Making something beautiful March 9, 2020

A story has been told of a slender brown reed that grew in the forest. It was always sad because it could not make music like the brook, the birds or the wind. Then one day something happened. A young boy cut the reed and fashioned it to his liking. When he breathed through it, beautiful music floated over the forest. So often, like the reed, we are unable, on our own, to make beautiful music. But when we invite Jesus into our lives, He sets us free from the bondage of bad habits and gives us a new song. He sees our true worth. He forgives our sins and gives us a new life. Songwriter and musician Bill Gaither describes the transformation as follows. “Something beautiful, something good, all my confusion He understood. All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife, but He made something beautiful of my life… “ And that can happen to every single on of us.

Seeking a Better Life March 6, 2020

Thu Thuy Luong and her husband Tuan Anh Tran recently left their home country of Viet Nam and settled in Charlottetown PEI in search of a better life. We wish them success as they establish their new restaurant on Queen street in Charlottetown. It is human nature to seek a “better” home, car, education or job, all legitimate ambitions. But along with these physical goals, we have spiritual needs. And there is no better way to find God’s answers to our needs than in His written Word, the Bible. There we learn that “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” But in this great book we also learn that Jesus, God’s Son died on a cross to take the punishment for our sins. We learn that we must come to Jesus, confessing our sins and believing on Him, in order to have a right relationship with God. Please read the Bible every day. There we find “the words of life.”

Not Myself Today March 4, 2020

The Canadian Mental Health Association has had a program since 2013 called, “Not Myself Today.” Businesses can get buttons reading such words as “Grumpy”, “Blah”, “Refreshed” “Defeated” and so on for employees to wear. This promotes conversation and if you’re not having a great day, it allows others to try to help. It is certainly true that along with the good days, most of us have a few “blah” days thrown in. As well as others trying to help, it’s always good to remember that God is available and offers us an open door when we are feeling down. He tells us in the Bible, “Call on me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things…you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.“ If you are feeling depressed or discouraged today, reach out to Jesus. He’s always reaching out to you.

Consequences for actions and words March 2, 2020

“The internet is not truly anonymous…if someone wants to find you, they may well eventually be able to do so…there are consequences for your actions and words.” That’s according to Russell Wangersky, a Canadian journalist. These are sobering thoughts aren’t they. Please also consider some provocative words from the Bible. Jeremiah, an Old Testament prophet, was inspired by God to reveal what God has asked. “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?” King David, in Psalm 139 gives us the answer to that rhetorical question writing, “O Lord You have searched me and known me…You discern my thoughts…. You are acquainted with all my ways.” Knowing this, the wise will acknowledge any wrongdoing and make peace with our all-knowing God. What better time to do this than right now!

Garbage Mary February 28, 2020

A while back, the Chicago news media carried the story of a woman who became known as “Garbage Mary.” One day she was found rummaging through trash cans and questioned by police. Because she was in a confused state of mind, they took her to a psychiatric hospital to be examined. Later it was learned that she was in fact a millionaire. Mary, though she had great riches, was living on garbage. How sad! But many of us make a worse mistake. Though God is rich in mercy and grace, many of us continue to search the world’s garbage cans for satisfaction, joy and peace. the Psalmist urges us all to “give thanks to the Lord, for His unfailing love, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” And he invites us to” taste and see that the Lord is good.” The invitation is open to you whoever you are and wherever you are today

Looking beyond our Scars February 26, 2020

Following a vicious dog attack, three-year-old Victoria Wilcher was left with facial scars and an eye patch. At a restaurant in Jackson Mississippi, she was asked to leave because her scars disturbed other patrons. Happily, when the restaurant owners learned of the hurtful incident, they donated $30,000 toward Victoria’s medical bills. The owners looked beyond Victoria’s scars. The Bible informs us, “The Lord does not see as a man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” We often see only the physical, and judge one another on outward appearances. Thankfully, our loving heavenly Father looks beyond unattractiveness or beauty and into our hearts. No matter what we look like, God loves us all the same. He sees us not for what we are, but what we can become. It’s belief, not beauty that counts with God.

The hope Dying February 24, 2020

Isaac Asimov, an American writer and university professor, told the story of a rough ocean crossing. A kind steward said to a very seasick passenger, “Remember, no man ever died of seasickness.” The passenger’s response was, “Man don’t say that! It’s only the hope of dying that keeps me alive.” He recovered and did not really want to die, but his words “the hope of dying” are interesting. I have met many godly people who, with Christ in their lives, really had the hope of dying. They were ready and wanting to meet their Maker and loved ones who had gone before. Only those who have assurance of where they’re going in the next life, truly feel that way. John the Disciple wrote, “These things I have written to you who believe on the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” That assurance comes by receiving Christ as Saviour.

Innocent man set Free February 21, 2020

Ray Hinton, 58 from Alabama, who served 30 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, is free. As he was leaving Birmingham Jail, he said, “Thank-you Jesus.” Think of it- a wrongful conviction cost this man 30 years of his life. He got the freedom he deserved and should have had long ago. In stark contrast to Ray Hinton’s story, all of us are guilty of wrongdoing before God, not one of us can claim that he or she is innocent, because we are all sinners by nature and by choice. The Bible plainly states that in the eyes of God, “there is none righteous, no not one.” But because Jesus died as our substitute on the cross, He has made undeserved freedom for the guilty possible. Peter, himself forgiven, wrote of Jesus, “He died the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.” God’s Word says, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”

Everyone’s Rendezvous February 19, 2020

The oldest person ever, whose age has been independently verified, is Jeanne Calment (1875–1997) of France, who lived to the age of 122 years. The oldest verified man ever is Jiroemon Kimura (1897–2013) of Japan, who lived to the age of 116 years. However long we live, we have been given this time to “prepare to meet … God.” The news of these two long lived people gives much to ponder. Each one of us has a rendezvous with the grim reaper, like it or not. The wise will “seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near,” knowing that our Saviour is “willing to save to the uttermost, all who come to God by Him.” Ira Stanphill reminds us all, “Though millions have come, there is still room for one, there is room at the cross for you.”

Expensive Prescription Drugs February 17, 2020

Prescription drugs, used by many Canadians every day, are becoming increasingly expensive. In fact we hear of some people who have to choose between needed groceries and filling their prescriptions. The subject of free universal coverage is often raised. So far there is no solution. Though medicine for our physical needs is often prohibitive in cost, it is reassuring to know that the remedy for our spiritual needs is free. Peter explains that Jesus is the reason why it is free. We read, “Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree…that we might live.” The amazing gift of God’s forgiveness for those who humbly acknowledge their wrongdoing, is available to all. John wrote in his gospel, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
