Vision Restored May 10, 2019

A Maritime Senior noticed that he had poor vision in one of his eyes. It surprised him because his lenses were up to date, he had no cataracts or other eye problems, yet for some unknown reason, he could not see clearly out of his left eye. Then he discovered a heavy film on that lens. A thorough cleaning solved the problem. And in like manner, before we give our lives to Christ, we are unable to understand much of the Bible, or its truths. Paul explained why. “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him… for they are spiritually discerned.” But when Jesus comes into our lives, He takes the scales from our eyes, and we can see and understand the Bible and its teachings.

Perfectionism May 8, 2019

Dr. Simon Sherry, a clinical psychologist in Halifax, says that perfectionism is a serious epidemic in our modern western societies. Perfectionists tend to strive for flawlessness and experience pressure to be perfect. Social media and parental expectations can be contributing factors. We need to be skeptical toward idealized media images and we should encourage parents not to love their children based on how well they are performing. No one is perfect! The Bible tells us “There is none righteous, no not one.” But how great it is to know that as Paul was inspired to write, “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” His love is unconditional and available to all who call upon Him.

Keep Looking Up May 6, 2019

A young boy found a five-dollar bill on the street. After that, when walking, he never lifted his eyes. He constantly looked down, hoping to find more money. He accumulated 29.519 buttons, 54.172 pins, and a miserly disposition. He missed the blossoms, the blue skies and the rainbows. Many of us act like that throughout our lives. In an incessant drive to make money or get to the top of our professions there is a danger of not looking up, the most important direction of all. The wise will heed the admonition to “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim.” The Heavenly Father invites, “Look to me all the ends of the earth and be saved…for I am God and there is no other.”

Hallelujah what a Saviour! May 3, 2019

Mark Twain, speaking of the Jewish people, once wrote that their “… contributions to the world’s list of great names are way out of proportion to the weakness of their numbers.” Some of those great names include Albert Einstein, Irving Berlin and Golda Maier. But the greatest of all to come out of Israel is the One of whom it is written, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sin.” Thankfully, Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost.” That includes not just His own Jewish people, but all people, because we are told in the Bible, “whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” An old hymn expresses the sentiment that is in the heart of everyone who calls upon Jesus for forgiveness and salvation: “Hallelujah what a Saviour!”

Change of Seasons May 2, 2019

The harsh winter is over, and we can now anticipate summer. It is a time to remember that the good Lord gives us yearly seasons, for a reason. Changing seasons emphasize the passing of time. We do not know how long we will be on this earth, but the Bible reveals that we are here, among other reasons, to prepare for the next life. We are warned “prepare to meet your God” and that “now is the day of salvation.” When we humbly and sincerely acknowledge our spiritual bankruptcy, when “there is none righteous, no not one;” when we ask Christ for forgiveness and accept His gift of eternal life, we can say with confidence, “my times are in His hands.” Corrie Ten Boom gave good advice, saying “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

Two Faced May 1, 2019

An Ontario family was shocked recently when their cat produced a kitten with two faces, able to meow and purr at the same time. It reminds us that many of us act with two faces. We have one face for people we are trying to impress, quite another for family or close friends. But no matter how we pose, God is not impressed, for He sees our hearts. The Bible says, “The Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Although the little kitten with two faces had no choice, we do. And the best advice for “two-faced” people is, “Make up your mind.” This is especially true concerning things eternal. Joshua, an Old Testament character, advised wisely, “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

Owls April 30, 2019

Owls are fascinating creatures. Their fixed stares and chilling hoots tend to intimidate. The owl’s head is so flexible that it can rotate 180 degrees. Its body can be facing in one direction and its head in another. John Bunyan, in Pilgrim’s Progress, mentions a man he named “Mr. Facing Both Ways.” He was reminding readers that while we may sit on the fence for a while, life’s situations eventually compel us to make up our minds, to choose the eternal destiny of our souls. Jesus reminds us that “No man can serve two masters. “And Joshua, in the Old Testament urges us, “Choose you this day whom you will serve.” An old hymn asks ”What will you do with Jesus? Neutral you cannot be. Someday your heart will be asking, what will He do with me?”

Pay Attention to Warnings April 29, 2019

Sometimes while driving, we encounter radar triggered signs. When the device flashes our speed, hopefully we come to attention and make the necessary adjustments. And similarly, many times in life we are brought up short by warning signals, such has health failure, the unexpected passing of a loved one, or the loss of employment. There are also warnings in God’s Word, the Bible. For example, “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near” or “Now is the day of salvation…” When these warning signs gain our attention, it is time indeed to accept God’s invitation to “…return to the Lord…for He will abundantly pardon.” Has the good Lord been seeking to get your attention lately?

Won’t Somebody Forgive Me April 26, 2019

A small boy found himself in a room surrounded by disapproving adults. He had done something wrong and the sober expression on his relatives’ faces was meant to impress him with his misdemeanor. He saw no smiles. Finally, as the tears flowed down his little face, he wailed, “Won’t somebody forgive me? By our own choices, we sometimes find ourselves in a similar situation. We know where we went wrong in God’s eyes, and in the eyes of others. And we wonder “Can I ever be forgiven?” Paul the Apostle reminds us in the New Testament, “In Him (Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Jesus once said, “He (or she) who comes to me, I will in no wise cast out.”

Sir Winston Churchill April 24, 2019

On June 4th, 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain gave a speech that was a major factor in ending World War II. Here are excerpts. “We shall fight … on the seas and oceans; … in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets…We shall never surrender …” Churchill’s speech was a decision, by him, his government and his people. But the results that came do not compare with the results of the decisions millions have already made and which each one of us can make. It is first admitting the truth that “There is none who does good, no, not one.” Then, accepting the good news that “Christ died for our sins” and receiving the gift of eternal life.
