Jackie Robinson October 28, 2020

This summer Major League Baseball celebrated the life of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play major league baseball. Throughout his decade- long career with the Brooklyn Dodgers., he helped the team win the World Series in 1955. He retired with a career batting average of .311. For a while during his youth, Robinson ran with a neighborhood gang. An older friend helped him to realize how he was hurting his mother and himself. Jackie listened, and left the gang. He traded his wishbone for a backbone. Perhaps you are saying, “ I wish I could I could be a Christian, but its just easier to run with the crowd.” Why not trade your wishbone for a backbone like Jackie Robinson did. And why not heed the invitation, to “ Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.”

Valuable Shoebox October 26, 2020

In eastern Pennsylvania, Penny McKim purchased a shoebox full of coins and medals. Later she discovered that one of the medals had originally belonged to famed industrialist and Bethlehem Steel founder, Charles M. Schwab and was extremely valuable. Clearly, someone did not recognize its true value and abandoned it. There are many other valuable but underestimated items in our lives too. For example, the Bible, which has the power to transform lives, is often ignored and gathers dust. Of this great book it is written, “The Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, discerning the thoughts and intents of the heart.” To underestimate and neglect the truth concerned in God’s Word is to lose something unbelievably valuable. We shouldn’t let that happen.

Our Trustworthy Bible October 23, 2020

Many sincere people do not believe the Bible is true and accurate. If that is your view, please consider to the following. We know that the Bible was written over a period of 1500 years by many different writers who lived in different time, were from different countries, and spoke different languages. And though many critics have tried, even in the courts, nobody has ever been able to prove error or contradictions in the original manuscripts of the Bible. How was this possible? God was the author and He inspired humans to write what He wanted written. The Bible claims that “All scripture is written by inspiration of God”, and it explains that “holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” This trustworthy book tells us that God offers forgiveness and cleansing and urges us to “Seek the Lord while He may be found.”

Joni Erickson Tada October 21, 2020

In 1967, Joni (Joanie) Erickson Tada, a promising teenage athlete, broke her neck in a diving accident, leaving her totally paralyzed. She spent twenty-five years in a wheelchair, but then failing health forced her to go back to bed. Her loving husband Ken hung a bird feeder outside her window. Watching the birds, she remembered that Jesus said we are all worth more than sparrows. Joni, now an author, artist, Founder and Host of Joni and Friends, wrote, “ If the great God of heaven concerns Himself about a little ragtag sparrow, He cares about me.” She thought, how God must have loved us, to give Jesus His Son to provide forgiveness, cleansing and someday a home in heaven. Joni’s story reminds us that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Our Vast Universe October 19, 2020

Glen Roberts, writing in the Halifax Chronicle Herald, tells of being asked by his eight year old granddaughter, “Poppy, how big is the universe?” Roberts explained that the universe is so large that it must be measured in light years. His granddaughter responded, “That is pretty big isn’t it?” Yes, the universe is vast. David, the Psalmist made a remarkable statement in Psalm 8, writing, “When I consider your heavens, what is man that you are mindful of him?” But God is not only “mindful” of us, He also loves us. John the Apostle was inspired to write, “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him.” That “living” refers to eternal life. It is available to all.

Time and Eternity October 16, 2020

Aline Chretien, John Turner, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg are just three famous people who have died recently, reminding us that time is passing. But even if still young, let’s remember these words of Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say I have no pleasure in them.” We are not going to be here forever. David the Psalmist wrote, “…As for man, his days are like grass, as a flower of the field, so he flourishes, for the wind passes over it and it is gone.” We are however, going to live somewhere. Where that is depends on our relationship with Jesus. John, writing in the New Testament explained, “This is the testimony, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

Immortality October 14, 2020

We are told that Ponce De Leon went to Florida in the 1500s to search for a spring with waters having the power of restoring youth. The idea of physical immortality is fascinating. Dr. Phillip Minton of Stanford University wrote in his book “The Immortality Enzyme” that soon there will be an enzyme on the market that will be used to fight aging, cancer and heart disease. While we cannot achieve immortality on our own, an immortal state is freely available. Jesus promised, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” So, a fountain of youth leading to physical immortality is not going to happen. But receiving eternal life? That can happen if we trust in the One who promised, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

Starting Over on Thanksgiving October 12, 2020

Perhaps this Thanksgiving, you are aware that you have not lived a life of gratitude in spite of the good life and blessings you have and are wanting to start over. In his book” Come Before Winter”, Dr. Charles Swindoll made the following insightful statement.- “To start over, you have to know where you are… maybe you are ready to change your mind about … your lifestyle, the next life, and God. “Well said, Dr. Swindoll. King David, speaking for us all, in reference to man’s fallen nature, wrote in Psalm 51, “ Behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin my mother conceived me.” Thankfully, when we sincerely want to start over, Jesus offers us forgiveness for the past and hope for the future. Referring to the door of each life, He said, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.”

Counterfeit Message October 9, 2020

Counterfeit money, CDS, DVDS are everywhere, sometimes deceiving even the most wary. We all need to be aware of falsehood in every form, but especially when it come to things eternal. Isaiah the prophet was inspired to write, “ Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” He referred to those who present a counterfeit message. Today many falsely teach that we have a “Divine nature”, and that by fanning our imagined innate goodness, we become Christians. This is a counterfeit message. God’s Word teaches that we are all part of a fallen nature, since “All have sinned” and “There is none righteous, not one.” Thankfully however, Jesus has told us, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

A brave Soldier October 7, 2020

On December 4, 2007, a 19-year-old soldier, serving in Iraq saw a grenade being thrown from a house top. Manning the machine gun in the turret of his Humvee, he tried to deflect the explosive, but it fell inside the vehicle. Though he had time to jump to safety, he threw his body over the grenade in a selfless act that saved the lives of four fellow soldiers. This act of sacrifice illustrates what Jesus did for us when He took the punishment for our sin on the old rugged cross. Paul the Apostle wrote concerning Jesus’ death in our place, “… perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Those four soldiers will never forget the soldier who died for them. We should never forget Christ’s death for us.
