The Harvard Gazette addressed a study regarding the risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality among women who consume sugar sweetened beverages on a daily basis. Apparently, this is the first study to report an association between sugar sweetened intake and chronic liver disease mortality. A person has to be careful of that which seems sweet but can eventually be deadly. Did you know in the Bible it describes sin as something that can seem good and beneficial for a short time but eventually brings destruction. In the book of Hebrews it speaks of the reality that sin can bring pleasure for a season but as noted in the book of Romans, its side effects are deadly.

Last month the largest diamond mined since 1903 was unearthed at a mine in Botswana. This diamond is 2,492 carats and weighs almost half a kilogram. What a treasure to find. Did you know that in the Bible Jesus shares a story about finding a treasure. He tells of a man who found a treasure in a field and then went and sold all that he had to buy the field so he could have the treasure. He explains that the treasure is the kingdom of heaven and we can actually possess it. Jesus also shared the way to the king and kingdom. He said in John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me.

Fox News published an article entitled, Unsuspecting shoppers in multiple states fall victim to “distraction thefts”. It is a theft that typically involves two or three people going into an establishment and identifying a target. One person will engage and distract the unsuspecting victim through conversation while another individual takes the purse or wallet or phone that is sitting in the shopping cart. Did you know in the Bible Jesus warns us about a robber who is very good at what he does? In John 10:10 Jesus says, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

A study was recently published in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine that suggests an effective sleep strategy to improve sleep duration. Apparently three minute bouts of resistance exercise every 30 minutes over a four hour period in the evening will increase your sleep duration. It might be something to try because sleep is very important. Did you know the Bible has something to say, not about sleep but rest. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

In Canada Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October. In the United States it is the fourth Thursday in November. Regardless of whether you live in Canada or in the US it is focused around food and being thankful. Did you know that in the Bible, that for those who have trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, the season of Thanksgiving gets extended beyond October or November. In the book of Thessalonians it reads, “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” That which an individual is to be thankful for are the good experiences in life also knowing that in the bad experiences in life God desires to do a work through what has happened.

Have you heard of an invention called XRAI glass. It is new technology that connects glasses with your phone and allows a person who is deaf or hard of hearing to see in-person conversations. Imagine the information a person who could not hear or struggled hearing could gain from such technology. Did you know the Bible speaks of information that a person should gain and benefit from? Proverbs 2:6 reads, “For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Like looking at the writing in the glasses, unless you look at what God has said in the Bible you miss out on the wisdom that is readily available.

Do you want to help your odds of living longer? CTV news shared a study that can help you know how to do so. The study published by the American Heart Association suggests that adults that regularly engage in moderate or vigorous exercise for 150 to 600 minutes a week have a significantly reduced rick of mortality. This study does not provide any guarantees but it does tell you how you can increase your odds of living longer. Did you know the Bible shares of a guarantee in which a person can experience eternal life? In the Bible in the book of 1st John it speaks of such a guarantee, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”

I wonder how many people will purchase certain perks and not even take advantage of what has been made available to them. Something else I would be interested to know has to do with a statement made by Jesus Christ in John 10:10 which reads: “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” I wonder many people have entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and have not taken full advantage of all that Jesus has made available by properly investing into growing in that relationship?

Have you ever noticed how an argument can develop unbelievably fast? An argument is not something we typically want to see achieved quickly but we would rather it not take off at all. In the Bible there is some very practical wisdom that can be applied that can help you to keep an argument from not taking off at all. In Proverbs 15:1 it reads, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Recently a study was released in the journal JAMA pediatrics that made a connection between the frequency of tablet use and frequency and level and of anger outbursts among toddlers. The authors of the study wrote that early childhood tablet use “may contribute to a cycle” of problems in emotional regulation . Did you know the Bible provides direction on anger that was not shared recently but rather almost 2000 years ago? It reads, “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” Do you have anger in your life that is not being addressed. The instruction is to look to get it addressed quickly. The means to do so is through God Himself.
