“Bertrand Russell, one of the most famous of the modern atheists, is reported to have said, “Nothing can penetrate the loneliness of the human heart…except the highest intensity of the sort of love religious teachers have preached.” I don’t know if Russell understood what he was saying, but he was speaking the truth. Only God’s love can fill and satisfy the longings of a lonely human heart. Millions have experienced what Psalm 107 verse 8 tells us God promises. “For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul, He fills with good things. The Bible also promises this great truth—”You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Hopefully, Bertrand Bussell understood and accepted the great truth he was expressing, before he passed from this life.

The words mouse and grass, in addition to their former meanings, now mean something quite different. Oxford has introduced 500 new words to its Online dictionary. Included is the word “meh”, meaning indifference or boredom. In contrast, the Bible means what it says, and says what it means, and does not change what it means. Clear Bible truths inform us, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved,” or “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” It doesn’t get much clearer. God’s Word, the Bible never changes. Of it we read “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Our words change, but God’s do not. We can trust Him and His Word.

In March 2014 the Jura clock was delivered to Quebec City by Switzerland, to celebrate that city’s 400th birthday. The clock was sleek, and beautiful, but it had a huge problem—it did not keep proper time. This famous clock reminds one of religion—with its expensive edifices, and colourful costumes, is like the Jura clock, it did not work. Religion looks good on the exterior but is merely the effort of people trying to look good in God’s eyes. Bible based Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship between Jesus Christ and humble people who accept God’s assessment of their spiritual condition as fallen sinners. This relationship happens when we respond to God’s invitation to “ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

From her hospice bed in a Western Canadian town, Sylvia said to her friend “I’m going home Jim.” Surprised, Jim asked “You mean you’re going back to your condo?” “No she replied,, I’m going home to heaven.” When Sylvia had acknowledged her need of Christ and had invited Him to be her Saviour, she received assurance from a New Testament passage. It read, “… God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son… These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” If you have sincerely received Christ as your Saviour, when you realize that you may be passing away soon, you too will have this wonderful hope of heaven, and you will be able to say, “I’m going home.”

Have you looked in the mirror lately? It can give you a jolt. We usually experience a reality check, so some try to improve the image by accenting, hiding, darkening or lightening. Yet we hardly ever quite look the way we wish. It is better to accept what we cannot change, remembering that according to the Good Book, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart.” And that Good Book, the Bible, gives us a spiritual reality check. It informs us that “all have sinned,” and that we cannot make ourselves into Christians. But thankfully, it also assures us that while we are all sinners by nature and by choice, Jesus Christ died for us on a cross. If we accept God’s assessment of what we are really like, He offers forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. Now what do you think of that?

A story has been told of a slender brown reed that grew in the forest. It was always sad because it could not make music like the brook, the birds or the wind. Then one day something happened. A young boy cut the reed and fashioned it to his liking. When he breathed through it, beautiful music floated over the forest. So often, like the reed, we are unable, on our own, to make beautiful music. But when we invite Jesus into our lives, He sets us free from the bondage of bad habits and gives us a new song. He sees our true worth. He forgives our sins and gives us a new life. Songwriter and musician Bill Gaither describes the transformation as follows. “Something beautiful, something good, all my confusion He understood. All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife, but He made something beautiful of my life… “ And that can happen to every single on of us.

Thu Thuy Luong and her husband Tuan Anh Tran recently left their home country of Viet Nam and settled in Charlottetown PEI in search of a better life. We wish them success as they establish their new restaurant on Queen street in Charlottetown. It is human nature to seek a “better” home, car, education or job, all legitimate ambitions. But along with these physical goals, we have spiritual needs. And there is no better way to find God’s answers to our needs than in His written Word, the Bible. There we learn that “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” But in this great book we also learn that Jesus, God’s Son died on a cross to take the punishment for our sins. We learn that we must come to Jesus, confessing our sins and believing on Him, in order to have a right relationship with God. Please read the Bible every day. There we find “the words of life.”

The Canadian Mental Health Association has had a program since 2013 called, “Not Myself Today.” Businesses can get buttons reading such words as “Grumpy”, “Blah”, “Refreshed” “Defeated” and so on for employees to wear. This promotes conversation and if you’re not having a great day, it allows others to try to help. It is certainly true that along with the good days, most of us have a few “blah” days thrown in. As well as others trying to help, it’s always good to remember that God is available and offers us an open door when we are feeling down. He tells us in the Bible, “Call on me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things…you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.“ If you are feeling depressed or discouraged today, reach out to Jesus. He’s always reaching out to you.

“The internet is not truly anonymous…if someone wants to find you, they may well eventually be able to do so…there are consequences for your actions and words.” That’s according to Russell Wangersky, a Canadian journalist. These are sobering thoughts aren’t they. Please also consider some provocative words from the Bible. Jeremiah, an Old Testament prophet, was inspired by God to reveal what God has asked. “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?” King David, in Psalm 139 gives us the answer to that rhetorical question writing, “O Lord You have searched me and known me…You discern my thoughts…. You are acquainted with all my ways.” Knowing this, the wise will acknowledge any wrongdoing and make peace with our all-knowing God. What better time to do this than right now!

A while back, the Chicago news media carried the story of a woman who became known as “Garbage Mary.” One day she was found rummaging through trash cans and questioned by police. Because she was in a confused state of mind, they took her to a psychiatric hospital to be examined. Later it was learned that she was in fact a millionaire. Mary, though she had great riches, was living on garbage. How sad! But many of us make a worse mistake. Though God is rich in mercy and grace, many of us continue to search the world’s garbage cans for satisfaction, joy and peace. the Psalmist urges us all to “give thanks to the Lord, for His unfailing love, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” And he invites us to” taste and see that the Lord is good.” The invitation is open to you whoever you are and wherever you are today
