Sir James Simpson from Edinburgh, discovered the anaesthetic qualities of chloroform and obstetric anaesthesia. He opened the door to medical operations which were previously impossible. A bust of him was raised in St Andrew’s chapel with the words: “To whose genius and benevolence, the world owes the blessings derived from the use of chloroform for the relief of suffering”. He was a sincere Christian. Once he was asked, “Sir, what do you consider your greatest discovery?” He replied, “My greatest discovery was when I discovered I was a sinner in the sight of God.” He was then asked, “And now would you please tell me your second greatest discovery.” Simpson replied, ‘My second greatest discovery was when I discovered that Jesus died for a sinner like me.’” The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.”
