Our Trustworthy Bible June 22, 2020

Imagine forty different physicians from different countries speaking different languages, compiling a textbook for the treatment of disease over a period of sixteen hundred years. Who would want a doctor who was guided by that kind of a book? Yet interestingly, the Bible was written over a period of sixteen hundred years by many people who lived at different times and who spoke different languages. Nobody has ever been able to prove one single error in the Bible. It’s been tried. There is but one sensible reason for the truthfulness and reliability of this book. God was the author and He inspired humans to write what He wanted written. “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” We can trust the Bible. In it, we are urged to “seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.”

The Power of God June 19, 2020

Did the miracles described in the Bible really happen? Did the Red Sea actually part as Moses ordered? Did Christ raise the dead? Dr. John R. Brobeck, professor of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School believes that many scientists now admit that such miracles may have happened. He says that one factor could account for the miracles of scriptures. It is a source of energy unknown to the scientific system. Dr. Brobeck said, “In the Bible, it is known as “the power of God.” And God’s Word does have much to say about God’s power, such as “God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.” It is no wonder Paul the Apostle was inspired to write, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation, to everyone who believes.”

Avoiding the Unpleasant June 17, 2020

In the comic strip “Peanuts”, Lucy tells Linus that when he grows up and moves away, she will get his room. But Linus reminded Lucy that someday she too would have to leave home. Lucy quickly turned the television up louder, crawled into her chair with a bowl of ice cream and refused to talk about it. Just a comic strip, but with an important insight for us all. Many of us, like Lucy, are often unwilling to accept the unpleasant realities in our own lives, to admit our own faults and failures, and especially to face the reality of the next life. To do that, we need to acknowledge our spiritual poverty, since, “all have sinned,” and ask Jesus for forgiveness and an entrance into heaven. He invites us to “seek the Lord while He may be found and to “call upon Him while He is near.” Let’s learn from Lucy.

911 June 15, 2020

The 911 emergency system has amazing capabilities. In most places, a person need only dial those three numbers to be instantly connected to a dispatcher. The dispatcher sees on a computer screen the caller’s telephone number, address, and the name under which the number is listed. A caller does not even have to say anything. Even rasping coughs and hysterical cries have brought a quick response. The dispatcher knows where the call is coming from and help is sent. At times, situations in our lives are so desperate and our pain so deep we can only muster 911 prayers to God. Like the Psalmist, we too can pray, “In my distress, I cried unto the Lord…” And we too will be able to say, “… and He heard me.” God hears each one. He knows our name and every detail of the situation. He will send precisely what is needed.

The Missing School Desks June 12, 2020

Arkansas high school teacher Martha Cothren would disagree with the football players who are refusing to stand during the playing of their country’s national anthem. When her students arrived at school, there were no desks. When none of the students could tell her how they had earned the right to sit at a desk, they had to sit on the floor. When the final period came, Ms. Cothren opened her door and several war veterans walked in, each carrying a chair. She then told her students they had not earned the right to sit at desks. It was the veterans who had paid the price so the students could get an education. Similarly, nobody has ever earned the right to be called a Christian. Jesus made that possible by His dying on the cross. Paul explained, “by grace we are saved through faith, and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God.”

The Biggest Gamble of All June 10, 2020

Someone rocked a boat to see if it would tip. It did. Someone smelled escaping gas and lit a piece of oily waste to find the leak. He found it. Someone lived all his life laughing at the gospel and rejecting Christ to see if there really is a hereafter. There was. In each of these cases, those involved were taking a chance, gambling. They lost. We may never buy lotto tickets, never visit casinos, never gamble. But if we are leaving Christ out of our lives, staking everything on the idea that the hereafter and the need of what Jesus called the new birth are merely fables, we are taking the biggest gamble of time and eternity. We will lose. We are betting against Christ Himself, who asked the rhetorical question, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul.” We all know the answer to that don’t we.

Tracking our private information June 8, 2020

Law Professor Michael Geist, Chair of Canada Research in Internet and E-Commerce, says that how we use our mobile devices, what we watch on TV, where we live, as well as our gender and age are being tracked. The big question is who will see this private information and what will be done with it. Such actions can cause concern and discomfort. However, our Maker already sees and knows all about us. The Psalmist wrote, “O Lord…You understand my thought afar off …and are acquainted with all my ways. “It is natural to be concerned when our private lives are invaded. But if we have entered into a personal relationship with God we “have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” and we can relax, knowing He has our best interest at heart and uses information about us only for our good and His glory.

The Blind Skier June 5, 2020

Taking a deep breath, Wally Mozdzierz skis down the icy slope, feeling the exhilaration common to anyone who skis. But for Wally, it’s different. He is totally blind! Though he’s taken some tumbles, he continues to tackle some of the steepest and most challenging terrain. “I have no fear,” he says. The secret? Wally has a guide with him always issuing instruction. And sometimes we too feel like we are blind, can’t see the future and unseen dangers. But it is different when we have the Lord for our guide. He invites us to accept His offer of forgiveness, cleansing and the promise of everlasting life. He becomes our guide through this life and even into the next. He has promised, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

Lessons from a Frog June 3, 2020

Immerse a frog in hot water, and it will immediately hop out. Put it in cold water and then slowly heat it, and the frog will not notice that it’s being boiled. Bad habits too, may start in our lives, coming on gradually, so they do not get our attention. Watch just a little pornography, spend just a little time flirting with someone, not our husband or wife. Begin binge drinking, only on weekends. Before we know it, we are addicted. Thankfully, when we turn our situation over to God, and become properly related to Christ. His truth can set us free. Paul reminds us ,“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” What an offer.

I’ll never do that again June 1, 2020

As the young girl and her friend came bounding out of the icy water, she was heard to scream, “I will never do that again!” She was one of dozens who got up early on New Year’s Day and jumped into a large hole chopped in the solid ice in her city’s harbour. The young lady had made up her mind that it was something she would never repeat. And many of us have done something which we regret, such as making unwise choices in life. But the greatest mistake any of us can make is to leave God out of our lives. That’s because only Jesus can satisfy our spiritual needs with forgiveness of our wrong-doing. He alone is “the way the truth and the life.” No one can come to the Father except through Him. As noted author Eugenia Price advised, “don’t go through life practicing your mistakes.”
