“The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” by historian Edward Gibbon was written from 1776 to 1788. It is one of the greatest and most influential books in the English language, still relevant and insightful today. Gibbon listed five reasons why the Roman Empire fell: 1-Rapid increase of divorce and undermining of the sanctity of the home. 2: Imposition of higher taxes. 3: the Mad craze for pleasure. 4: Building huge armaments, and 5: Decay of faith and turning to a mere form of religion. All five of these conditions characterize our society today. If history repeats itself, these are sobering warnings for the future. Wise King Solomon wrote in Proverbs, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” The Psalmist wrote, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Please, pray for our leaders, reminding them of these lessons from history.
