Measuring our own Goodness November 18, 2019

A small boy announced to his mother that he was as tall as the Bible giant Goliath. Investigating this alleged growth spurt, she found that her little son had made his own measuring stick, and it was far shorter than he claimed. We laugh, but really, we are often guilty of measuring our goodness by our own standards! Compared to some others, we consider ourselves quite righteous. But God’s measuring stick is perfection and by His standards, “There is none righteous, no not one.” Mercifully though, God has provided help for us in the person of Jesus, His perfect Son. When He died on the old rugged cross, He paid the penalty for all our sins. The Bible actually says, “Christ died for our sins.” Now it is up to us to ask forgiveness and accept God’s gift to us.

Wrong driver at the Wheel November 15, 2019

In Abington Scotland, astonished onlookers watched as an automobile, with a border collie at the wheel. rolled down a hill, across a major highway and finally hit a security barrier. Farmer Hamilton had left the collie in the vehicle, while inspecting his flock of lambs. Sometimes we feel ourselves spinning out of control and like the dog in this story, we don’t know how to stop. The Bible reminds us, “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” When our lives become aimless, it is time to vacate the driver’s seat and invite God to take control. We can all take a lesson from the Psalmist David, who wrote famously, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” He closed with the comforting words, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Wrong site Surgery November 13, 2019

Frequently these days wrong-site surgery is performed in hospitals on the wrong side or site of the body. But hospitals are not the only places where wrong- site situations occur. Some try to treat spiritual needs without locating the “seat of the problem.” Education and improving social conditions are very important. But God inspired Matthew in his gospel to inform us that “Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. To deal with spiritual sickness, some try baptism, church membership or good works. Thankfully, God’s Word reveals how to avoid this wrong-site spiritual surgery, telling us that it is “… not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to God’s mercy He saves us. “

Unable to Pay November 11, 2019

“Home equity debt is one of the fastest growing debts in our world today.” That’s a warning made by Financial Consumer’s Agency. They add, “Don’t borrow more money than you can afford.” Debt can easily get out of control, and we find ourselves unable to pay. Inability to pay is more serious when it applies to eternal matters. According to the Bible, “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness,…” And since “All have sinned,” we all have a sin debt, owed to God. But the good news is that Jesus came to earth and paid our debt when He went to the cross in our place. We are told, “Christ died for our sins” and “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” But it gets even better. All we need to do to have our sin debt paid is to ask for it. We are told, “Call unto me and I will answer you…”

Helpful Hints For Life November 8, 2019

We all want to live long and age well. Here are some helpful hints. One: Exercise daily. Two: Have challenging work. Three: Connect to friends. Four: Get a good education. Five: Have a sense of purpose. Here is one more, the most important of all. Make sure you are rightly related to God, our Maker. In John’s gospel, we are told, “As many as received Him (referring to Jesus) to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe on His name.” Assurance that we are part of God’s family by faith in Christ, gives the greatest satisfaction, purpose and joy. Blaise Pascal, a brilliant French mathematician, physicist, inventor, and writer, once declared, “ “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus …”

Heavenly Treasure November 6, 2019

Gottlob Schmidt lived on his family farm outside Hanna, Alberta. When offered more than a million dollars for the farm, he chose to donate it to the province for a Provincial park. “The money, I can’t take with me.” He said. Quite true! Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…but store up treasures in heaven. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” If we choose to live with eternity’s values in view and store up heavenly riches, the first step is to acknowledge the fact that we are all spiritually fallen people, part of a fallen race. God’s Word says, “All have sinned,” and “There is none righteous.” The next step is to accept Jesus as our Saviour, since Paul was inspired to write, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” Then, as we live in obedience to the God of the Bible, we will store up heavenly treasure.

Know Thyself November 4, 2019

Apparently even the “millennials” (those born between 1980 and 2000 don’t think much of their own generation. According to a poll by Pew Research Centre, they scored themselves as follows—49 percent greedy; 59 percent self-absorbed. On the plus side, they described themselves as environmentally conscious and idealistic. Socrates said, “Know thyself.” So, it is a start to be aware of our strengths and weaknesses. But it’s even more important to know how we rate in God’s eyes. His Word reveals, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God,” and “There is none righteous, no not one.” Although God’s assessment of us is totally accurate, He wants us to know that He loves us with an everlasting love” and gave His one and only Son, the Lord Jesus, so that “whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. What an offer!

True Friendship November 1, 2019

“Friendship is really a matter of time. Time to listen, help and care.” These thoughtful excerpts are from a poem by Amanda Bradley. Earthly friendships are wonderful but the best friend we could ever have is the Lord Jesus, God’s Son. The Bible, which is God’s inspired Word, tells us “He loved us and gave Himself for us.” Paying our sin debt by His death on Calvary’s cross, Jesus offers eternal life to all who believe on Him. We are told, “The gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Joseph Scriven wrote a much-loved hymn which includes the following words. “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear… Can we find a Friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? …take it to the Lord in prayer.” Jesus wants to be our friend.

The World Series October 31, 2019

It is October 2019, and world Series time again. It was July 2009 when Pitcher Mark Buehrle was playing for the Chicago White Sox. In the 9th inning, in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Buehrle was closing in on a no-hitter, when Gabe Kapler hit what looked like a sure home run. But then, White Sox outfielder Dewayne Wise made a spectacular leaping catch at the wall to rob Kapler of a home run. Buerhle then closed out the 18th perfect game in major league history- a magic performance. But there was a much greater moment in history. The destiny of fallen mankind was at stake. Out of eternity came Jesus, the Great One, Who went to the cross to die for the sins of the world. He cried out “It is finished,” referring to everything necessary to deliver us. Anyone sincerely repenting and receiving Christ can be forgiven and receive eternal life. It is free

Celestial Love Story October 30, 2019

The caption in a newspaper article read, “Celestial Love Story.” It referred to the story of Prince Perseus’ rescue and romance with Princess Andromeda, a Greek mythology. But the greatest celestial love story of all was best told by John, in his gospel. ”For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”( John 3:16) Frederick M. Lehman wrote the beautiful gospel song, “The love of God is greater far, than tongue or pen can ever tell. It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win. His erring child He reconciled and pardoned from his sin.” No matter what we have done, we can all experience that love.
