Divine Diagnosis February 6, 2017

Newspaper columnist Dr. W. Gifford Jones, M.D. reminds us that blood studies can now predict ailments before they strike, such as a pre-diabetic state. Then helpful steps can be taken. Like our physical condition, it is also possible to know our spiritual condition. For example, a verse in the New Testament states “there is none righteous, no not one!” That clearly reveals that every single one of us is a sinner by nature and by choice. Yes, that’s a hard pill to swallow, but when we accept it’s truth and admit the fact that on our own we cannot please God, then we can move on to make the greatest decision of our lives-as explained by John in his gospel.” As many as received Him (Jesus) to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name. “ That’s the prescription of Jesus.

A Complicated World February 3, 2017

Baylor University in Texas recently released a survey stating that female undergraduates spend an average of ten hours a day interacting with their phones, while males interact for eight hours a day. Focusing on what’s important is difficult at the best of times. Now we have all sorts of new distractions like email, smart phones, texting, tweeting, Facebook and more. It is vital that we get our priorities correct and to heed the advice of the Apostle Paul. He wrote, that we should be “redeeming the time, and to “seek those things which are above.” Jesus Himself admonished us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” Technology can be useful for entertainment, communication and business. But let’s not allow it to control us so much that we neglect preparing for the next life.

Golden Age of Answers February 2, 2017

Today’s technology gives easy access to billions of times as much information as was held in all the libraries on earth 2000 years ago. We live in the golden age of answers, the information age. A while back, a Time magazine entitled “The Second Age of Reason” wisely stated, “Of course information is not knowledge or wisdom.” The key is how to ask the right questions- question with consequences, such as “How can I know God?” and “how do I receive eternal life.?” The Bible answers in John’s words, “And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” And later John added, “…He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life…these things I have written to you… that you may know that you have eternal life.”

Carbon Dioxide Gas February 1, 2017

Carbon Dioxide has been called the “silent killer.” It is invisible, odourless and tasteless. It is a reminder that what we don’t know can hurt us. Sadly, many put their heads in the proverbial sand and ignore warnings of imminent danger, thinking, “it won’t happen to me.” This is most serious when pertaining to the next life. Refusing to act upon our responsibility to make our peace with God, does not change the truth. One New Testament writer asked,” how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation.” Jesus, the people of His day rejected His offer of forgiveness and eternal life cried out, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem. How I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing.” That offer is still open to all people today.

Salvation Army January 30, 2017

The Salvation Army has described itself as a Christian movement that would reach out to the unloved and disadvantaged in society. An example of the selfless people who make up its numbers took place on May 29th, 1914 when the Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence River near Rimouski Quebec. Over one thousand passengers and crew were lost. Among those who perished were one hundred and twenty-nine Salvation Army Officers. Survivors told how these servants of God, when informed there were not enough life preservers to go around, removed theirs and gave them to others whom they felt were not prepared to meet the Lord. These good people exemplified their Saviour of whom we read, “…God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Nobel Peace Prize January 27, 2017

A Nobel Peace Prize for 2016 has been awarded to Juan Manuel Santos, president of Columbia South America for his efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end. Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist, inventor, engineer, entrepreneur and pacifist. Born in Stockholm in 1833, Nobel left two hundred and sixty-five million dollars to fund prizes for achievements in various fields, including the Nobel Peace Prize. God’s expression of peace to the world was the giving of His Son, Jesus. The Bible speak of “peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” coming when we enter into a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ. Then after we have peace with God, we receive “the peace of God…” But we only have the peace of God when we have made peace with God.

Fake News January 25, 2017

Fake news websites (also referred to online as hoax news) deliberately publish hoaxes, propaganda and disinformation. There is nothing new about false news. Throughout history, people have made up falsehoods for various reasons, often very harmful and dangerous. But this is most serious when it concerns eternal things. An example of fake news concerning this vital subject is the propagation of the falsehood that there is no such thing as original sin. Proponents of this erroneous idea tell us that we all have a spark of divinity that merely needs to be fanned. Look around you. There is massive worldwide evidence that we are a fallen race. And denying this truth is denying the clear Bible teaching that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and “there is none righteous, no not one.” Please do not accept this fake news.

Uncertain Riches January 23, 2017

“You think, ‘This can’t be happening. What is secure anymore?” that was the tearful response of a widow who had lost a third of her income when the stock market she had invested in failed. Her story was reported in the Wall Street Journal. Our best plans and hopes can be shattered by events over which we have no control. There is only one source of true security in our changing world. Paul reminded the people of his day, something that is applicable to our day. He wrote not to “trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” King David, when facing a dangerous and difficult time in his life, “encouraged himself in the Lord His God.” He drew strength not from his circumstances but from His unchanging God. And we can too, when we have Christ in our lives.

Master of the Universe January 20, 2017

Carl Icahn is an American business magnate, believed to be worth more than seventeen billion dollars. Time Magazine called him the “Master of the Universe.” Well, Mr. Icahn is smart and rich, but he is not the “master of the universe.” That position is already occupied. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” And the Psalmist wrote, “the earth is the Lord and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” God not only created the universe, He is involved in all that happens in it, ordering the events of our lives. He gave us a choice to obey or disobey His Word. Only He can fit us for heaven, but the choice of our eternal destiny is ours. God is master of the universe, but is He the master of your life? Of mine? Joshua wisely encourages us “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

Honesty! January 18, 2017

A homeless man in Kansas City Missouri is also a man of integrity. Sarah Darling mistakenly dropped her diamond engagement ring into Billy Ray Harris’ donation cup, along with some spare change. Harris returned the ring, and Sarah’s husband, in gratitude, established a fund for him, which reached more than $170,000. In addition, the story resulted in Harris and his sister connecting, after they had lost touch 20 years ago. She has offered Harris a place with her. Whether honesty brings such good results or not, it is still the best policy. That’s especially true concerning being honest with God. When we acknowledge that we are spiritually bankrupt because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and trust His promise ”believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved”, good things happen.
