Captain Kirk Goes to Space November 19

90 year old William Shatner, famously known as Captain Kirk from Star Trek, became the oldest person to go into space last month. He went on the invitation of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and one of the richest men in the world. The 90 year old tweeted, “It’s never too late to experience new things.” In the Bible, Jesus speaks of an experience that is made available that is of infinite worth but he limits this experience not to the rich and famous but the poor. Those who are poor in Spirit. Jesus says in Matthew 5:3 blessed are the poor in spirt, for there is the kingdom of heaven. Poor in Spirit are those who recognize their destitute, spiritual condition. It speaks of someone who recognizes their need of salvation made possible through Jesus Christ and they trust in Him to satisfy that need.

Finding a Diamond the Size of a Jellybean November 17

Last month Noreen Wredberg was not expecting to find anything at Arkansas Crater of Diamonds State park but she did. A yellow diamond weighing 4.38 carats. The diamond is about the size of a jellybean and according to the park rules she is allowed to keep it. She found a real treasure that is worth a lot of money. In the Bible, Jesus shares about a treasure that is found that is of great worth. He tells of a man who found a treasure in a field and then went and sold all that he had to buy the field so he could have the treasure. The treasure represents the kingdom of heaven that is of infinite worth beyond what we can fully comprehend but we can possess it. The way to receive it is through Jesus! He said in John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me.

A Lot for Nothing November 15

Last month an exhibition about the future of labor opened at a Danish art museum. There was one exhibit that gained a lot of attention and it was not for the beauty of the art but rather the absence of it. The artist decided, to the dismay of the exhibition, to take a payment of $84000 US dollars in order to hang two empty frames and call them conceptual pieces. It ended up being a lot for nothing. Did you know some people view salvation as pictured in the bible as a lot for nothing? Experiencing a more abundant life now and the assurance of heaven in the future all at no cost. The reality is this could not be further from the truth. Salvation is a gift but it came at a great cost to the given. 2 Corinthians 5:21 reads, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Whom Do You Identify With November 12

I grew up on Prince Edward Island but had moved away for a number of years. When we returned to the Island my son, who was in jr. high at the time, started at his new school. One of the teachers at the school he was attending had been a classmate of mine a number of years ago. When this particular teacher saw my son she knew we must of returned back to PEI. What made her aware that this student was my son was the way he walked which was the way she remembered I walked. There are certain things we do that identify us with others. Jesus identifies a particular quality of someone whom we do not want to be identified with. On one particular day he is rebuking the religious leaders and references a particular individual, the devil, and goes on to say, “When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

Rescued Miners November 10

It was thrilling to hear of the 39 miners rescued just over a month ago from Totten Mine near Sudbury. The miners were stuck for two days due to an elevator being damaged and not being able to carry the miners out. The miners had to climb a series of ladders, some as far down as 1200 meters with the aid of rescue mine workers. Some miners not able to complete the climb had to be hoisted out with ropes. Can you imagine the joy of being rescued from being as deep as 1200 meters below the surface? Did you know there is a rescue shared about in the Bible that is absolutely amazing and is available to all? John 3:16 reads, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

The Two Michael’s Return November 8

It was a time of celebration all throughout Canada as the infamous “two Michaels” returned home after spending more than a thousand days imprisoned in China. So much time of anticipating finally coming to an end. What an amazing reunion it would have been for them to be reunited with their families. I trust since being home after just over a month they still cannot believe it! It is quite a thing to ponder but for those who have placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation there is an amazing reunion that awaits. Jesus says in John 14:3, “And I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself…” I trust after being in the presence of Jesus a person will spend eternity trying to grasp the reality of what has actually taken place.

Undisputable Nutritional Fact November 5

Many years ago Socrates said, “Thou shouldest eat to live, not live to eat.” Socrates was pointing out that the most important aspect of food is ultimately the nutrition it provides. Did you know the Bible points out nutritional advice in relation to reading it? 1 Peter 2:2 reads, “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”. The spiritual nutritional fact pointed out here is a Bible does not benefit a person unless the person reads it. It is like buying a jug a milk and putting it in your fridge. It is of absolutely no nutritional value to you personally, unless you take that milk out of the fridge and drink it. A Bible only benefits you if you read it.

Are You Self-Sufficient November 3

I read an article recently entitled, 50 ways to become more self-sufficient. There were literally 50 tips presented to make a person more self-sufficient. Some of the tips were very doable and some not so doable. Being self-sufficient can be a very good thing, but not always. Some people think being self-sufficient, in relation to God, is a good thing. It is the idea of striving to be a good person, or at least better than other people, and the thought is by striving to be good that will make them right with God. The bible tells us for someone who is in relationship with God, being self-sufficient was not the way they got there. Ephesians 2:8-9 reads, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Financial Planning November 1

In an article put out recently by IE/Investment Executive the results of a survey were given in which it was revealed that the three most prominent topics addressed between an investor and their advisor are retirement planning, overall health and well being, and inheritance planning. I want to share with you a financial plan from the Bible in which a man named Agur shares his financial concerns in the form of a prayer. Proverbs 30: 7-9 reads, “Two things I request of You (Deprive me not before I die): Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches— Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the LORD?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.

DIY-ers Don’t Always Benefit October 29

CTV news published an article recently entitled, “DIY-ers benefit from lower price in aftermath of lumber price correction.” This past May lumber prices hit more than three times the pre-pandemic levels. Thankfully for DIY-ers lumber prices are now settling back at pre-pandemic levels. Those whom can do it themselves can now not only benefit from not having to pay for labour but also from lower prices than this previous May. It is interesting because sometimes doing something yourself is beneficial and sometimes not. In the Bible it is made clear that in relation to salvation it is not beneficial. In the book of Ephesians it reads, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boas
