Murder Hornet October 4

It was on August 13th that the first live “murder hornet” of 2021 was spotted approximately one kilometer from the Canada-US border. These intimidating hornets are up to five centimeters long and have a sting similar to being plunged with a red hot thumb tack. It is a sting anyone would want to avoid. Did you know the Bible speaks of a sting that we can get impaled with? Thankfully it also tells us how we can avoid this sting. In 1 Corinthians it reads, “The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The sting of death is separation from God, and His commandments reveal to us that we do not measure up, and that is greatly concerning, but thankfully through faith in Christ that sting can be avoided.

Good Communication – September 30

This past year, in an article entitled The Importance of Good Parent-Child Communication, it was noted how the communication process with your children is effective when you take it to three levels: listening; creating an environment of trust; spending more time with your child. The fact is good communication is key to any vital relationship. Did you know the Bible makes it clear that God invites his children to communicate with Him? In the book of Jeremiah 33:3 it reads, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” The way to enter into this relationship and become a child of God is through Jesus Christ. He says in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through M

Being Quiet – September 29

Do you ever want to get away from all of the distractions of our electronic age? If so you may want to go to Greenbank, West Virginia. It is known as the “the quietest town in America”. It is also home to the world’s largest steerable radio telescope. The telescope needs “quiet” to “listen” to naturally occurring radio waves. A 13,000 square-mile is established to prevent electronic interference to the telescope’s extreme sensitivity. The intentional quiet allows the scientists to hear the “music of the spheres.” Did you know that we are encouraged in the Bible to take time to limit the distractions in our own lives and listen? In the Bible in the book of Psalms it reads, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Are you taking time to be still and are you listening?

A Birth that Gets Your Attention – September 27

This past summer a baby girl born in Singapore went home for the first time after 13 months in the hospital. This baby was born in June of last year after the mom being pregnant for only 24 weeks. At birth the baby only weighed 7.5 ounces! That is the weight of a large apple or a grapefruit. Her birth and survival caught the attention of news outlets around the world being that this is likely the lightest baby to ever have survived a premature birth. Did you know in the Bible Jesus speaks of a birth that has caught the attention of people all around the world. He says this in relation to this birth, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” This is a birth that is worth looking into!

Donation of the Century – September 24

This past summer museum visitors were given the first look at some of the 23,000 art works donated to South Korea from the collection of Samsung’s late, Lee Kun-hee. The family announced the donation as it seeks to settle an inheritance tax bill of over 10.4 billion dollars. Many in the art world have labeled this as the donation of the century. Did you know in the Bible there is the donation, the gift of the eternity? A gift that is made available that is of such value that nothing else has ever or will ever compare with it. What is so unfathomable is that you can receive it. In the book of Ephesians it reads, 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

$200 Fries – September 22

This past summer the restaurant Serendipity 3, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side was certified by the Guinness World Records as charging the largest amount for fries. The cost of fries in this establishment will cost you $200. What is even more surprizing in relation to such an astronomical price is people are buying. The restaurant has had an 8-10 week waiting list of people wanting to dine in and get the fries. I would say people are desiring something in this case that will not be worth the expense. In the Bible, Jesus speaks of having a desire that He tells can definitely be satisfied. He says in the book of Matthew, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled.” The Bible also tells us that the means to experience this righteousness, is through Jesus.

Cost of the Tokyo Olympics – September 20

Now that the Tokyo Olympics are over did you happen to hear what the total costs were? A university of Oxford study says that it was the most expensive Olympics on record. The official price tag for the Tokyo Olympics was 15.4 billion US dollars. That is an unfathomable amount. If you were to save a hundred dollars a day it would take you 10 million days to save up a billion dollars. That is over 27 thousand years. Try to picture 15.4 billion! Something else we cannot fathom is the cost of making provision for our salvation. The bible tells us in John 3:16 that, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Lost – September 17

This past summer a hiker was lost in a provincial park in BC for two weeks and was found alive. Daniel Ring was dropped off at Elfin Lakes, in the provincial park, and was planning to be picked up two days later. He did not return to his pickup location and search and rescue began looking for him. Landon James, of Search and Rescue said he was elated when Daniel Ring was found. He shared that to be lost for that period of time and to be found alive was extremely rare. Did you know the Bible tells us God is looking for individuals who fit a particular description but they are not that easy to find? Isaiah 66:2 reads, “but on this one will I look: On whomever is of a poor and contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word. Do you happen to fit that description?

Wrong Fuel – September 15

Recently a gas station in Southern Alberta had its tanks accidently filled with the wrong fuel upon delivery. Gasoline was put in the diesel tank and diesel was put in the gas tank. After being unnoticed for three days, the mix up left a lot of customers frustrated with a number of hefty repair bills. The fact is the wrong fuel can cause a lot of problems. On the flip side though, the right fuel can allow things to work as they should. Did the know the Bible tells us that there is a type of fuel a person should be tapping into if they are in a relationship with God. It is not described in the form of gasoline but rather it is described in the form of milk. It is identified in 1 Peter 2:2 which states, “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”

Hurricane Season – September 13

With it being September, we are in the peak time for hurricane season. Unfortunately, many people around the world will be affected. Something that helps limit the effects of a hurricane is for people to act wisely. According to the Red Cross one of the most important things anyone can do when in a hurricane is to ensure they have appropriate shelter. With the proper shelter, while the storm may be raging, a person remains save inside. In the Bible, there is instruction for a person to seek shelter in relation to the storms of life. It speaks of a shelter that is readily available through experiencing a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. In Psalms 46:1 it reads, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
