According to available records and information from elderly relatives, at the beginning of the last century, sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Although costs have greatly increased since then, there are two major items in our lives for which the cost has never changed. Paul explained the cost of a life lived without God, writing, “The wages of sin is death.” He referred not only to physical death but also spiritual death, eternal separation from our Maker. Avoiding spiritual death is free for those who face up to the reality of their fallen spiritual nature and make their peace with God, seeking forgiveness and cleansing from Him. In addition to Paul’s inspired words about the wages of a sinful life, happily, he added, “…but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
