A humble Inventor February 17, 2021

The telegraph was invented in the 1830s and 1840s by a number of inventors, most notably by Samuel Morse. His Morse code revolutionized communication. Surprisingly, the first words sent by Morse were “What God hath wrought.” When acclaimed, he said, “I knew I never deserved it. I made this contribution to mankind not because I was brilliant, but because God needed someone to convey this gift to the world.” Samuel Morse, in refusing to take credit for something he received from God, illustrates God’s great plan of salvation. Many think that through religion, or good works, we become Christians, Titus made clear that it is “…not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…”

Middle C February 15, 2021

Lloyd Douglas, author of “The Robe,” once asked a professor acquaintance, “What’s the good news this morning?” The professor tapped a tuning fork and replied, “That’s middle C- it was Middle C yesterday and it will still be Middle C a thousand years from now.” In this fast paced ever changing world, everyone needs a Middle C, a someone who will always be there, no matter what else changes. David the Psalmist introduced, with certainty, such a One, writing, “From everlasting to everlasting, you are God. Jesus said, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.” The writer of the book of Hebrews described Jesus as “…the same yesterday and today and forever.” We cannot stop change in our world. It is inevitable. But we can put our hand in the hand of the One who is the everlasting God.

Be Careful Who you listen to February 12, 2021

Researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario Canada have found that some people heed the health advice of famous people, even when it is contradicted by medical professionals. Steven Hoffman, a health policy professor at McMaster said, “This can be dangerous when celebrities promote something that is not backed up by science…” When seeking counsel, there is nothing more critical than that pertaining to our spiritual health. Paul the Apostle speaking of this, wrote of certain wise people who “received the Word … examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so.” When studying a subject in our Bibles, it’s important to read what precedes and what follows, to understand the true meaning. Jesus promised “If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know if the teaching is of God.”

Scars Erased February 10, 2021

Thirty-three-year-old Tanya St. Arnauld sustained terrible scars from an acid attack. In spite of skin grafts, burn treatments and rehabilitation, the damage remained severe. Then Dr. Jill Waibel of Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute in Florida learned of St. Arnauld’s plight and offered her a free course of laser treatments. Now she says, “I look like I never had an accident.” But there is even more wonderful news that all our sin scars, guilt and misery can be erased. The Psalmist David was inspired to suggest a prayer we can all pray. It is “Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” God will remove the spiritual scars caused by our wrong-doing. John wrote, “If we confess our sins, He (Jesus) is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The Silence of Big Ben February 8, 2021

Since 1859 London’s Big Ben has been Britain’s most famous timekeeper. But the giant bell atop Parliament’s clock tower fell silent last month. It will be silent for four years for repair work. Hundreds gathered under the Victorian clock and nearby Parliament Square to mark the moment. However, while this famous timepiece will be quiet for a while, time marches on. We will still need to do things on time, still be reminded that time is passing whenever we observe a birthday. The Psalmist reminds us that our lives are controlled by God. Speaking for us all he wrote “My times are in Your hands.” And surely it is a wise use of our time to make our peace with God while we have opportunity, by recognizing our fallen nature and spiritual need and accepting His wonderful gift of forgiveness and eternal life.

Historic Eclipse February 5, 2021

“Historic eclipse turns day into night…” was the headline describing the first full-blown solar eclipse in nearly a century. Julie Vigeland of Portland Oregon said, “I’ve seen other really magnificent things, but there is nothing like this.” But a greater eclipse, and a more significant historic event took place when our Saviour, Jesus Christ went to Calvary and died for our sins. By His sacrifice, He made it possible for the night of our spiritual darkness to be turned into the day of our spiritual Light. The book of Proverbs reminds us that “The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.” Jesus responded to our need. He said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Jesus can turn night into day for all who sincerely ask.

All that she had February 3, 2021

Several years ago, an Island hair dresser, in church with her young children, faced an interesting decision. The offering was being taken up. Should she give her last five dollars or not? She decided to give. That week she received a letter in the mail containing $100 cash. She has never found out who her anonymous giver was. When she related that story, I suggested that it was a reminder that God loves her, and He loves her family. Her experience reminds us of a story Jesus told in Mark’s gospel. It was about a woman, who, though she did not have much, gave it all. He commended her with the words, “…she put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” Her giving reflected her love for God. The greatest thing that you and I can give to God is our selves, as we admit that “all have sinned” and invite Christ into our lives.

Victor Hugo’s Utopia February 1, 2021

Victor Hugo is famous for Les Misérables and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He once prophesied, “In the 20th Century war will be dead; the scaffold will be dead…” Then came the Boer war, the first and second world wars, the Korean and Vietnamese wars. As sincere and well-meaning as Hugo was, he had an unreal view of mankind. Wars are still with us, hatred is alive and well because man is still a fallen sinful creature. But there is hope. Paul was inspired to write, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Later he explained, “If you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” This is a dark old world, but Jesus is the light of the world.

Tearing Down The Wall January 29, 2021

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Those were the words of US President Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1987. He spoke of the Berlin Wall, built by East Germany in 1961, to keep residents from escaping into Democratic West Berlin. On November 9, 1989, East Germany announced that all citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin This paved the way for German reunification, on October 1990. The Wall was demolished in 1992. This incident is a reminder of a much greater wall between our righteous God and unrighteous mankind, which came down when Christ died on the cross. Paul the Apostle wrote, “For He Himself is our peace…and has broken down the middle wall of separation… that He might reconcile … through the cross…for through Him we … have access to the Father.” .

God’s Global Prescription January 27, 2021

“We received it…it came… the medicine has arrived.” Those were the words of an excited woman, upon learning that medicine to alleviate eye bacteria and pain had finally arrived. Her story is about Global Outreach Mission’s medical ministry in the Republic of Congo, at Pioneer Christian Hospital. While we may complain about the cost of the medicine we need, it is usually readily available. Medicine is crucial for physical needs. And “spiritual medicine” is crucial if spiritual needs are to be met, not only in Africa, but everywhere. God’s global prescription is “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” And it is available to all.
