A brave Soldier October 7, 2020

On December 4, 2007, a 19-year-old soldier, serving in Iraq saw a grenade being thrown from a house top. Manning the machine gun in the turret of his Humvee, he tried to deflect the explosive, but it fell inside the vehicle. Though he had time to jump to safety, he threw his body over the grenade in a selfless act that saved the lives of four fellow soldiers. This act of sacrifice illustrates what Jesus did for us when He took the punishment for our sin on the old rugged cross. Paul the Apostle wrote concerning Jesus’ death in our place, “… perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Those four soldiers will never forget the soldier who died for them. We should never forget Christ’s death for us.

Message in a Bottle October 5, 2020

It was scooped up from the sea after 98 years – a bottle with a message. Fisherman Andrew Leaper found the bottle, which was part of a government experiment to map the under currents of the sea. At the time, it was the oldest message ever recorded in a bottle. But there is another much older message, not in a bottle, but in a book.. In this remarkable book, we read many wonderful messages. Here’s one – “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” That’s the famous John 3:16 from the Bible, God’s Word. God did all this that we might be forgiven. The 98-year-old message in the bottle is remarkably interesting. But this timeless message in the Bible can be the means of preparing us for the next life.

Going the Wrong Way October 2, 2020

About 355 North American drivers die annually from crashes caused by travelling the wrong way Some are drunk, some fleeing police, some take the wrong ramp. But the results are tragic. Most of us know that the Bible also talks about two ways, and two destinations. We are all given a choice, either the way that leads to life or the way that leads to destruction. One way involves acceptance of God’s way, the other involves refusing God’s way. Proverbs reminds us that “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Jesus also spoke of that broad popular way and that narrow less travelled way. But He made it crystal clear what our choice about eternal things should be when he said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Hurricane Season 2020 October 1, 2020

We are now in the dangerous and destructive Atlantic hurricane season, with hurricanes given names like Paulette, Teddy and Sally. During these times we are urged to prepare by covering window glass to prevent shattering, removing all outdoor furniture, and taking other safeguards. Preparedness is always a good idea, but not just for physical disasters. God’s Word reminds us that “we know not what a day may bring forth.” Amos, in the Old Testament warned, “Prepare to meet your God.” He was referring to preparation for the next life with which each of has an appointment. That preparation takes place when we receive Christ, Who “died for our sins” as our personal Saviour . Then, God’s Word promises “having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

MISSED OPPORTUNITY Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Magnificent violinist Joshua Bell played to a sold-out audience in Boston, where seat costs averaged $100 each. Two days later, he played incognito on a $3.5 million dollar Stradivarius violin for 45 minutes to thousands at a Metro station in Washington, D.C. There was no recognition and almost no tips. Why? Nobody recognized Bell as one of the best musicians in the world. John, in his gospel, wrote about our Savior: “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” “But as many as received Him, to them he gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name.” Are we missing out on a relationship with the greatest person who ever lived? He is waiting to meet us

UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED Tuesday, September 29, 2020

In his book “A Guide to the Planets,” Patrick Moore wrote of our beautiful earth: “It is the only world in the solar system upon which we could survive.” Why did he write that? Because if the earth were smaller or larger than 8,000 miles in diameter, by as little as 10%, all life could cease to exist. For the earth to be habitable, it must have an adequate supply of light, heat, a uniform distribution of water, and an atmosphere of proper density and composition. Our planet has all of these. Why are they so uniformly distributed on earth, making life possible? Because God our Creator did it. That’s why He inspired the human author of Genesis to write, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

ONE BIG EVOLUTIONARY ACCIDENT ? Monday, September 28, 2020

All the wonders of the world around you are accidental. No intelligent diving planner keeps them on their steady courses. A small flower invented itself so that we could extract digitalis for sick hearts. No one put the oil just deep enough in the earth to keep until we need it. Yes, some folks think our universe is just one big evolutionary accident, and that we are all animals. As animals, we are not accountable to God. Interestingly, the psalmist was inspired to write, “The food has said in his heart, there is no God.” Did all this just happen by itself? Only blind, unsubstantiated faith could possibly believe it all just happened by itself. Through the ages, sincere, thinking people have believed the Bible when it says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

COSTCO FOR PEI ? Friday, September 25, 2020

There is no Costco on Prince Edward Island, a disappointment for many Islanders. Many drive to access the retail giant in Moncton or Halifax. The reason is for bargains. Speaking of bargains, the greatest offer of bargains ever is in the Bible. Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet, was inspired to write, “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! […] without money and without price.” That’s an offer for all. We are unable to pay to have our sins forgiven because only God can do that. We cannot buy our way into heaven. Though “the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.” That is a bargain none of us can afford to miss. It is open to all who will, by faith, receive it.

A PILL FOR EVERY PROBLEM Wednesday, September 23, 2020

“North Americans have become conditions into believing that there is a prescription for every common ache or disease,” according to newspaper columnist Dr. W. Gifford Jones. This philosophy is troubling because the root cause is often overlooked. Sadly, many take the same approach regarding our spiritual needs as well. We try improving ourselves by going to church, getting baptized, or giving to charities, all hoping to impress God. But the Bible teaches us that behind our moral and spiritual problem is the heart. We read, “Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” We need to admit honestly that we need a new heart, not spiritual pills, due to our root problem—our fallen sin nature.

A DOCTOR’S GREATEST DISCOVERY Monday, September 21, 2020

Many medical doctors are evangelical Christians. Dr. Nelles Silverthorne was a pediatrician and a research scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. When whooping cough was a dreaded disease, he worked on the development of a vaccine for immunization against it. He was a pioneer who assisted in the development of the oxygen tent and one of the first physicians to use penicillin. But Silverthorne says his “greatest discovery ever” was when he became a Christian. He said, “Whoever reads this, please be assured that being a born again Christian is the greatest decision and the most thrilling experience you can have on earth.” Dr. Silverthorne knew that Jesus had said, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,” and that, “You must be born again.”
