Tearing Down The Wall November 30, 2016

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Those were the words of US President Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1987. He spoke of the Berlin Wall, built by East Germany in 1961, to keep residents from escaping into Democratic West Berlin. On November 9, 1989, East Germany announced that all citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin This paved the way for German reunification, on October 1990. The Wall was demolished in 1992. This incident is a reminder of a much greater wall between our righteous God and unrighteous mankind, which came down when Christ died on the cross. Paul the Apostle wrote, “For He Himself is our peace…and has broken down the middle wall of separation… that He might reconcile … through the cross…for through Him we … have access to the Father.” .

God’s Global Prescription November 29, 2016

“We received it…it came… the medicine has arrived.” Those were the words of an excited woman, upon learning that medicine to alleviate eye bacteria and pain had finally arrived. Her story is about Global Outreach Mission’s medical ministry in the Republic of Congo, at Pioneer Christian Hospital. While we may complain about the cost of the medicine we need, it is usually readily available. Medicine is crucial for physical needs. And “spiritual medicine” is crucial if spiritual needs are to be met, not only in Africa, but everywhere. God’s global prescription is “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” And it is available to all.

Drones and Birds November 28, 2016

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles. They are used for all sorts of purposes. Incidentally, a bird is actually a living airplane. John H. Storer, writing of birds in The Scientific American says “…they are constantly adjusting automatically to air pressure and the changing requirement…” Now if a bird’s wing does something “automatically”, it had to be designed. Everything that adjusts automatically had to be designed. Drones were skillfully and laboriously designed by intelligent scientists and engineers. Nothing just happens. So who made the amazing versatile bird? Something called Chance? No. “God created … every winged bird according to its kind.” He created you and me too. And Christ, His Son “died for our sins” on the Cross.

God’s Storm Cellar November 25, 2016

In Oklahoma, severe weather is common from early spring through the end of summer. To prepare for tornadoes, many residents have a storm cellar for refuge until the bad weather passes by. These tornadoes are like the storms that arise in our lives from time to time. These storms may be illnesses, loss of loved one, marital problems or serious financial setbacks. When they come, we too need a “storm cellar” till the storms pass by. For such times it is good to know the comforting truth that Nahum, the prophet revealed, writing, “The Lord is good. A stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him.” When we become God’s children by placing our faith in His Son, Jesus, we can claim that promise, and “with Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm.”

Guns that Look Like Cell Phones November 23, 2016

It looks like a regular cell phone. It’s the same size, same shape, same overall appearance. But beneath the digital face lies a .22 caliber pistol, a gun capable of firing bullets with a touch of the otherwise standard keypad. It introduce the possibility for surprise and deception, with potentially disastrous results. In like manner every day, many church-goers pretend to be something they are not, professing to be Christians, while living dishonestly or immorally. And non-church- going folks know who these hypocrites are. That’s why many of them don’t go to church. But Paul the Apostle warned, “Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” I am glad, though, that there are real Christians. Your Bible will show you how you can become one too!

Love of Pleasure November 21, 2016

“What decides the purpose of life is simply the programme of the pleasure principle,” said Sigmund Freud. After 100 years of promoting the importance of the pleasure principle, indeed over-promoting it, today we have become devotees at its shrine. In this frightening complex world, many people try to calm their fears with earthly pleasure and self-indulgence. Solomon tried it hundreds of years ago, writing “whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,” only to conclude, “There was no profit under the sun.” But the Psalmist was inspired to urge us to turn to God for true pleasure, writing, “You will show me the path of life; In your presence is fullness of joy; At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” And Jesus is the only way to God.

Paradoxes November 18, 2016

The English language is full of paradoxes. For instance, there is no ham in hamburgers, neither is there apple or pine in pineapple. We park in driveways and drive on a parkway. Sweetmeats are candies, while sweetbreads are meat. A wise guy is different than a wise man, and so on. Our language is a bit crazy. And when trying to express ourselves, we often don’t say what we mean or mean what we say. God doesn’t. His Word is clear, definite, flawless and eternal. He says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”So let’s not try to tell God what’s right and wrong. Or consider this- “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” So let’s not be spiritual dummies. Please-study your Bible. You’ll find it refreshingly straightforward.

Overlooked! November 16, 2016

An extremely rare copy of Shakespeare’s “First Folio” has been discovered in a library of a nineteenth century Scottish mansion. The book published in 1623 has been verified as authentic. Emma Smith, professor of Shakespeare Studies, Oxford University said “It was there in plain sight but nobody quite knew what it was.” We too often overlook obvious blessings. One is our God inspired Bible. The Psalmist reminds us, ”I rejoice at Your Word, as one who finds great treasure.” And our Lord said that His Word “…is truth.” Perhaps in your home there is a Bible handed down to you that is gathering dust. Is it time for you to “discover” it again? In that great book you can learn how to be be forgiven and become a member of God’s family. Please study your Bible. It can change your life.

Increase of Knowledge November 14, 2016

In 1781, the planet Uranus was discovered, followed by Neptune in 1846, and Pluto in 1930. But since the Kepler Space Telescope was launched in 2009, exploration of the universe has expanded rapidly. At present 2,300 planets that orbit a star outside the solar system, called exoplanets, have been found. In the past one hundred years, knowledge has increased more than in all previous time combined. And that is exactly as the Bible prophesied. Daniel wrote in his time, thousands of years ago, “…many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” How did he know? He was inspired by God, just as the rest of the Bible is. You and I can trust that wonderful, authentic book, God’s Word, and we can trust the Saviour it presents to us. When we acknowledge our sin and invite Him into our lives, we become His followers. He shows us how to live this life, and how to be prepared for the next.

To Live and to Die November 11, 2016

“People are like stained glass windows; they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is only revealed if there is light from within.” Those thoughtful words are from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, in her book, “To Live and to Die.” This light within can only come from the Lord Jesus Christ. John, referring to our Lord, wrote, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness.” Jesus Himself affirmed this truth, and explained how each one of us can have that light within. saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Following Jesus begins by acknowledging our spiritual darkness and asking His forgiveness. Then we have His light within.
