Living by Your Own Rules October 19, 2016

I read recently of a police officer in a small town who noticed a number of bull’s eyes painted here and there. In the middle of each was a bullet hole. Learning the identity of the shooter, the officer met him and commented on his amazing ability, saying, “It must have taken hours of practice to accomplish such a feat.” But the young man responded, “No, actually it was quite easy. I shoot first, then draw the circle.” Many practice this intellectual dishonesty when carrying out unacceptable actions, like dishonesty, immorality or unfaithfulness to a spouse. They “draw the circle” and refer to their actions as “preferences” or “the way I see it,” or “everyone’s doing it.” But it won’t work with God. The Bible still says, “ Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” .

Poor Handwriting October 17, 2016

Businesses in North America are losing more than 100 million dollars a year because of illegible handwriting. These include poorly written orders, scribbled messages, and undecipherable entries. But God speaks very clearly when communicating with us about this life and the next. For example, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Fortunately, God also speaks clearly when giving us good news. For example, “Christ died for our sins” and “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.” And you can’t get much plainer than the invitation God extends to us all when He says, “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Will Rogers, the American comedian and actor, spoke for many when He said, “My trouble with the Bible is not the parts I don’t understand, but the parts I do.!” .

Unsatisfied Longings October 14, 2016

Many do not listen to the news anymore; it is so bad. Multitudes realize that posh homes, super jobs, or expensive toys just don’t cut it. They wonder why they are here, and feel that life is meaningless. When young, they dreamed, but as they grow older, they realized they had no anchor. But millions have found that the unsatisfied longings of the human heart can be satisfied by Jesus Christ. An old hymn asks “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?” It answers, “We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love. That Rock is Jesus Christ. He invites, “come to me, all who labour and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.” Do you have an anchor?

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made October 12, 2016

Dr. David Jeremiah, in his book Sanctuary reminds us, “in every cell of your body, there is enough information to recreate your adult person as if no other cells were necessary.” …If the DNA instruction of one cell were written out, it would take one thousand hundred page books to put all the information down. And yet God put this all in a cell…” Our bodies are truly amazing. So with King David of old, we should all pray, “Search me O God and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” Truly, “we are fearfully and wonderfully made”. We will all some day be accountable to our Designer, of Whom John wrote, “and this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” .

The Amazing Pearl October 10, 2016

An unidentified Philippine fisherman has found a seventy-five-pound pearl that could be the largest ever found in the world, and five times larger than the previous record. Not knowing it could be worth tens of millions of dollars, he kept the pearl hidden as a good-luck charm, for ten years. If the story is true, it is amazing and pictures ” the Pearl of Great Price”, in one of Jesus’ parables. In it, Jesus compares our journey to heaven to a search for fine pearls, conducted by a merchant, “who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had”, to acquire the pearl. The parable encourages us to turn from anything keeping us from receiving Jesus, the ultimate pearl of great price, and the gift of eternal life which He made possible by dying at Calvary for us. .

At Her Own Funeral October 7, 2016

“Experiencing death has made me appreciate life more keenly.” Those are the words of twenty-two-year-old Zeng Jia,(Zen Ja) a student from Wuhan, China. She had just spent a lot of money to stage her own funeral. After lying in state for an hour, she got up and joined her own wake. Her bizarre act serves to remind us that, as our Bible teaches, “it is appointed to man …to die.” Jesus, speaking of physical death and eternal life said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die…” This young woman knew that she, and all of us, are going to leave this world someday. It is important to invite Christ into our lives, and accept His gift of eternal life. He invites, “if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” .

Immortal October 5, 2016

“Someone said …that if I win these three gold medals, I will be immortal. And I kind of liked it. So I’m going to run with that: immortal.” Those were the words of famous Jamaican racer Usain Bold, after he had won three gold medals at the recent 2016 Olympics. But he is not the only person who is immortal. The Bible tells us that we are all immortal. Jesus said “…the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear (God’s) voice and come forth–those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. “The Apostle Paul wrote “… this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. We are all going to live somewhere forever. We need Jesus to prepare us for the journey. .

When God Forgets October 3, 2016

I read recently about three elderly sisters, aged 96, 94 and 92, who lived together. One day the 96-year-old stepped into the bathtub, stopped, and wondered if she was getting in or out. Meanwhile the 94-year-old was halfway up the stairs and stopped, trying to remember if she was going up or down. So she called down to her 92-year-old sister in the kitchen. The young sister, pleased that she wasn’t forgetful like her sisters, laughed and pounded on the table, then answered, “Just a minute, somebody’s at the door.” Researchers in the USA believe that normal memory loss may one day be treated with drugs. Did you know that God forgets too? When we sincerely acknowledge our wrong-doing, He forgives and forgets. “I, even I am He who blots out your transgressions … and I will not remember your sins.” .

Cyber-Bullying September 30, 2016

Cyber-bullying has become a household word almost over night. Have we opened a pandora’s box? Intimate damaging photos posted on the internet have led to a rash of tragic, unnecessary suicides of young people. Present day technology is available to a society that largely rejects the idea of a personal God to whom we are accountable. And we are reaping what we sow. Paul warned in the New Testament, “Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Think this is narrow-minded hysteria? Please wake up and look around you at what is going on in our world. But it is not too late! God is not dead. He’s alive and invites us to turn away from a godless lifestyle. Although this is a fallen world, God loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die for us

Change! September 29, 2016

It’s something almost everyone knows. We live in an ever changing world. One example of this is Canada Post and the use of postal services. Several factors are in play: a dramatic decline in mail volume, e-commerce which boosts demand for parcel delivery, less letters, electronic bills, and advertising moving to the Internet. Clearly, we face change in every facet of life. Many are asking “Does everything have to change?” “Is there any hope for stability?” The answer is a resounding “yes! There is hope.” God does not change. He said, “I am the Lord, I change not”. Jesus does not change, He is “the same, yesterday and today and forever.” And the way to become God’s child, to become a Christian has not changed. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” It has always been that way.
