Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Faith May 29, 2020

Ralph Waldo Emerson was a brilliant American poet, philosopher and essayist. He attended the Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard University. Although the death of his nineteen-year- old wife caused a crisis in his faith, he later wrote, “All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.” Emerson’s strong faith is a testimonial to the fact that faith in God need not be limited to the uneducated, or those of average intelligence. Many are convinced that faith in the Bible as the inspired Word of God and trust in Christ is only for the elderly and superstitious. But the testimony of brilliant thoughtful people like Ralph Waldo Emerson should cause honest people to reconsider this kind of thinking. Timothy, in the New Testament reminds us that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…

Our pleasure mad World May 27, 2020

King Solomon wrote “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired, I refused no pleasure. I amassed silver and gold.” Perhaps part of mankind’s craving for pleasure is based on desire for distractions from the terrible things that are happening around us. Solomon’s tastes were extravagant, his appetites unrestrained, yet he found them meaningless. Then, when he looked to God, he learned that only turning from evil and living a God honouring life brought fulfillment and happiness. Pleasure, money or material achievements do not bring true happiness. As with Solomon, only through a proper relationship with God through faith in Christ can this be found. Jesus said that He came into this world that we might have “life and have it more abundantly.” Only He can satisfy the longings of our hearts.

Failing to look Ahead May 25, 2020

“Most people tend to avoid looking ahead to the end of their days.” those words were part of a newspaper commentary giving suggestions for making out one’s will. It is common to neglect making important decisions regarding the future. It’s as though we think we will always be healthy and sickness only happens to others. Many have the philosophy, “Why think of tomorrow, just live for today.” But there is a tomorrow to prepare for. Am I ready for the next life? Are you? If not, here is good advice which was seen on a grave stone in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia- “Prepare to meet thy God.” To be prepared, we need to become properly related to God through faith in His Son. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Security Blanket May 22, 2020

Linus, the character in the comic strip Peanuts, always had his security blanket. With security in mind, somebody wrote, “I pulled my blanket around my shoulders and snuggled in the warmth of my family, my job my good health, my financial security. But …suddenly my blanket was ripped from my grasp and I stood exposed in all my fears. Then I looked up to the Son of God, Who said, “My peace I give to you, don’t be troubled or afraid.” I was warm.” Is this your situation today? Lost your job? Your health or that of a loved one has taken a turn for the worse? Security blanket ripped away? The only way to have true security is to become properly related to the One Who holds all our tomorrows in His hand. His name is Jesus Christ, God’s Son. He never changes. He is “the same, yesterday, today and forever.”

Message in a Bottle May 20, 2020

A fisherman pulled an old bottle out of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. Inside was a scribbled message on a postcard, asking the finder to return it to the writer’s home address in Berlin. The bottle had been tossed in the sea in Germany in 1913. It is believed to be the world’s oldest ever found. Researchers were able to track down the writer’s sixty-two-year-old granddaughter, Angela Erdmann, who lives in Berlin. Erdmann said with tears, “That was a pretty moving moment.” And it is a very moving moment when we hear about the message that God delivered to the world over two thousand years ago. The message was “… God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Forgiveness and eternal life are available to all.

Two sides to Facebook May 18, 2020

Facebook is an online social media service. It is very popular, and millions use it every day to connect with others. But there is a downside. Privacy is significantly threatened, not just for Facebook clients, but everyone Facebook has identified, even once in an uploaded photo. We can remove the tags, delete the photos, even the Facebook account. But the permanent record is there. You cannot hide from Facebook. You cannot hide from God either. The all-seeing all-knowing God keeps our records. That can be scary, since, as sinners, we all have things to hide. But there’s good news. Our loving heavenly Father is willing to delete all wrong-doing from His records. He inspired John to write, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” And when God forgives, He forgets.

Leaving it all Behind May 15, 2020

Often, we hear of “estate sales.” Everything is for sale, including furniture, china, toys, tools and much more. They represent a lifetime of “stuff.” A person who stopped at one recently wondered what had happened. Was it financial loss, moving away, divorce, or death? “Timothy, writing in the New Testament, reminded us, “… we brought nothing into the world, and neither can we carry anything out.” Jesus asked rhetorically, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his own soul?” How important it is to keep our priorities right. This life is temporal and preparation for eternity is much more important than earthly possessions. The prophet Amos gave us all wise advice, when he urged, “prepare to meet your God.” That happens only when we have Christ in our lives.

The Deluded Archer May 13, 2020

I read recently about a man who prided himself on being an expert archer. However, his secret has come to light. He shot his arrows at the side of a barn and afterwards painted a bull’s eye around them. Many of us are just like that poor deluded man. We create a god of our own liking and then convince ourselves that he is real. Fortunately, the Bible provides the true picture of God. The Psalmist wrote, “…the Lord most high is awesome. He is the great King of Kings over all the earth…God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne…He is greatly exalted.” And it is before this holy, powerful, all knowing God that we will all, one day stand. The Apostle Paul affirmed this, writing, “…each of us shall give account of himself to God…” When we do, we will need Jesus to stand beside us, as our Advocate.

Help to Quit Smoking May 11, 2020

“When you’re ready to quit, we’re ready to help.” Those words, meant to encourage people to quit smoking, were seen on a vehicle recently. Research has shown that withdrawal symptoms decrease more sharply for those who quit smoking cold turkey, than those who try to cut back gradually. Similarly, many attempt to gradually become Christians. But becoming a Christian is instantaneous, because the moment we sincerely admit our fallen nature and spiritual need, asking Christ’s forgiveness, He responds immediately. He doesn’t need time to think about it. He has already made provision for this, by sending Jesus to the cross. John was inspired to write in the New Testament, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Saved By a Shadow May 8, 2020

A swimming instructor was spared serious injury or death when he saw a shadow. He said, “One night I could not sleep, so I decided to have a swim, hoping this would relax me. I didn’t put the lights on in the gym, for I knew every inch of the place. The moon was shining brightly and I could see my body clearly outlined on the opposite wall.” As he raised his arms for the dive, his shadow made a perfect silhouette of a cross. He was not a Christian, but thought of the words of an old hymn, ‘He died that I might be forgiven…’ For some reason, he did not dive. Walking into the pool, he was shocked to find it empty. Unknown to him, the caretaker had drained it. A dive would have probably killed him. Later he said, “I knelt in gratitude and asked the Christ of the cross to save my soul.” The Bible says, “…Christ died for us.”
