To Live and to Die May 11, 2016

“People are like stained glass windows; they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is only revealed if there is light from within.” Those thoughtful words are from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, in her book, “To Live and to Die.” This light within can only come from the Lord Jesus Christ. John, referring to our Lord, wrote, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness.” Jesus Himself affirmed this truth, and explained how each one of us can have that light within. saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Following Jesus begins by acknowledging our spiritual darkness and asking His forgiveness. Then we have His light within.

William Booth’s Last Speech May 10, 2016

“While women weep…while little children go hungry…while there yet remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight…I’ll fight to the very end.” Those are the words of General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army. His life was dedicated to the service of God, and especially to the needy. He believed that people without Christ in their lives were spiritually lost, and he reached them through kindness, feeding the hungry and sharing the gospel to prepare them for heaven. His life mirrors that of the One he served- Jesus Christ. Our Saviour reached out to weeping women, hungry children, and souls in darkness. His mission is described in His own words, “The Son of man has come to seek and to save, that which was lost.” It is, however, not only the poor and homeless who need the gospel, because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Tomorrow is to plan for May 9, 2016

Maurice Chevalier, the French entertainer once said, “Yesterday is to learn from; today is to live in; tomorrow is to plan for.” Well, we live in today, and some learn from yesterday. But the most vital part of Mr. Chevalier’s statement is that tomorrow is to be planned for. And since our tomorrows all lead to eternity, it is wise to prepare for the inevitable rendezvous with our Maker. The prophet Amos advised with the words, “prepare to meet your God.” How do we do that? Join a church? Get baptized? Turn over a new leaf and do good works? Wrong! Surprised? I was, until I learned that “it is by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast.” Please remember Chevalier’s wise advice, “tomorrow is to plan for.”

The World’s Greatest Event May 6, 2016

Amazing events which came into existence in the past have had a revolutionary impact on the world. Here are some examples: The printing press,1450; Anesthesia, 1844; Vaccination:1796. The airplane-1903. The electric light- 1879. The automobile-1885. The telephone:1876; Radio:1895; Television:1927; the computer:1939; and the internet since the mid-nineties. But as great as the impact of these events, they pale in comparison to the life, death and resurrection of one Man- Jesus Christ.” The Bible describes His great mission which resulted in the forgiveness, and transformation of the lives of billions of people. “…when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem …” “… the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Electrocardiogram May 5, 2016

Last month, a friend went to the emergency department of a Maritime hospital with high blood pressure. As part of her assessment, she was given an electrocardiogram, a picture drawn of the movements of the heart. By reading this “drawing”, health professionals are able to be alerted to possible danger signals. The Heavenly Father has also made an ECG of the heart of all mankind.. He says, “I search the heart.” Then later he gives the result. “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.” Our hearts are so badly damaged by unbelief and wrong-doing, there can be no by-passes or stents. We need a new heart, a spiritual transplant. Jesus explained, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” How is your spiritual health today?

Hope for Diabetics May 4, 2016

Type 1 diabetes affects an estimated three million Americans, and thousands of Canadians. Now Harvard researchers have announced progress in an effective treatment. With human embryonic stem cells, they have been able to produce in quantity, human insulin producing beta cells, equivalent in most every way to the normal cells. If successful, this discovery will transform the lives of millions. In like manner, mankind suffers from a universal disease called sin. It results in murder, rape, greed, selfishness, wars, the breakup of homes, and every kind of evil.. Thankfully, there is a cure available. One Bible verse concisely tells it. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” That’s God’s medicine, and it transforms lives.

Lighthouses May 3, 2016

Atlantic Canada is noted for its picturesque lighthouses. But many are being declared surplus. With up to date navigational methods, many lighthouses have become obsolete. Support for their upkeep is being withdrawn. Admittedly, change is inevitable, but though methods change, the need for warnings of danger remains. This is especially true concerning eternal things. We still need to hear God’s Word telling us, “The wages of sin is death” and “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” It is still important how we react to these warnings from the greatest and most trustworthy book ever written, the inspired Word of God. An old gospel song asks the critical question, “What will you do with Jesus? Neutral you cannot be. Some day your heart will be asking, “what will He do with me?”

Nowhere to Hide May 2, 2016

A few weeks ago, Charlottetown Police Services received a complaint of a vehicle which had been involved in a collision, and left the scene of the accident. Police quickly located the vehicle and charged the 19 year old man with several offences. He had been seen and had nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Wrong-doers are not always seen, but God sees all. Psalm 139 reminds us, “O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up…where can I flee from Your presence? “One of the greatest truths in life is that there is no escape from God. We may run, but we cannot ultimately hide from our Maker. But we do not need to run from Him. His arms are open to all who come humbly to Him. He says, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. “

The Noisy Dishwasher April 29, 2016

Bruce Luscombe operates an appliance repair business on Prince Edward Island. At a customer’s home last month, he found a noisy dishwasher. Bruce, a trained experienced technician, quickly found that the problem was that pieces of food and other things had accumulated in the “chopper.” He removed them and the dishwasher now operates quietly and cleans dishes properly. We too have a problem. We are not operating properly. Paul wrote, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Isaiah warned, “ your iniquities have separated you from your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you.” He also explained how to come into a proper relationship with God, to “operate” properly. He said, “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near…He will abundantly pardon.

Alligator who went to Wendy’s April 28, 2016

Joshua James of Florida threw a three and a half foot alligator through a Wendy’s drive-thru window. Then he took his drink and drove off. The alligator was captured and released in the wild. No one was hurt. Imagine the look on the faces of the other customers! It was “bizarre.” It just goes to show that you don’t know what to expect when you wake up in the morning. Although this event of the alligator is trivial, it does prove that life can throw many unexpected events in our path, such as accidents, sudden illness, severed relationships, loss of jobs and more. The Psalmist told us what to do when the unexpected comes. He wrote “When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” Do you know who the Rock is? It’s the Lord Jesus, the Rock of Ages. In our distress, when unpleasant surprises come, we can turn to Him.
