Change affects every area of our lives. For instance, at the turn of the last century, 90 per cent of all doctors had no college education. Now our physicians are highly educated. At the turn of the century in North America, the leading causes of death were pneumonia, influenza, tuberculosis and diarrhoea. Now heart disease and cancer top the list. Francis Lyte, in his famous hymn “Abide with Me, wrote” “Change and Decay in all around I see.” But wisely he added, “O Thou who changest not, abide with me.” He was reminding us that in this world of change, there is One who never changes. The New Testament informs us that Jesus Christ is “… the same, yesterday, and today and forever.” He promises believers, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Truly, “With Christ in the vessel we can smile at the storms.”
