William Booth’s Last Speech November 9, 2016

“While women weep…while little children go hungry…while there yet remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight…I’ll fight to the very end.” Those are the words of General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army. His life was dedicated to the service of God, and especially to the needy. He believed that people without Christ in their lives were spiritually lost, and he reached them through kindness, feeding the hungry and sharing the gospel to prepare them for heaven. His life mirrors that of the One he served- Jesus Christ. Our Saviour reached out to weeping women, hungry children, and souls in darkness. His mission is described in His own words, “The Son of man has come to seek and to save, that which was lost.” It is, however, not only the poor and homeless who need the gospel, because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Tomorrow is to plan for November 7, 2016

Maurice Chevalier, the French entertainer once said, “Yesterday is to learn from; today is to live in; tomorrow is to plan for.” Well, we live in today, and some learn from yesterday. But the most vital part of Mr. Chevalier’s statement is that tomorrow is to be planned for. And since our tomorrows all lead to eternity, it is wise to prepare for the inevitable rendezvous with our Maker. The prophet Amos advised with the words, “prepare to meet your God.” How do we do that? Join a church? Get baptized? Turn over a new leaf and do good works? Wrong! Surprised? I was, until I learned that “it is by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast.” Please remember Chevalier’s wise advice, “tomorrow is to plan for.”

The World’s Greatest Event November 4, 2016

Amazing events which came into existence in the past have had a revolutionary impact on the world. Here are some examples: The printing press,1450; Anesthesia, 1844; Vaccination:1796. The airplane-1903. The electric light- 1879. The automobile-1885. The telephone:1876; Radio:1895; Television:1927; the computer:1939; and the internet since the mid-nineties. But as great as the impact of these events, they pale in comparison to the life, death and resurrection of one Man- Jesus Christ.” The Bible describes His great mission which resulted in the forgiveness, and transformation of the lives of billions of people. “…when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem …” “… the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Lighthouses November 2, 2016

Atlantic Canada is noted for its picturesque lighthouses. But many are being declared surplus. With up to date navigational methods, many lighthouses have become obsolete. Support for their upkeep is being withdrawn. Admittedly, change is inevitable, but though methods change, the need for warnings of danger remains. This is especially true concerning eternal things. We still need to hear God’s Word telling us, “The wages of sin is death” and “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” It is still important how we react to these warnings from the greatest and most trustworthy book ever written, the inspired Word of God. An old gospel song asks the critical question, “What will you do with Jesus? Neutral you cannot be. Some day your heart will be asking, “what will He do with me?”

Intelligent Designer October 31, 2016

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer holds a PH. D from Cambridge University and is a scholar in the philosophy of science. He is the author of ‘Signature in the Cell: The Evidence for Intelligent Design. In his book Dr. Meyer wrote, “The DNA in every cell of every creature shows unmistakable evidence of having been deliberately designed by an intelligent being.” This brilliant scholar merely underlines what the book of Genesis and other Bible passages clearly states. The God of the Bible is the Intelligent Designer of all life and the universe. The book of Genesis states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” And another brilliant man, Daniel Webster, when asked what was the greatest thought that had crossed his mind, quickly responded, “My personal accountability to God.

The Origin of the Universe October 28, 2016

All the wonders of the world around you are accidental. A thousand billion stars made themselves. The earth magnetized itself. The top few inches of our land just happens to have topsoil, without which we would have no vegetables to eat, no grass for animals, whose meat is our food. That’s correct– some actually think our universe is just one big evolutionary accident. They think we are all animals with no accountability to God. The Psalmist spoke rather bluntly when he wrote, “the fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” Surely only blind, unsubstantiated faith could possibly believe it all just happened by itself without an intelligent Designer. But through the ages, godly humble people have believed the Bible when it says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” .

View From the Moon October 26, 2016

Captain Gene Cernan was the third man to walk in space, one of only three people to go to the Moon twice and the last man to leave a footprint on the lunar surface in December 1972. Cernan’s final words while on the moon were, “you can see from the Antarctic to the North Pole and the continental shores. The earth looks so perfect. You feel…like you are looking back at the earth as God must be looking now, as He must have been when He created it.” Captain Cernan continued, “I am convinced of God by the order in space.” Yes, it’s true, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And every one of us is accountable to Him. Thankfully, John told of God’s love, writing, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” .

I can do it myself October 24, 2016

Kate is a beautiful, young lady, in her 20s attending an Ontario university. When she was very young, and was offered help, often her reply was, “I can do it myself.” While still young, we are taught self-reliance by wise parents. So we conclude “I can do it myself, “and many tasks wecan and should do for ourselves. But nobody is good or strong enough to make it into heaven, because “there is none righteous, no not one.” So doing our best is not good enough since fitness for heaven is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy.. .” If we sincerely want to be ready for heaven, let’s not say, “I can do it myself.” We can’t. But Paul told us about Jesus’ intervention for us, writing, “when we were yet without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly.“ .

Seeking the Lost October 21, 2016

Remember the recent heart-touching story of Gobi? The stray dog had run alongside an extreme marathon runner in a one hundred and fifty-five-mile China race. Dion Leonard, the runner, fell in love with his little furry friend and wanted to take her to the U.K. But then Gobi went missing from her temporary home. Her story made headlines around the world, and after a week, she was found and reunited with the runner. It is a beautiful picture of a much greater story of searching for the lost. You and I are the “lost.” Isaiah the Prophet describes the fallen human race, writing, “All we like sheep have gone astray.” Dr. Luke, in his gospel tells us how we can be found, forgiven and redeemed. He does so in fifteen words, “The Son of Man has come to seek and to find that which was lost.” What love. What a story. What a Saviour! .

Living by Your Own Rules October 19, 2016

I read recently of a police officer in a small town who noticed a number of bull’s eyes painted here and there. In the middle of each was a bullet hole. Learning the identity of the shooter, the officer met him and commented on his amazing ability, saying, “It must have taken hours of practice to accomplish such a feat.” But the young man responded, “No, actually it was quite easy. I shoot first, then draw the circle.” Many practice this intellectual dishonesty when carrying out unacceptable actions, like dishonesty, immorality or unfaithfulness to a spouse. They “draw the circle” and refer to their actions as “preferences” or “the way I see it,” or “everyone’s doing it.” But it won’t work with God. The Bible still says, “ Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” .
