A Cry for Help August 2, 2019

“I’m single, have no childhood memory of my mother telling me she loved me. I have no romantic partner, no fulfilling career or passion…” Those words were received by an advice columnist. This cry for help can be heard many times from people who have lost their way. It illustrates a passage found in the Psalms, “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me.” Such broken people need Jesus. He loves all unconditionally; loves so much that He gave His life for all. Upon acceptance, Jesus’ love gives meaning to life, peace, forgiveness. He invites, “Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Distorted or True Images August 1, 2019

When does a child first become self-conscious? According to Doctor Taghi Modoressi, a professor at the University of Maryland, a child under 10 months does not notice any difference between an accurate or distorted reflection, but from ages 2-5, has developed a definite self-image. In light of this, it is interesting to note that the Bible, which is likened to a mirror, shows a picture of how God sees us. It tells us that “there is none righteous, no not one”, and compares us to “sheep who have gone astray.” Unfortunately, some of us, like children under 2 years, see a distorted image, viewing ourselves as good and able to make it on our own. Thankfully, God lovingly invites us to accept reality and ask Him for forgiveness, cleansing and to become a member of His family. You can accept that invitation, by sincerely praying, “God be merciful to me, a sinner…” and save me.

The Day Willie Cried July 31, 2019

Willie was a big overgrown Boy Scout, who grew up without much of a chance. He was considered one of the bad boys of the community, constantly blamed for trouble, whether guilty or not. Following an altercation, in which he was being blamed for something he had not done, he listened, expecting to be found guilty and punished, as usual. But when the Scout Master said, “ Now Let’s hear Willie’s side”, Willie started to cry, surprising everyone. They had never seen him cry before. When asked what the matter was, he said, “Nobody ever said I had a side.” Though “All have sinned …”, the Lord Jesus has taken our side. We read that “God so loved the world…” He sees “our side” and offers forgiveness, and one day, a home in heaven

“The Light of the World” July 30, 2019

A famous painting, “The Light of the World” hangs in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London England. It depicts Christ standing outside a closed door, patiently awaiting admission. One critic said, “You have painted a wonderful picture, but there has been an omission. There is no handle on the door.” Holman Hunt, the artist replied, “That is not a mistake, the handle is on the inside.” Mr. Hunt was a brilliant artist, but he was also a careful student of the Bible. He knew that Jesus had said, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in…” Remember please that we must individually accept Jesus’ invitation and open the door to our lives. He is standing outside of the door to your life? Only you can invite Him in

An Apple sized Baby July 29, 2019

She was Nicknamed Saybie by the hospital staff, in San Diego where she was born in November 2018. She weighed just a little more than half a pound, the world’s tiniest baby to survive premature birth on record. She was not expected to live. But in May of 2019 she went home, a healthy five-pound miracle. Unborn babies reveal much. A heartbeat can be detected as early as 18 days after conception. At 12 weeks fingernails, and eyebrows form. At 20 weeks the baby has all major organs, can hear and respond to a mother’s voice, and feel pain. No wonder the Psalmist exclaimed, “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Each of us is unique, made in the image of God, with potential to know, love and have fellowship with Him. Let’s value every person’s life.

Death of the Ultimate Warrior July 26, 2019

“Every man’s heart one day beats it final beat…” Those words were spoken by James Hellwig, the famous professional wrestler known as the Ultimate Warrior. Just 24 hours later he died of cardiovascular disease at the age of 54, while walking with his wife. Whether knowingly or not, Hellwig was expressing a sober biblical truth. The Bible reminds us, “It is appointed for men to die but after this the judgment.” Where we spend eternity depends on our relationship to Jesus Christ, God’s Son. The Bible plainly states, “He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” Please invite Jesus Christ into your life to be your Saviour.

What we look like on the Inside July 24, 2019

The Family Circus cartoon pictured a little guy drawing his older brother’s picture, who upon seeing it was not impressed. He said, “Hey, you said you were going to draw me. I don’t look like that!” The young artist replied, “Well maybe you don’t know what you look like.” We chuckle, but there is a lesson here. It is easy to have a distorted self-image, not only of our outward appearance but also of our “inner self.” The Bible, God’s Word, describes us as “sheep who have gone astray” and also informs us frankly that “there is none righteous, no not one.” Only when we honestly see ourselves as God sees us and admit that “we do look like that”, are we ready to ask for forgiveness and cleansing. Jesus said, “He that comes to me, I will not cast out.

Connected but Adrift July 22, 2019

“More Canadians than ever live alone and almost one quarter of them describe themselves as lonely. It is a great irony of our age that we have never been better informed but more adrift.” Elizabeth Renzetti said that in her Globe and Mail article ‘A Life of Solitude’. The Bible also speaks of the perils of loneliness. Some find themselves of necessity living alone. When this happens, we need to remember that God has promised those who are part of His family “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” He even inspired John in his gospel to tell us how we can become a part of God’s wonderful family. He wrote, “As many as received Him (Jesus) to them He gave the right to become the children of God, even to those who believe in His name.”

God has no Grandchildren July 19, 2019

Many people have an impressive religious heritage. Their family tree includes missionaries, pastors, deacons, or elders. But the Heavenly Father does not have any grandchildren. To be a member of His family, we must personally become a child of God. John, in his gospel, wrote, “As many as received Him (Christ) to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood… the will of the flesh, … the will of man, but of God.” Becoming a Christian is not joining a religion or turning over a new leaf. It is becoming personally and properly related by faith to the Saviour, who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” What will you do with Jesus? The decision is ours.

Tiffany‘s bad Experience July 17, 2019

Tiffany Adams recently had a bad experience. She fell asleep on a short Air Canada flight from Quebec City to Toronto. Waking up, she found herself alone on a cold, dark plane. Unable to charge her cell phone to call for help, she eventually found a flashlight, used it to help her unlatch the door near the flight attendant’s seat and signaled the ground crew. Life is certainly full of surprises, sometimes frightening and bizarre, such as joblessness, serious health issues, or the loss of loved ones. How reassuring to know that when we are in a proper relationship with the God of the Bible, by placing our trust in Jesus, even in such dire circumstances, the Saviour invites, “Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He who has all power can handle any problem we have.
