Time Magazine and the Bible December 16, 2019

An article in Time magazine should be of interest to anyone wondering if the Bible is trustworthy. Here is an excerpt. “Over the past 200 years, the Bible has been subjected to the most rigorous examination of any book in history. It has been looked at archaeologically, historically, and critically. Not only has the Bible withstood the test, but it has emerged better for all the fracas. And Nelson Gueck, an American academic and archaeologist has written.” It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.” We can take the Bible seriously when it claims, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable.” Millions can testify that when they believed and followed instructions in the Bible, their lives were transformed.

Something Important Missing December 13, 2019

Thieves in Marlborough New Zealand tried to steal a car. But it wouldn’t start. Unknown to them, its engine had been removed for repairs. There was no connection, so there could be no action. More importantly, our lives need to be properly connected to God to receive His forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. John the disciple wrote in his letter, “These things I have written to you, who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life…” in order to have that assurance, we need a proper connection to God. His Word tells us plainly, “He who has the Son has life, and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” If our connection to God is merely connection to religion, we have a serious problem, because Jesus said, ” I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. “

Her world fell Apart December 11, 2019

A little girl gave her mother pieces of hardened clay and said, “Mummy, my world fell apart.” The amused mother realized that her child had made a globe of clay, so she taped it together. “But Mummy, the child said, “It still has a hole and cracks in it.” Often, when our world falls apart, as a result of illness, death of a loved one or financial ruin, we too attempt to “tape it together” again. But the cracks and holes in our lives are still with us. Only God can fix our world. We can pray with King David when he was at the end of his rope, “Hear my cry, O God…from the end of t he earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” That Rock is Christ. He helped the Psalmist, and if our hearts are shattered and broken, we ,too, can cry out to the Rock of Ages, the dear Lord Jesus.

The Origin of the Universe December 9, 2019

All the wonders of the world around us are accidental. A thousand billion stars made themselves. The earth magnetized itself. The top few inches of land just happens to have topsoil, without which we would have no vegetables to eat, no grass for animals, whose meat is our food. That is correct. Some think our universe is just one big evolutionary accident. They think we are all animals, with no accountability to God. The Psalmist spoke rather bluntly when he wrote, “…the fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” Only blind, unsubstantiated faith could possibly believe it all just happened by itself, without an intelligent designer. But through the ages, intelligent, godly people have wisely believed the first verse in the Bible, when it says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. “

Totally Amazed December 6, 2019

“Astounding!” That’s how York University professor Bridget Stutchurby described a tiny bird, the Blackpoll Warbler. Recent studies have proven that the 12-gram bird can complete a non-stop migration over open water for a distance of 2700 kilometers. “We were totally amazed when we found out,” said Ryan Norris, a Biologist at the University of Guelph. Job exclaimed, “How great is God? Beyond our understanding.” But we don’t have to understand it to embrace our Creator’s love and kindness. Paul described the greatness of God, exemplified in the gospel, calling it “the power of God to salvation, to everyone who believes…” Later he explained why and how this is possible, with the words, “…God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” No wonder so many love to sing, “How great Thou art.”

A Caricature of Civilization December 4, 2019

The late brilliant Journalist Sydney J Harris wrote, “It is man’s singular fate to know that he is an incomplete creature, a kind of monster and angel, joined together, with the monster forever betraying the angel.” In view of the terrible moral and spiritual condition of our world today, his words are sadly appropriate for our times. Our Creator prepared this beautiful world for us and planted Adam and Eve in the pristine Garden of Eden. They rebelled and all humans since have followed in their footsteps. Describing this, Paul the Apostle wrote, “Just as through one man, sin entered the world and death through sin, thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.” But though we are incomplete, as Harris suggests, Christ’s love, shown at Calvary, provides completeness. He promised, “I have come that they (referring to all mankind) may have life… more abundantly.”

Gratitude December 2, 2019

Last month, on November 11, we observed Remembrance Day. It is a time when we express our thanks for the men who served in battle or gave their lives to keep our world free. When we see the military men and women returning home, to be reunited with their families, we rejoice, but many sadly gave their lives for the great cause of freedom. A greater liberation however, occurred when Christ gave His life on the Cross at Calvary, to redeem mankind. His sacrifice made it possible for all to be set free. John, in his gospel wrote, “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” Many sincere people wonder if there’s hope for them, in spite of the sinful way they have lived. An old hymn gives the answer- “There’s room at the cross for you, though millions have come, there is still room for one, yes, there’s room at the cross for you.”

A Gift Certificate from God November 29, 2019

As November ends, many people are already thinking of Christmas and gift giving. Giving gift certificates has become increasingly popular. If you receive a gift certificate you can go to a designated store and receive merchandise free. The price has already been paid. In the same way, we can all receive a gift certificate from God. The Bible clearly states, “All have sinned.” But it also clearly states “Christ died for our sins.” Because of that wonderful act of love, God offers a gift certificate to all. If activated, the result is forgiveness of sin and eternal life. The price has already been paid. John, in his gospel explained it as follows— “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made November 27, 2019

Dr. A.C. Guyton, one-time head of the Medical School of the University of Mississippi, made the following remarkable statement— “The human body is the most beautifully engineered and most complicated system there is. It works by means of several hundred patterns of control, each affecting the other. The brain has ten billion nerve cells to record what you learn. The information travels inside you at speeds of up to three hundred miles per hour over a network of nerves and fibers, one hundred miles long. No wonder the Psalmist David was inspired to write “I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” But he also acknowledged that he was responsible to his Maker, praying, “Search me O God … and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” God holds us responsible for what we do with our wonderful bodies.

The New Glasgow Bell November 25, 2019

In 1901 the town of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia installed a massive bell in the Post Office tower. For fifty years it was used to announce fires. Its clapper has now been removed, the bell no longer rings, and is kept as an historic artifact. The Bible too sounds out its bell-like message of warning and hope. Many have tried unsuccessfully to silence it. But still, in 2019, God’s Word sounds forth the truth that “all have sinned”. We are unable to forgive or prepare ourselves for heaven. That’s because it is “by grace we are saved through saved and not of ourselves.” And it loudly proclaims that there is “No other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” If we are wise, we will heed God’s warning bell, the Bible. And if we sincerely and humbly respond to His love, He will come into our lives and rescue us.
