June 24 – Compassion for a Turtle

tfh sunriseRecently I read about a tender hearted little boy seen crying near the corner of a busy highway. A kindly passerby stopped to inquire. The boy pointed to a turtle in the middle of the road. Waiting for a break in the traffic, the man rescued the turtle and returned it to the little boy, thinking it was his pet. But the little guy shook his head. “Please put him down by the river. He lives there.” He had shed tears of compassion because a small creature was in danger. In that he illustrates our Savior. Once when Jesus, looked on a large crowd of sick people who needed help, Matthew wrote, “…when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” That’s How Jesus sees us when our hearts are broken and when we are overwhelmed. If we reach out-He embraces us with His love and compassion.
