Poor Rich Men and Women March 30, 2020

Jeff Bezos , believed to be one of the richest man in the world, recently purchased a large estate for 165 Million dollars. Cecil Rhodes, who lived from 1853 to 1902 was probably one of the world’s richest men of his day. A friend, General William Booth, Founder of the Salvation Army, once asked him- “Rhodes, are you a happy man?” “Me happy? Good heavens no.” Rhodes had discovered that rich men can be very poor. Jesus once rhetorically asked- “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his own soul? Are we ready to meet our Maker? We can be, because while “all have sinned” and “there is none righteous, no not one”, it is also true that “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ through Jesus Christ our Lord” for those who sincerely ask.

Scientific Facts March 27, 2020

Science is much revered in our day. Sometimes though, what passes as scientific fact is not fact at all. For example, the mythical Piltdown man, once embraced by scientists as the missing link between men and monkeys, is now known to be a hoax. Then there was the embarrassing Chicken-Dinosaur discovery in China in 1999, trumpeted as proof that birds evolved from dinosaurs. Later it too was proven to be a hoax, made up by a Chinese farmer. Even scientists, it seems, can be fooled. It is reported that Albert Einstein once said, “Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe.” John Milton said, “The end of all learning is to know God.” And Jesus our Lord, said, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free. He also said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The COVID-19 Virus and Fear, By Pastor Les Dennis

Scripture Reading: Psalm 56

When Afraid, Trust in God

When David wrote the words of Psalm 56, he had dangerous enemies. He was running from King Saul who wanted to kill him. David spent some time in Gath to get away from Saul, and while he was there he wrote, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3) Because of COVID-19, these are times of danger for us. Even though our enemy may be a virus, we too can practice the same principle. When we are afraid of the COVID-19 virus or anything else, it is time to trust in God. Our safety is in His hands.

Overcoming the Spirit of Fear

While fear of wild animals motivates us to get away or protect ourselves in the wilderness, we should not give in to a spirit of fear and live fearful lives everyday. In 1 Timothy 1:7, we are told that the spirit of fear is not from God. The same verse tells us that God has given us the spirit of power, love, and sound judgment. The COVID-19 crisis should make us cautious so that we follow the health authority’s recommendations but should not leave us in a state of constant fear. How should we deal with our fears regarding the current situation? We should take our fears to the Lord and leave them with Him. This is easier to do when we understand God’s love for us.

God’s Love Conquers Our Fears

1 John 4:17 makes it clear that understanding God’s love gives the believer confidence when he/she stands before Him. When our love is perfected, which means completed, fear is driven away. When we understand just how much God loves us, and when we understand that God is in control of all that happens to us, God’s love for us fills so us that there is no room for fear.

God Is in Control

If God loves me so much, why do I suffer sometimes? Everyone suffers sometimes. Believers and unbelievers have disasters in their lives. The difference is that believers have the Lord to go through hard times with us. We are accompanied by His love for us. We are promised that whatever happens to us, He will bring good out of it (Romans 8:28). Even if our suffering brings death, we win.

Will God Allow Me to Get the COVID-19 virus?

We do not know if God will allow us to get the COVID-19 virus, but we need not fear it. Most of us want to continue living and we will continue to live until the Lord’s appointed time to take us home. In Psalm 56:4 it is clear that we do not need to fear what man can do to us but let’s ask the question anyway—What can man do to us? The worst man can do is to take our life. If that happens, we immediately go to heaven where there will be no suffering.

Let’s apply this principle to the COVID-19 disease, which is our enemy right now. This means that we need not be afraid of getting it. As long as we do what we can to protect ourselves, God will not let us get it unless it is His will to allow us to get it. He is not the cause of it, but if it is His will to allow us to get it, He will work it out for our good, whether that good is it be on earth or in heaven with Him.

The Electrocardiogram March 25, 2020

An electrocardiogram (or ECG) measures the electrical activity of the heart, detecting any abnormalities or danger signals. God also performs electrocardiograms of our hearts. Not on the physical heart, but on our inner man. The Bible tells us, “I, the Lord, search the heart…to give every man according to his ways….” Elsewhere in the Bible we learn that the heart of natural man is too spiritually diseased to be fixed. There can be no spiritual by-pass or stent. But God has promised, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” Jesus explained, “Except a man be born again, He cannot see the kingdom of God.” This new heart comes when we invite Christ into our lives to perform a spiritual heart transplant. That is what it means to be born again.

Doing Your Best March 23, 2020

His little face flushed and perspiring, the young boy tugged at the stone which wouldn’t budge. His father asked, “Are you doing your best?” “Of course,” the little guy answered. “It’s a big stone.” “But are you doing your best? I am big enough to move the stone for you and you haven’t asked for my help.” Like this boy, we struggle, trying to become a Christian by our best efforts,( turning over a new leaf, shedding our bad habits and doing good works.) But we do not get to heaven that way. We must remember that Jesus, when dying on the cross in our place, to forgive our sins, cried out “It is finished.” And we must also remember that God’s Word informs us all, that it is “ By grace we are saved through faith and that not of ourselves, not of works lest anyone should boast.” So, are you doing your best? Are you calling on the Lord for His outside help?

Bertrand Russell speaks Truth March 20, 2020

“Bertrand Russell, one of the most famous of the modern atheists, is reported to have said, “Nothing can penetrate the loneliness of the human heart…except the highest intensity of the sort of love religious teachers have preached.” I don’t know if Russell understood what he was saying, but he was speaking the truth. Only God’s love can fill and satisfy the longings of a lonely human heart. Millions have experienced what Psalm 107 verse 8 tells us God promises. “For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul, He fills with good things. The Bible also promises this great truth—”You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Hopefully, Bertrand Bussell understood and accepted the great truth he was expressing, before he passed from this life.

New Meaning to Words March 18, 2020

The words mouse and grass, in addition to their former meanings, now mean something quite different. Oxford has introduced 500 new words to its Online dictionary. Included is the word “meh”, meaning indifference or boredom. In contrast, the Bible means what it says, and says what it means, and does not change what it means. Clear Bible truths inform us, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved,” or “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” It doesn’t get much clearer. God’s Word, the Bible never changes. Of it we read “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Our words change, but God’s do not. We can trust Him and His Word.

Not Working March 16, 2020

In March 2014 the Jura clock was delivered to Quebec City by Switzerland, to celebrate that city’s 400th birthday. The clock was sleek, and beautiful, but it had a huge problem—it did not keep proper time. This famous clock reminds one of religion—with its expensive edifices, and colourful costumes, is like the Jura clock, it did not work. Religion looks good on the exterior but is merely the effort of people trying to look good in God’s eyes. Bible based Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship between Jesus Christ and humble people who accept God’s assessment of their spiritual condition as fallen sinners. This relationship happens when we respond to God’s invitation to “ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

Going Home March 13, 2020

From her hospice bed in a Western Canadian town, Sylvia said to her friend “I’m going home Jim.” Surprised, Jim asked “You mean you’re going back to your condo?” “No she replied,, I’m going home to heaven.” When Sylvia had acknowledged her need of Christ and had invited Him to be her Saviour, she received assurance from a New Testament passage. It read, “… God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son… These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” If you have sincerely received Christ as your Saviour, when you realize that you may be passing away soon, you too will have this wonderful hope of heaven, and you will be able to say, “I’m going home.”

Looking In the Mirror March 11, 2020

Have you looked in the mirror lately? It can give you a jolt. We usually experience a reality check, so some try to improve the image by accenting, hiding, darkening or lightening. Yet we hardly ever quite look the way we wish. It is better to accept what we cannot change, remembering that according to the Good Book, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart.” And that Good Book, the Bible, gives us a spiritual reality check. It informs us that “all have sinned,” and that we cannot make ourselves into Christians. But thankfully, it also assures us that while we are all sinners by nature and by choice, Jesus Christ died for us on a cross. If we accept God’s assessment of what we are really like, He offers forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. Now what do you think of that?
