A Gift Certificate from God November 29, 2019

As November ends, many people are already thinking of Christmas and gift giving. Giving gift certificates has become increasingly popular. If you receive a gift certificate you can go to a designated store and receive merchandise free. The price has already been paid. In the same way, we can all receive a gift certificate from God. The Bible clearly states, “All have sinned.” But it also clearly states “Christ died for our sins.” Because of that wonderful act of love, God offers a gift certificate to all. If activated, the result is forgiveness of sin and eternal life. The price has already been paid. John, in his gospel explained it as follows— “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made November 27, 2019

Dr. A.C. Guyton, one-time head of the Medical School of the University of Mississippi, made the following remarkable statement— “The human body is the most beautifully engineered and most complicated system there is. It works by means of several hundred patterns of control, each affecting the other. The brain has ten billion nerve cells to record what you learn. The information travels inside you at speeds of up to three hundred miles per hour over a network of nerves and fibers, one hundred miles long. No wonder the Psalmist David was inspired to write “I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” But he also acknowledged that he was responsible to his Maker, praying, “Search me O God … and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” God holds us responsible for what we do with our wonderful bodies.

The New Glasgow Bell November 25, 2019

In 1901 the town of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia installed a massive bell in the Post Office tower. For fifty years it was used to announce fires. Its clapper has now been removed, the bell no longer rings, and is kept as an historic artifact. The Bible too sounds out its bell-like message of warning and hope. Many have tried unsuccessfully to silence it. But still, in 2019, God’s Word sounds forth the truth that “all have sinned”. We are unable to forgive or prepare ourselves for heaven. That’s because it is “by grace we are saved through saved and not of ourselves.” And it loudly proclaims that there is “No other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” If we are wise, we will heed God’s warning bell, the Bible. And if we sincerely and humbly respond to His love, He will come into our lives and rescue us.

The World’s most successful Lawyer November 22, 2019

Sir Lionel Luckhoo of Guyana, a brilliant lawyer, politician and diplomat had a long and distinguished career. The Guinness Book of Records named him as the world’s most successful lawyer and he was twice knighted by the Queen. Here is an amazing quote from him. “I have spent more than forty-two years as a defense lawyer…, and I say unequivocally, the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ is so overwhelming that it compels acceptance by proof which leaves absolutely no room for doubt. “Sir Lionel is right in line with the words of our Saviour Himself, who wrote famously, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” But it gets even better, because our risen Saviour said, “Because I live, you shall live also.”

Our greatest example of Sharing November 20, 2019

In September, hurricane Dorian wreaked havoc in the Maritimes. Last month a very destructive snowstorm hit Manitoba. It seems that there is no end of reports of devastation by natural disasters. At such times relief agencies welcome donations of money, food and clothing. Doctor Luke, in his gospel was inspired to write “He who has two tunics let him give to him who has none, and he who has food do likewise.” Jesus was the greatest example of sharing. It is written of Him, “… you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” Jesus left heaven to die on the cross that we who believe might live. Our Lord gave His life to help a needy world. That help is still available to all.

Measuring our own Goodness November 18, 2019

A small boy announced to his mother that he was as tall as the Bible giant Goliath. Investigating this alleged growth spurt, she found that her little son had made his own measuring stick, and it was far shorter than he claimed. We laugh, but really, we are often guilty of measuring our goodness by our own standards! Compared to some others, we consider ourselves quite righteous. But God’s measuring stick is perfection and by His standards, “There is none righteous, no not one.” Mercifully though, God has provided help for us in the person of Jesus, His perfect Son. When He died on the old rugged cross, He paid the penalty for all our sins. The Bible actually says, “Christ died for our sins.” Now it is up to us to ask forgiveness and accept God’s gift to us.

Wrong driver at the Wheel November 15, 2019

In Abington Scotland, astonished onlookers watched as an automobile, with a border collie at the wheel. rolled down a hill, across a major highway and finally hit a security barrier. Farmer Hamilton had left the collie in the vehicle, while inspecting his flock of lambs. Sometimes we feel ourselves spinning out of control and like the dog in this story, we don’t know how to stop. The Bible reminds us, “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” When our lives become aimless, it is time to vacate the driver’s seat and invite God to take control. We can all take a lesson from the Psalmist David, who wrote famously, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” He closed with the comforting words, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
