June 28 Not Sleeping Well?

Are you sleeping poorly due to job stress? CTV news shared a new study recently that suggested that may be due to a lack of support from co-workers and higher-ups. The study highlighted the important role the workplace environment and stress have beyond the setting of work. What happens at work can correlate to how well you sleep at night. Did you know the Bible has something to say about rest but it is not in reference to sleep. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

June 26 Life Flashing Before Your Eyes

A recent study offers evidence that an area of the brain associated with consciousness can experience a wave of activity for some people right before they die. The team behind the study said the rhythmic brain activity they detected could support the “light flashing before your eyes” theory. Something that we do know about life, that many have recognized, has to do with its length. The Bible reveals that life is like a vapor, it appears for a little time and then vanishes away. The Bible also stresses the urgency of entering into a right relationship with God made possible through Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 6:2 reads, “behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

June 23 You Must Be Prepared to Die

CNN put out an article last month noting how Sebastian Steudtner holds the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed. It is 86 feet, the equivalent to surfing an eight-story building. His mentality to tacking these big waves in his words is, “you must be prepared to die.” Did you know the Bible warns us we all should be prepared to die being that we do not know what day will be our last. In the book of James we are told that life is like, “a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” The Bible also informs us a means in which God made it possible for us to be prepared. John 3:16 reads, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

June 21 Pursuit of Wonder

An article was published by CNN last month by Monica Parker entitled, “Happiness is a trap. Here’s what to pursue instead”, the writer outlines the limits of simply pursuing happiness and enforces the importance of pursuing wonder which she identifies to be of a much greater value. Did you know the Bible places a lot of emphasis on wonder in relation to God? In the book of Psalms the writer is addressing the knowledge of God and writes, “O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off.” The Psalmist in summarizing he thoughts on the knowledge of God writes, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.”

June 19 AI to Spot Potential Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

A study was published recently noting how artificial intelligence algorithms may be the key to identifying pancreatic cancer up to three years before it develops. Researchers noted this could be a game-changer in battling this type of cancer which is fast-growing and hard to detect. Did you know the Bible holds the key to identifying something we have all been infected with that needs to be addressed. That which we have all been infected with is sin. In the book of Romans it reads, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Thankfully the Bible also makes us aware of a way we can have the eventual effects of sin dealt with in our lives. The way is made possible through Jesus Christ.

June 16 Snake in the Cockpit

Recently a pilot of a private plane from South Africa noticed a deadly cobra slithering down his back and then under his seat while he was in flight. Thankfully he was able to do an emergency landing and had the obvious problem addressed. Did you know the Bible makes us aware of a problem that has to be addressed. It reads, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The bible also tells us of the eventual effects of sin, “For the wages of sin is death”, meaning eventually separation from God. Thankfully the rest of that verse reads but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The means to address sin is to recognize your need for forgiveness and trust in Jesus Christ for your salvation resulting in Him working in your life.

June 14 Cry for help

Fox news reported recently regarding a woman finding herself trapped between two large boulders on a 50-foot cliff in Arizona. The 20 year old was free climbing by herself when she slid between two boulders and twisted her leg and could not free herself. She cried for help and thankfully another hiker heard her and called the fire department to rescue the woman whom was trapped. In the Bible, in the book of Psalms there is a cry out for help and this cry is given to God which reads, “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

June 12 Loneliness

Last month the US surgeon general said that loneliness in the U.S. poses health risks as deadly as smoking a dozen cigarettes daily. Research shows that Americans who have become less engaged with worship houses, community organizations and with their own family members have reported an increase in feelings of loneliness. In the Bible in the book of Hebrews, the writer directs those whom are followers of Jesus Christ to get together regularly. It reads, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

June 9 Pleasure Principle

“What decides the purpose of life is simply the programme of the pleasure principle,” said Sigmund Freud. After 100 years of promoting the importance of the pleasure principle, indeed over-promoting it, today there are so many people who have bought into it. In this frightening complex world, many people try to calm their fears with earthly pleasure and self-indulgence. King Solomon tried it over two thousand years ago, writing “whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,” only to conclude, “There was no profit under the sun.” But the Psalmist was inspired to urge us to turn to God for true pleasure, writing, “You will show me the path of life; In your presence is fullness of joy.

June 7 Expensive Bowl

CNN reported last month how a delicate porcelain bowl, measuring 4.5 inches in diameter, sold for over 25 million dollars at a Chinese art sale in Hong Kong. The bowl was originally produced in the early 1700’s. It definitely increased in value over the years. Something that is of infinite worth that has not changed in price over the years has to do with being able to experience salvation. The reason the price has not changed is that it is a gift, you cannot buy it. You can only experience it through faith in Jesus Christ. In the Bible it reads, “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
