, 2020

When Bertha Adams, 71, died alone in West Palm Beach Florida, the Coroner’s report read “Cause of death…malnutrition.” She weighed just 50 pounds. But she left behind over a million dollars in two Banks. Her sad story brings to mind a Bible truth that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” And though we do not know what her spiritual condition was when she passed away, the rhetorical question of Jesus comes to mind, when He asked, “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, but lose his own soul?” Bertha Adams’ life and death encourage us not to live for this world alone, but with eternity’s values in view. The Christian can happily sing, “This world is not my home, I’m just a- passing through. My treasures are laid up, somewhere beyond the blue.”
