101 and still lobster fishing October 27

I was greatly inspired to read in the news last month of a lady who has been lobster fishing since she was 8 and fished this past lobster season in Maine at 101. Yes 101 and still lobster fishing. Virginia Oliver still faithfully lobster fishes off Rockland, Maine, with her 78-year-old son Max. What a testimony to living long. I find it fascination to ponder the age of God which we are made aware of in the Bible. We read of His age in the book of Psalms which reads, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting You are God.” It is inspiring to consider a person still lobster fishing at 101. It is mind boggling to consider the eternality of God being that He never began and He will never end.

Desperation to Absolute Joy October 25

Last month police in Australia found a three-year-old boy alive and well after being lost in the woods alone for three nights. Hundreds of people were desperately looking for the boy until he was finally found by a police rescue helicopter. A pilot who helped find the young boy described his own reaction upon finding the child as “absolute joy”. Can you imagine the change of dynamic upon looking for the child being of absolute desperation to upon finding him being absolute joy? The bible presents a scenario that each person has that can take an individual from desperation to absolute joy which is upon a person trusting in Jesus Christ as ones Saviour. Romans 6:23 reads, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Causing people to take notice October 22

Last month, in Ireland, a rescue crew saved a lost swimmer who was stranded at sea for twelve hours. When the young man in his thirties was found he was exhausted and hypothermic. The rescue crew was able to spot this man because a pod of dolphins surrounded the man until the rescue team came along and took him into their boat. Thankfully the pod of dolphins drew the attention of the rescue team and they responded. Did you know the Bible directs those who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to do something to get other people’s attention? In this case it is to get their attention on God. Jesus says in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

750 million dollar bonus October 20

It was noted in the news recently that Tim Cook, of Apple received 750 million dollars worth of shares on his tenth anniversary of being CEO of the company. That is a lot of money! Could you ever imagine having something that is of such great worth? Did you know the Bible tells us that individuals can have something that is of more value than any amount of money? The value of what we are told about is not only because of its worth but its longevity. It lasts forever. Jesus shares this in Matthew 6:19-20 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The time a hot dog will take off your life October 18

Recently the University of Michigan published a study that suggested that eating one hot dog can take 36 minutes off your life. The study looked at more than 5,800 foods common in the U.S. diets and the amount of healthy life gained or lost after eating them. I don’t know what the Canadian hot dog equivalent would be but I am hopeful it would not be the same. The fact is though, life is short and we would be wise not simply to watch what we eat but ensure while we are here to get to know the one whom the Bible describe as the giver of life, breath, and all things. The time we have to do this is relatively short so it is not something to put off. We are told in James 4:14, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

Putrid Flower October 15

This past summer a beautiful but putrid smelling flower went into full bloom at Vancouver’s Bloedel Conservatory for the second time in three years. The beautiful titan arum plant, native to the Sumatra region in Indonesia, has been described as smelling like “rotten flesh, with notes of old fish and decayed cabbage”. It is hard to believe something so beautiful could produce something so putrid. In Jesus day he makes a comparison of something that appears to be beautiful but has a disgusting element to it. What Jesus describes is self-righteousness. In describing the self-righteous religious rulers of His day, He describes them as, “whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” Not a picture you would want to emulate!

Laser-like focus October 13

The late Martial Arts legend Bruce Lee was quoted as saying, “the successful warrior is the average man with laser-like focus.” I trust you have recognized the importance of the right focus in your own life. Jesus shares in John 14:15, if you love me you will keep my commandments. A problem that some people have faced is they have not focused on the most important aspect of this verse, loving Jesus, they have focused on obedience. The problem is obedience is not to be the focus but love which will produce obedience. Jesus was asked one day, what is the greatest commandment given in the Law? He responded by saying, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Give Thanks October 11

In Canada Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October. In the United States it is the fourth Thursday in November. Regardless of whether you live in Canada or in the US it is focused around food and being thankful. It is celebrated and enjoyed by many. Did you know that in the Bible, that for those who have trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, the season of Thanksgiving gets extended beyond October or November. In the book of Thessalonians it reads, “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” That which an individual is to be thankful for is not necessarily what has happened because sometimes negative things happen such as a loss of a job, relationship breakup, or health decline. What an individual is to be thankful for is that God will carry them through what has happened.

An Amazing Reunion October 8

This past summer a very unique reunion happened. Martin Adler, a 97 year old World War II vet from Florida flew to Italy to be reunited with three children he is attributed with saving in 1944 while the Nazis were retreating. Upon meeting the children, whom are now in their eighties, he brought them the same present he shared with them just after saving them many years ago. He handed them each a chocolate bar. Imagine the joy that would have been present with those children, now elderly adults, meeting the one who saved them. It is quite a thing to ponder but for those who have placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation there is an amazing reunion that awaits. Jesus says in John 14:3, “And I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself…”

Bells and Whistles October 6

We are in the time of year that most of the new models of cars and trucks are now available to be purchased. With the 2022 models there will be all kinds of bells and whistles that will be available to the new owners. I wonder how many people will purchase certain perks and drive their cars or trucks and not even take advantage of what has been made available to them. Something else I would be interested to know has to do with a statement made by Jesus Christ in John 10:10 which reads: “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” How many people have entered into a personal relationship with God through Christ and have not taken full advantage of all that Jesus has made available by properly investing into growing in that relationship?
