The Importance of a Strong Foundation – August 18

The collapse of the 13-story condo near Miami just over a month ago was an absolute tragedy. So many lives were lost. Studies will be on going to determine the cause. Rodrigo Salgado, author of the Engineering of Foundation, was quoted as saying, “there were reports of cracks in the superstructure of the condo building and possibly some movement in the foundation.” Something all builders know is the foundation is key to the strength of the structure. In the Bible Jesus talks about the importance of a strong foundation in reference to our lives. He says this, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

A Costly Plant – August 16

Recently a house plant in New Zealand was sold for a record amount. It is hard to believe but in an online auction bidding war a house plant sold for 19,200 US dollars. Apparently in New Zealand house plants have increased in value and have become very popular to sell online over the past couple of years. Who could ever imagine a house plant could be worth almost twenty thousand US dollars? Something that is of infinite worth that has not changed the price of purchase over the years has to do with being able to experience salvation. The reason the price has not changed is that it is a gift, you cannot buy it. You can only experience it through faith in Jesus Christ. In the Bible in Ephesians 2:8-9 it reads, “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Seeing Clearly – August 13

When I am swimming in the ocean I often dive under the water and open my eyes so I can see my surroundings. I like to know if there are any jellyfish in my path or if there is anything interesting fish around me. The problem is though when I open my eyes everything is not crystal clear. It is blurry. Now when I take a diving mask with me and put it on and open my eyes under water everything becomes crystal clear and I do not miss a thing. In a similar way the Bible makes it clear for us to be able to see our standing before God apart from Jesus Christ. The first half of Romans 6:23 reads, “For the wages of sin is death”. That reveals to us our desperate situation speaking of future separation from God. Thankfully the rest of the verse reveals a way of escape, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Feeling Empty? – August 11

Prince Edward Island artist, Abe Waterman, started his summer off well by winning $6000 at a sand sculptor contest in New Hampshire. His sculptor that won first prize was 10 feet tall and double sided with a man’s face on one side and a woman’s on the other, with tear lines cut out to connect one set of eyes to each other. There are also figures before each face on the ground expressing anguish. His winning sculpture is called Empty. Waterman described it as a “quite personal piece.” Did you know the Bible addresses an aspect of being empty that has to do with you? It also addresses a means to fill this emptiness. The means to do so is to fill it with something that is beyond value that is accessible. Ephesians 3:19 reads, “to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Painting Found in a Dumpster – August 9

Recently two framed oil paintings were found in a roadside dumpster by a gentleman in southeast Germany. They were both painted by talented artists back in the mid 1600’s. Needless to say the value of the paintings found in the dumpster are of great worth. In the Bible, Jesus shares about a treasure that is found that is of great worth. He tells of a man who found a treasure in a field and then went and sold all that he had to buy the field so he could have the treasure. The treasure represents the kingdom of heaven that is of infinite worth beyond what we can fully comprehend but we can possess it. The way to it is through Jesus! He said in John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me.

Communication now available! – August 6

Last month researchers from the University of California San Francisco developed a technology that successfully gave a paralysed man the ability to speak in full sentences through the use of “speech prosthesis”. It appears to be the first successful demonstration of direct decoding of full words from the brain activity of someone who is paralyzed and cannot speak. This technology will provide a new way of life for this man. Did you know when a person places one’s faith in Jesus for salvation they not only experience a new way of life but experience a new relationship. We know from John 1 that for those who trust in Jesus Christ it reads, “to them He gave the right to become children of God.” In this new relationship there is communication that is made possible in which a person can now talk to their heavenly father. This means of communication is prayer.

Tossed in the Air – August 4

Something I did with my children, when they were little, was I would toss them up in the air and catch them. Their faces would show a mix of concern overshowed by absolute joy. The reason they could experience joy was due to the fact that while they were in the air they knew I would catch them. Having a relationship with God, made possible by Jesus Christ, has a connection with what I just shared. We are told by Jesus that in this world we will have trouble but be of good cheer because I have overcome the world. There are times in life when it seems like we are up in the air and it can be scary but when we are there a person has to decide whether to focus on their hardship or their heavenly father. In the book of Deuteronomy 33:27 we read, “The eternal God is your refuge, And underneath are the everlasting arms”.

Getting In Easier than Getting Out – August 2

Last month a teen in Colorado displayed some poor driving that placed him in a real predicament. When he got into their family car his mistakenly put it into reverse rather than drive and pressed on the accelerator. He ended up parking the car at the bottom of the family pool. He got out easily but getting the car out was very difficult. An article that shared the story was entitled, “Going in…a bit easier than coming out.” It is interesting because we know from the Bible that getting into sin is a lot easier than getting out. In fact it is made known to us that there is nothing we can do in and of ourselves to completely address sin. The only way is through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 reads, “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

The Right Response July 30

When I was 12 years old I was walking along the beach with my family and there was a lady erratically screaming out in the water with a man floating face down beside her. My father ran out to grab the man and bring him to shore. He body was limp and he was not breathing. We later found out he had taken a heart attack. My father knew first aid and he immediately assigned someone to call 911. It is interesting because spiritually, apart from a work of God, we are all in an absolutely desperate situation and in need of help. We need our sins forgiven. Thankfully help in available! We are told in John 3:16 that, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” By the way, the man, whom had taken the heart attack and received First Aid, he survived.

An Unusual Catch July 28

Last month two fishermen fishing off the coast of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, had an unusual catch. They caught a deer that was swimming far from shore. They rescued the deer by getting the boat close enough to get a rope around its neck to hold it in place and lifted the animal into the boat. They later released the deer close to shore and watched it swim to the beach and then go into the woods. Before being rescued that deer was in desperate shape. Did you know in this life we are all spiritually in desperate shape before being rescued? The Bible tells us, “For the wages of sin is death”. That places us in desperate shape because we have all sinned but thankfully the rest of that verse reads, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Receiving this gift is made possible through a person recognizing their need of forgiveness of sin and placing their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior.
