It reads, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesu

Vancouver’s Bloedel Conservatory contains a flower called the corpse flower. This beautiful plant has been described as smelling like “rotten flesh, with notes of old fish and decayed cabbage” when it blooms. It is hard to believe something so beautiful could produce something so putrid. In Jesus day He makes a comparison of something that appears to be beautiful but has a disgusting element to it. What Jesus describes is self-righteousness. In describing the self-righteous religious rulers of His day, He describes them as, “whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” Not a picture you would want to emulate!

Do you have an iphone? Have you ever accidently set off the sos feature presenting a false alarm to 911. If you ever do, cancel the call during the countdown. If it goes through don’t hang up but explain to the operator what happened because if you hang up some sort of assistance will be sent to your location. Did you know there is a warning presented in the Bible that is not false but the real deal. In the book of Romans it reads, “for the wages of sin is death”. Death meaning future separation from God. That is the warning but thankfully that same verse presents a sure way of escape, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Have you ever experienced a napuccino? The napuccino consists of drinking a caffeinated drink just before having a nap. The caffeine does not kick in for 15 minutes so the key is to get to sleep quickly. Apparently, according to sleep expert Dr. Cheri Mah, combining sleep and caffeine together makes a person feel more alert after. Did you know the Bible has something to say about rest but it is not in reference to sleep. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

A study published in The Lancet shared that 44.4 percent of all cancer deaths and 42 percent of healthy years lost could be attributed to preventable risk factors. The three leading risks according to this global study includes smoking, drinking too much alcohol or having a high body mass index. Did you know the Bible shares about the greatest risk factor for death, meaning separation from God, and it falls under one category? It is sin. Romans 6:23 reads, “For the wages of sin is death,”. Thankfully the rest of that same verse shares about the way this can be avoided, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The Harvard Gazette addressed a study regarding the risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality among women who consume sugar sweetened beverages on a daily basis. Apparently, this is the first study to report an association between sugar sweetened intake and chronic liver disease mortality. A person has to be careful of that which seems sweet but can eventually be deadly. Did you know in the Bible it describes sin as something that can seem good and beneficial for a short time but eventually brings destruction. In the book of Hebrews it speaks of the reality that sin can bring pleasure for a season but as noted in the book of Romans, its side effects are deadly.

Fox News published an article entitled, Unsuspecting shoppers in multiple states fall victim to “distraction thefts”. It is a theft that typically involves two or three people going into an establishment and identifying a target. One person will engage and distract the unsuspecting victim through conversation while another individual takes the purse or wallet or phone that is sitting in the shopping cart. Did you know in the Bible Jesus warns us about a robber who is very good at what he does? In John 10:10 Jesus says, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

A study published in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine that suggests an effective sleep strategy to improve sleep duration. Apparently three minute bouts of resistance exercise every 30 minutes over a four hour period in the evening will increase your sleep duration. It might be something to try because sleep is very important. Did you know the Bible has something to say, not about sleep but rest. Have you heard of XRAI glass. It is technology that connects glasses with your phone and allows a person who is deaf or hard of hearing to see in-person conversations. Imagine the information a person who could not hear or struggled hearing could gain from such technology. Did you know the Bible speaks of information that a person should gain and benefit from? Proverbs 2:6 reads, “For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Like looking specialized glasses, unless you look at what God has said in the Bible you miss out on the wisdom that is readily available.

In Canada Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October. In the United States it is the fourth Thursday in November. Regardless of whether you live in Canada or in the US it is focused around food and being thankful. Did you know that in the Bible, that for those who have trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, the season of Thanksgiving gets extended beyond October or November. In the book of Thessalonians it reads, “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” That which an individual is to be thankful for are the good experiences in life also knowing that in the bad experiences in life God desires to do a work through what has happened.
