Later than Its ever Been. August 17, 2016

I read recently the unusual story of a kindergarten child who was learning his numbers by counting how many times the clock chimed. Soon he had mastered numbers one to twelve. Then inexplicably, something odd happened. The clock chimed thirteen times. “what comes after number 12 Mommy?” “Thirteen” she answered. “Wow!” exclaimed the child. “It’s thirteen o’clock, later than it’s ever been before!” How good of God to give us this precious gift of time in this life, to get ready for the next life. But we should be careful to heed the warning He gave us when He said, “Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation.” As we view the current startling, frightening events taking place around the world, it is clear that, “It’s later than it’s ever been before.” Are we ready for the life to come? Fear in our Times August 16, 2016

Last month following the racially charged shootings in Dallas, Minnesota and Louisiana the United States, Attorney General, Loretta Lynch said, “Americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness, of uncertainty, and of fear.” Her words remind us of Luke’s predictions concerning the final days of this world as we know it. He spoke of “men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth…” But if we are Christians, we need not be afraid, since God is ultimately in control of events. When we have Christ in our lives, we can be comforted by Paul’s words to believers, writing, “… God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” With Christ in the vessel, we can smile at our storms. life changing decisions August 15, 2016

Rick Osborne made a decision that changed his life, and many other. Osborne, once one of Canada’s most wanted criminals, was in prison and on the verge of suicide. The Gideons, a Christian organization that distributes God’s Word, placed a Bible in his prison cell. Osborne read it, and made the decision to ask Christ into his life. The result: he was transformed by the power of the gospel. He earned a university degree while in prison. He now travels, speaking to youth about the dangers of gangs, drugs and criminal activity. Go to Truth For Teens on the internet to read his amazing story. Mr. Osborne is a living testimony to the New Testament truth “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.” But this is not only for criminals. It is for us all. I’m Alex Rockwell.

Who Cares August 12, 2016

The following heart-breaking events occur daily. Someone has been diagnosed with a serious disease. Who cares? A man died in a traffic accident. Who cares? A young person committed suicide. Who cares? Because there is so much bad news, we can become immune. Silently those hurting cry out for someone who will understand, who will care. Many identify with the Psalmist David, who cried out, “…there is no one who acknowledges me; refuge has failed me; no one cares for my soul.” But there is One Who cares. When he faced heartache and trouble, David’s prayer reveals where we can turn when our lives seem to fall apart, “… I will cry to you, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me.” If broken hearted today, call upon the Lord. I’m Alex Rockwell.

Seeing Yourself August 11, 2016

A young couple who rented a bungalow in Los Angeles found that a nosey neighbour was peeping in their window. But the peeping stopped abruptly when the innovative husband placed a mirror in the window the peeper was using. And God’s Word has been described as a mirror. When we look in it, we see ourselves as God sees us- as we really are. In the book of James in the New Testament, we are warned, “If anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at himself in a mirror…and immediately forgets what kind of person he is.” When we look into the mirror of God’s Word, we see the sober truth about ourselves- “all we like sheep have gone astray…” But we also learn of a Saviour as we read, “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” I’m Alex Rockwell.

Time August 10, 2016

Most would agree that time is our most valuable asset. Much discussion has taken place about how to use it and how we waste it. Eventually it runs out for all of us. An old soldier once said, “there are no atheists on the battlefield.” In the New Testament there’s a fascinating story about the Apostle Paul making his defense before an official named Felix. As Paul “reasoned about righteousness, self-control and judgment to come”, Felix became agitated and responded “Go away now. When I have a convenient time, I will call for you.” Sadly, there is no record of a convenient time ever coming for him. And many of us act like Felix in regards to our preparation for the life to come. We put it off. The wise person will act upon the Bible truth that “Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation.” I’m Alex Rockwell.

The Barking Lion August 9, 2016

When the Liu family went to the People’s Park zoo in China, their disappointed son said the lion was barking like a dog. How come? It was not a lion at all, but a Tibetan mastiff, a large hairy breed of dog which closely resembles a lion. Zoo officials had sent the regular resident, an African lion, away to a breeding centre. The only way to be a lion is to be born one. And John, in his gospel, clearly states that the only way to become a Christian is to be spiritually re-born. Since we are all born with a natural tendency to do wrong he wrote “As many as received Him (Christ) to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name…who were born not of the flesh, but of God.” And that’s why Jesus tells us, “You must be born again.” I’m Alex Rockwell.

Mr. Hockey August 8, 2016

The great hockey legend, Gordie Howe died last month. His son, Doctor Murray Howe, in a moving tribute to his dad, said, “Mr. Hockey left the world with no regrets and although he did not lead the league in church-attendance, his life has been the epitome of a faithful servant.” Attending a Bible believing church is a very positive habit for all. But not doing so does not keep anyone from heaven, because going to church does not make us into Christians anymore than going to a garage makes us into an automobile. The Bible tells us that it’s “not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy” God makes us His children and fits us for heaven. And God’s Word also says that it is, “By grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works…” I’m Alex Rockwell.

The Amazing Bee August 5, 2016

Many more bees are being seen on Prince Edward Island this summer. They are amazing creatures. Think about the following–A worker bee’s eyes have about 7,000 lenses, and hair that has an electrostatic charge that attracts pollen. When the bee locates food, it calls other bees to its location by a series of dance moves. Bees also have wing hooks which can attach each set of wings together during flight, for maximum efficiency. They are equipped with every detail necessary to do their job. And yet, in spite of these marvellous characteristics, some folks say that bees got that way by accident. No—this world and all that is in it was carefully planned. Genesis chapter one says, “… God created every living thing that moves…” Yes, there is an intelligent, designing God to Whom we will all one day give account.

Today’s Buzz Words August 4, 2016

In his book “Stop Talking, Start Communicating”, author Geoffrey Tumlin refers to “too many people weighing in on too many issues.” He is correct. We live in a global village with lots of buzz words like’ ‘game changer’, ‘at the end of the day’, ‘moving forward’, ‘super”, ‘smart’, ‘connect’, and ‘phobia’, (often used to criticize or put down anyone who has a different point of view). But long before today’s communication frenzy, God sent mankind the most important message we will ever receive—His Word, the Bible. In it we find the answers we need to know about God, man, sin, heaven and how to get there. Jesus once said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” The Bible is the greatest book ever written. When read and applied, it changes lives.
