Everyone’s Rendezvous February 19, 2020

The oldest person ever, whose age has been independently verified, is Jeanne Calment (1875–1997) of France, who lived to the age of 122 years. The oldest verified man ever is Jiroemon Kimura (1897–2013) of Japan, who lived to the age of 116 years. However long we live, we have been given this time to “prepare to meet … God.” The news of these two long lived people gives much to ponder. Each one of us has a rendezvous with the grim reaper, like it or not. The wise will “seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near,” knowing that our Saviour is “willing to save to the uttermost, all who come to God by Him.” Ira Stanphill reminds us all, “Though millions have come, there is still room for one, there is room at the cross for you.”

Expensive Prescription Drugs February 17, 2020

Prescription drugs, used by many Canadians every day, are becoming increasingly expensive. In fact we hear of some people who have to choose between needed groceries and filling their prescriptions. The subject of free universal coverage is often raised. So far there is no solution. Though medicine for our physical needs is often prohibitive in cost, it is reassuring to know that the remedy for our spiritual needs is free. Peter explains that Jesus is the reason why it is free. We read, “Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree…that we might live.” The amazing gift of God’s forgiveness for those who humbly acknowledge their wrongdoing, is available to all. John wrote in his gospel, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

God’s Valentine’s Day February 14, 2020

This Friday, many will observe Valentine’s Day, celebrated every year on February 14. It provides an opportunity to show affection by sending cards or flowers. Some believe the first Valentine’s Day took place in 496. A.D. It’s a day of loving. But the greatest of all love stories took place when Christ gave His life for mankind on a cross. Paul wrote in the New Testament, “God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Why did He do that? Because we are all sinners, and unable to earn our way to heaven. We are also told that a right relationship with God does not come “… by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy.” Calvary was God’s Valentine’s message for us.

Response to God’s Love February 12, 2020

As we near Valentine’s Day, we hear much about love and hearts. Jennifer Schultz, in an issue of Our Daily Bread, wrote, “When God looks at us, He is more interested in our hearts than our height, the state of our souls rather than the structure of our face…He zeroes in on things that matter– our response to His love for us.” Perhaps Valentine’s Day is a good time for all of us of us to examine our hearts. The Bible reminds us of God’s great love to all of us with these words: “The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. An old hymn asks us “Is your heart right with God? “This Valentine’s Day, God invites us to receive His love.

Beauty in the eyes of the Beholder February 10, 2020

The expression “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is exemplified in the following story. There wasn’t much beauty to behold in an old farmhouse built in 1835, abandoned near Selkirk Ontario. But Earl Clemens, a talented and creative Ontario Pastor saw more than broken windows and a rusty metal roof. After acquiring it, he and his wife Marlene dismantled it and rebuilt it into their beautiful home near Delhi Ontario. Their action pictures that of the Heavenly Father. When He saw a fallen race with no beauty or value, He sent His Son, Jesus to purchase, dismantle and re-create. Paul described the results, when he wrote, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away, behold all things have become new. “

The end of the Canadian Penny February 7, 2020

Today, is the 7th anniversary for the end of the Canadian penny. Minted first in 1858, the penny ceased to be distributed on February 4th, 2013. Its lack of present value caused its demise. It became useless and was pushed aside. The Bible, God’s inspired Word tells us that God is concerned about small, seemingly invaluable things. Sometimes you and I may feel of little worth, just like the penny. That’s when it is good to know that someone cares. John, in his gospel was inspired to write, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Even though we have all done wrong and are like the proverbial “bad penny,” we are still of great value to the kind Heavenly Father. We are loved.

Fanciful Predictions February 5, 2020

20 years ago, there were some fanciful predictions about the new 21st century. There would be flying cars, jet packs, waterproof living rooms, and a pool on every rooftop. Obviously, many of these utopian predictions about life in the 21st century did not come true. While many did see their dreams and inventions come to pass, it’s important to note that not everything new is necessarily good, nor is everything old necessarily bad. For example, the Bible is old, but it is still true and relevant. The famous 119th Psalm informs us, “Forever O Lord, your Word is settled in heaven. “ The Bible, God’s inspired Word, has been, and always will be unchanging and completely dependable. Its message is still life-transforming. King David prayed, “Lead me into your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation.” That’s an excellent prayer for us all.

Harmless Habits February 3, 2020

Two young New Brunswick boys decided to make a little fire in the woods on the way to school. It was a windy day and the woods were very dry. Suddenly the underbrush was on fire. They became alarmed when a large tree burst into flames, but fortunately, it was easily extinguished by the fire department. How like so many of us! Sometimes it begins with indulging in what we see as a “harmless habit.” We progress to ignoring what we know about right and wrong. Suddenly our lives are out of control. Wrongdoing always brings unpleasant consequences. Thankfully, the good Lord invites us to “seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.” We don’t have to be enslaved by harmful habits. Jesus said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. If today, please call upon the Lord. He will help you.

Fall of the Berlin Wall January 31, 2020

In November of last year, Germany celebrated the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was erected in August 1961 by the Communist government of East Germany to keep East Germans from fleeing to the West. Its destruction took place in November, 1989. This event provides us with a striking picture of the wall between us and God. Since, Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, there has been a wall of sin separating us from our Creator. As long as that wall stands, there is no fellowship with the Heavenly Father. Paul the Apostle explained that before we become properly related to Jesus, our Saviour, we are “without Christ…having no hope and without God in the world.” But thankfully, God tells us that “He Himself …has broken down the middle wall of separation.” For true believers, the wall separating us from Him is gone

An apple a Day January 29, 2020

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Right? WRONG! New research reveals that daily apple eaters have as many doctor visits as others who ate fewer or no apples at all. Good physical health is important. The same is true for our spiritual health. In the Bible, God’s inspired Word, we are told, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” In that wonderful book, we learn the secrets of being spiritually healthy in God’s eyes. He tells us about a universal problem, writing, “There is none righteous, no not one.” But thankfully, God also informs us what to do about that problem, inspiring Paul to write, “ If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
