The Little Key-way June 8, 2016

A Maritimer, working on his ride-on tractor, took a rear wheel off. But when the wheel was put back on, and the mower put into gear, nothing happened. Fortunately, a friend helping, found a small item in the grass. It was the ‘key stock’ that connects the wheel to the axle. Without that tiny piece of steel, the mower won’t move. Often, little things in our lives play vital roles. Someone once said “Every decision, no matter how great or small, has its consequences.” And Jesus, said, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God…” Later, He said, “You must be born again.” The decision to receive Christ may seem small, but it’s the greatest one we will ever make. It will determine where we will spend eternity.

Camera in a Contact Lens June 7, 2016

Sony Corporation has submitted a patent application for a camera small enough to fit in a contact lens, worn directly on the human eyeball. It incorporates lens, data storage and a wireless communications module. ‘What next?’ If man is capable of this degree of surveillance, think of the implications of God’s surveillance capabilities. God inspired Ezra to write, “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong…” Then add the inspired words of the Psalmist, who wrote, “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. …You understand my thought … You … are acquainted with all my ways… there’s not a word on my tongue but Lord, You know it altogether.” God knows everything we think or do. Scary or comforting? It depends on our relationship to Him.

Easier Said than Done June 6, 2016

On April 22, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined world leaders in Paris, ratifying a global treaty on climate change. But it’s been said that reducing the gas emissions by thirty percent is easier said than done. And here’s something to think about-regarding our spiritual welfare. It’s easier to say that someday we will make preparation for the next life, than actually doing so. Matthew referred to this tendency, quoting Jesus, writing, “These people draw near to Me with their mouth… but their heart is far from Me…teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” One of these “doctrines of men” is the concept that we work our way to heaven when the Bible plainly says “by grace we are saved through faith, and not by works… it is the gift of God.” .

Tearing Down The Wall June 3, 2016

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Those were the words of US President Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1987. He spoke of the Berlin Wall, built by East Germany in 1961, to keep residents from escaping into Democratic West Berlin. On November 9, 1989, East Germany announced that all citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin This paved the way for German reunification, on October 1990. The Wall was demolished in 1992. This incident is a reminder of a much greater wall between our righteous God and unrighteous mankind, which came down when Christ died on the cross. Paul the Apostle wrote, “For He Himself is our peace…and has broken down the middle wall of separation… that He might reconcile … through the cross…for through Him we … have access to the Father.” .

God’s Global Prescription June 2, 2016

“We received it…it came… the medicine has arrived.” Those were the words of an excited woman, upon learning that medicine to alleviate eye bacteria and pain had finally arrived. Her story is about Global Outreach Mission’s medical ministry in the Republic of Congo, at Pioneer Christian Hospital. While we may complain about the cost of the medicine we need, it is usually readily available. Medicine is crucial for physical needs. And “spiritual medicine” is crucial if spiritual needs are to be met, not only in Africa, but everywhere. God’s global prescription is “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” And it is available to all.

The Return of the Typewriter June 1, 2016

Russian newspaper Izvestia reports that the Federal Guard Service in their country plans to buy 20 typewriters. They believe that this will insure sensitive documents will be safer than those electronically archived. They also use the older secure telephone lines for secret conversations between heads of government. All of us have secrets-but those “secrets” are open to the eyes of our Maker. The Bible says “the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth.” So trying to hide our secrets from God is mission impossible. But when we acknowledge our spiritual bankruptcy (since there is none righteous no not one”) and receive the Lord Jesus into our lives, the Heavenly Father sees us as forgiven and cleansed by Jesus’ work on the cross. We don’t need to try to hide from Him as Adam and Eve tried to hide in the Garden of Eden.

The Panama Papers May 31, 2016

Last month the “Panama Papers” were leaked. They are a set of 11.5 million documents that provide detailed information about more than 214,000 offshore companies showing how wealthy individuals, and public officials, hid their assets from public scrutiny. Reporters found that there may have been illegal activities including fraud, drug trafficking, and tax evasion. Here’s further proof of the Bible’s message that “all we like sheep have gone astray.” Paul warned “ the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed … in their greediness…” Adam and Eve hid from God in the Garden of Eden. They were caught. But God provided another chance for them, as He does for all of us. He gave His Son who “died for our sins” on the cross, and offers forgiveness to all who will receive it. Perhaps some caught by the Panama Papers leak will avail themselves of God’s mercy

Drones and Birds May 30, 2016

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles. They are used for all sorts of purposes. Incidentally, a bird is actually a living airplane. John H. Storer, writing of birds in The Scientific American says “…they are constantly adjusting automatically to air pressure and the changing requirement…” Now if a bird’s wing does something “automatically”, it had to be designed. Everything that adjusts automatically had to be designed. Drones were skillfully and laboriously designed by intelligent scientists and engineers. Nothing just happens. So who made the amazing versatile bird? Something called Chance? No. “God created … every winged bird according to its kind.” He created you and me too. And Christ, His Son “died for our sins” on the Cross.

God’s Storm Cellar May 27, 2016

In Oklahoma, severe weather is common from early spring through the end of summer. To prepare for tornadoes, many residents have a storm cellar for refuge until the bad weather passes by. These tornadoes are like the storms that arise in our lives from time to time. These storms may be illnesses, loss of loved one, marital problems or serious financial setbacks. When they come, we too need a “storm cellar” till the storms pass by. For such times it is good to know the comforting truth that Nahum, the prophet revealed, writing, “The Lord is good. A stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him.” When we become God’s children by placing our faith in His Son, Jesus, we can claim that promise, and “with Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm.”

True Knowledge May 26, 2016

In the US election coming up this year, voters want to know much about the candidates, including their world view. Solomon of old was an observer of people and of life, based on experience, observation and deduction. But his accumulation of knowledge created a greater feeling of emptiness and restlessness A far larger percentage of people today are educated than those of Solomon’s day. Yet the same restlessness prevails. John Milton wrote, “The end of all learning is to know God and out of that knowledge to love and imitate Him. “ Solomon wrote “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” John’s gospel says, “…this is life eternal, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom You sent.” We can know God personally, by faith in His Son Jesus.
