The Inside Look April 10, 2017

An X-ray was ordered when external examinations failed to reveal the reason for a Maritime woman’s severe pain. The trouble was found and the lady is healthy today. When Jesse, the father of King David was surprised that his young son was chosen to be king of Israel, the Lord explained, “do not look at his appearance…for the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” We cannot see into each other’s hearts, but God can. And the prophet Jeremiah described what God sees when He looks inside. He wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked…” Doctors cannot always fix what X-rays reveal about us. But God can fix our sin problem when we are connected by faith to Jesus.

Better Person-Transformed Person April 7, 2017

Roman Totenberg was a famous Polish-American violinist, and educator who died in 2012. Totenberg played his beloved Stradivarius violin around the world. But one night in 1980, his heart was broken when the beloved violin was stolen. It was only found after his death. Upon his passing, his daughter, Nina Totenberg said “…one of the Boston University vice presidents sent me an email …saying that my dad had made everyone he dealt with ‘a better person.’ “But there is Someone more remarkable- Jesus Christ. Of Him it can be said that everyone He deals with can become a transformed person. Paul wrote of this wonderful transformation, “If anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation…all things have become new.”

The Ultimate change April 5, 2017

In October 2015, Justin Trudeau was elected as Prime Minister of Canada. Last November Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. These two leaders are making huge changes to millions of people. But there is One who has made and continues to make greater change in the lives of billions of people. Christ, by His life, death and resurrection transforms people in this life, and that which is to come. John in his gospel wrote, “… as many as received Him, (Christ) to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name…” Paul described the change which occurs when we take that step, writing,” If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away …all things have become new.” This change is available to all.

Olympic Champion Stands up For Jesus April 3, 2017

“Turning my life over to God was a difficult thing because it meant that I had to give Him control of my life.” Those are the words of Canadian Olympic Champion Speed Skater and now broadcaster Catriona Le May Doan. She held the world record in the 500 meter speed skating event for ten years, and was the first woman to break the thirty -eight second 500 meter barrier. LeMay Doan adds, “I learned that life is better when I give everything to God. It’s my relationship with Jesus that gives me true significance.” This remarkable young woman is living proof of Jesus’ promise when He said, “I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” Paul the Apostle added, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.

The Greatest Weight Ever Lifted March 31, 2017

On the evening of July 28, 1993, at the Bridgewater Nova Scotia Exhibition, Gregg Ernst lifted two Ford cars – a verified lift of 2422 kilograms, or 5340 pounds. That is more than anyone else has lifted. In doing so, Ernst shattered the previous record held by French Canadian Louis Cyr, set in 1896, by more than 450 kilograms. Ernst is credited by Guinness World Records with ‘The Greatest Weight Ever Lifted’ by a human. An evangelical Christian, and Christ follower, Ernst would be quick to acknowledge that despite his amazing feats of strength, there is Someone who has lifted more. That is Jesus Christ, who lifts the burden, guilt and despair from those who humbly seek Him. Of this Saviour, the Bible says, “Who His own self bore our sins in His body on the tree.” He will lift anyone’s burden, but we must ask Him.

The Real Heroes and Heroines March 29, 2017

“Wouldn’t you like to touch me? I just shook hands with a movie star,” the clerk blurted out. Mentioning his name, she continued, “He passed through this very line a few minutes ago,” What a mixed-up world we live in. People get all excited because they have touched a movie star, while all around us are men and women who have fought for their country, brave fireman and police officers, many bearing the very marks of their bravery in their bodies. Sadly, too often they are un-noticed and ignored. But the greatest hero of all time is the Lord Jesus Christ. In eternity past, Jesus, seeing into the future and the reality of our fallen race, may have said to the Father, “I will go.” Later Paul was inspired to write, “When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His son…to redeem.” The rest is history.

Indebtedness March 27, 2017

In December 2016, the Bank of Canada reported that on a national basis, household indebtedness in Canada has continued to rise. The report said that the national ratio of debt to disposable income is approaching 170 per cent. And Chris Lockner in an article about indebtedness wrote, “It’s never too soon to learn the value of a dollar.” As important as it is for all of us to learn how to budget our money properly, we need to be even more mindful that it is never to soon to realize the value of our soul. Jesus Himself said, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul.” However successful we may be, we can never buy eternal life. Paul made that clear when he wrote, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” What a gift!

The Homeless March 24, 2017

The Canadian Press reported last year that thirty-five thousand people are homeless on a given night in Canada, and that there are two hundred and thirty-five thousand Canadians who are homeless annually. Sadly, all around us we see the homeless, addicted, broken and those in despair. Matthew, in his gospel wrote of Jesus our Saviour as follows: “…when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered like sheep having no shepherd.” If your life today lies in ruins around you, please be assured that Jesus understands and loves you. A gospel song says it so well, “No one understands like Jesus. He’s a friend beyond compare. Meet Him at the throne of mercy, He is waiting for you there. “In other words, if our hearts are broken, if we see nothing but troubles ahead, we can reach out to Jesus. He’s reaching out to all.

The Old Lamplighter March 22, 2017

Robert Louis Stevenson was a 19th century novelist who wrote Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One night, as a boy, Stevenson watched darkness envelope the city, his nurse urged him to sit down, because he could not see anything outside. Robert replied, “I can see something wonderful. A man is coming down the street making holes in the darkness.” He was referring to a lamplighter whose job was to light street lights in his day. Wise Solomon wrote, “the way of the wicked is like deep darkness. True, but how wonderful to also learn that Jesus later wrote, “I am the light of the world. He that follows me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.” When we enter into a personal relationship with Christ, He makes holes in our darkness.

Forgiveness for Indiscretions March 20, 2017

The advice column contained a letter from a woman describing her serious moral indiscretions during her college days, which involved incriminating pictures of her. She was worried that with today’s technology, the pictures could be anywhere. The letter ended with a warning to others, to think before they do something that could follow them all their lives. Sad, but true. The good news is that when we admit our wrong doing, and confess it to the Lord, while there may be unpleasant implications that result, there is forgiveness. David, who had his own discretions, cried out to God, “I acknowledged my sin to you and I did not cover my iniquity …and you forgave…” If you are troubled by past or present indiscretions, turn to the Lord. He will forgive. No matter what we have done, God loves us so much, He will forgive.
