Why Believe in Evolution September 14, 2016

Have you ever wondered why so many people eagerly accept the unproven for themselves? Many merely mimic their teachers or professors without actually studying it out for themselves. Could it possibly be that their thinking is that if evolution is true, and we are all just animals, then we are not responsible for an immoral lifestyle any more than other animals? Is that why our world has sunk to its current vile and filthy condition? But on the other hand, if the Bible is correct when it says” in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”, and He “…created man in His own image…male and female He created them,” then we are all responsible for our lifestyle, and we will one day give account to our Maker. If I were an evolutionist, which I’m not, that would really trouble me.

A Valuable Shoebox September 13, 2016

At a rummage sale in eastern Pennsylvania, Penny McKim purchased a shoebox full of coins and medals. Later, she discovered that one of the medals had originally belonged to famed industrialist and Bethlehem Steel founder, Charles M. Schwab, and was very valuable. Someone did not see its true value. There may also be an item in our lives, which has the power to transform us, that is often ignored and left to gather dust. It is God’s Word, the Bible, which is “living and powerful …” but when neglected, it results in the missing of our relationship with God here and now, and eventually missing heaven. No doubt that is why God inspired the writer of Hebrews in the New Testament, to ask the rhetorical question, “how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” And we won’t escape! Please think about that today.

Our Trustworthy Bible September 12, 2016

An article in Time magazine should be of interest to anyone who has wondered whether the Bible is trustworthy. Here is an excerpt. “Over the past 200 years, the Bible has been subjected to the most rigorous examination of any book in history. It has been looked at archaeologically, historically, and … critically. Not only has the Bible withstood the test, but it has actually emerged better for all the fracas.” And Nelson Gueck, an American academic and archaeologist has written, “It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.” We can take the Bible seriously when it claims, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable.” Millions can testify that when they believed and followed instructions in the Bible, their lives were transformed.

Blinded Minds September 9, 2016

There was a gentle thump on the patio window. A robin had flown into the glass. It wandered around on the patio in a daze for a while, but eventually recovered and flew away. Windows sometimes reflect a bird’s natural habitat, resulting in injury or death. We, too, can be fooled by appearances and lured into bad habits, not seeing what is really there. Although often humorously laughed at as a mythical character, Satan is no joke. Jesus frequently affirmed his existence. Paul was inspired to write of Satan’s work on unsuspecting victims- “whose minds the god of this age (Satan) has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel should shine on them.” When we smile at the thought of Satan being a real person, we are doing exactly what he wants us to do. He has blinded our minds.

Something Missing September 8, 2016

Thieves in Marlborough New Zealand tried to steal a car. But it wouldn’t start. Unknown to them, its engine had been removed for repairs. No connection- no go. But more importantly, we need to be properly connected to God, to receive forgiveness and eternal life. Can we know for sure where we’ll spend eternity? John the disciple wrote, “these things I have written to you that believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life…”. In order to have assurance, we need a proper connection to God. His Word tells us, “He who has the Son has life and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life”. If our connection is merely to religion, we have a serious problem, because Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Divorce and Broken Homes September 7, 2016

In June, Dennis Quaid and Kimberley Buffington announced they are divorcing. On July 15th , Drew Barrymore filed for divorce from husband Will Kopelman. About four in every ten first marriages in Canada now end in divorce. Counsellors find that selfishness is the biggest reason why marriages fail. But there is an antidote to selfishness. The Bible says, “Love does not behave rudely, does not seek its own….” Someone says, “I cannot forgive. I’ve been hurt too much.” Forty-five years ago, Phyllis J. was heartbroken when she learned of her husband’s unfaithfulness. But when she gave her life to Jesus Christ, she was able to forgive Terry, who then became a Christian. My friends Phyllis and Terry have lived happily as husband and wife ever since. Could this happen in your troubled marriage?

When our World falls Apart September 6, 2016

A little girl gave her mother pieces of hardened clay and said, “Mom, my world fell apart.” The mother, realizing the child had made a globe of clay, taped it together. “But Mom,” the child said, “it still has holes and cracks in it.” And often when our world falls apart as a result of illness, death of a loved one or financial ruin, we, too, attempt to “tape it together” again. But the cracks and holes are still with us. Only God can fix our world. We can as David did when he was at the end of his rope, “Hear my cry, O God; … From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. “That Rock is Christ. He helped the Psalmist. If your world is shattered, your heart broken, cry out to the dear Lord Jesus.

Only God can fix it September 5, 2016

Both candidates in the US presidential election, Clinton and Trump, claim they can “fix” their divided country’s problems. In the USA, there is anger over the fact that the share of wealth owned by the top one percent is almost the same as the bottom ninety percent. How could this happen? Paul the Apostle explained it to his young colleague Timothy. He wrote, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have …in their greediness, … pierced themselves through.” This “love of money” is a characteristic of a fallen race, of which we are all a part. The Bible says, “All have sinned…” But The Psalmist, referring to someone in a right relationship with God, wrote, “his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.” That’s the one and only way to fix our moral and spiritual problems.

Cry for Help on the Internet September 2, 2016

A young mother wrote recently, “I don’t want to live! but I can’t die. That’s too hard.” Abandoned by her abusive husband, she now lives with her parents and an aged grandmother. Her fears and guilt are overwhelming and life-threatening. In desperation, she is now reaching out daily by internet, to Prince Edward Island resident, Dr. Wallace Jorden and his family. His response, “Nothing is too hard, when we turn to Jesus in our fears and despair…and ask Him to carry our load.” Then, emphasizing the young mother’s worth and value as a person, loved unconditionally by God, Pastor Jorden wrote of Jesus’ invitation— “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…” That invitation is for all of us.

Vice Presidential Nominee’s Testimony September 1, 2016

“I am a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order. I gave my life to Jesus Christ,” and that’s changed everything.” That is the testimony of Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Mr. Pence explained his conversion using a Bible verse — “Christ Jesus came to save sinners; among whom I am foremost of all.” Governor Pence’s statement that giving one’s life to Christ changes “everything,” is borne out by the words of Paul, who wrote in the New Testament, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.” This life-changing experience is available to all.
