New kind of Man January 3, 2020

Walter Lippmann, an American Pulitzer Prize winner, has been called “the most influential journalist of the 20th century. “He once. Said “We ourselves were so sure that at long last the generation had arisen…to put this disorderly earth to right…and look what we have made of it. What is required is a new kind of man.” The Bible sums up the problem as human depravity, telling us “there is none righteous, no not one.” Jesus explained that because of this fallen human nature, we all need to be “born again.” Thankfully, God promises “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you…I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes…” That is God’s “new kind of man “ that is needed, one who has been spiritually reborn.

Christianity in China January 2, 2020

Christianity is growing so rapidly in Communist China that in recent years concerned authorities in the province of Zhejiang have toppled crosses from more than 400 churches. But though the symbol may be destroyed, the message can never be. The hymn the Old Rugged Cross, tells the story of the cross like few other hymns. Its words catch the essence of Jesus’ death for us all. “On a hill far away, stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame; and I love that old cross where the dearest and best, for a world of lost sinners was slain.” It is based on the truth found in the gospel of John chapter three, verse sixteen. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The message of the cross is changing lives here and everywhere in the world, including China.

Refuge for Refugees January 1, 2020

A well-known disc jockey working in a popular Halifax radio station told me that he does not watch the news anymore because it is so bad. As we enter 2020, many share his view. Our world is filled with natural disasters, strife in the Middle East, the USA and the U.K. Millions flee as refugees, seeking asylum in safer countries. The dictionary defines “refugee” as “one who flees in search of refuge”. They seek protection and a safe haven. But though, we suffer tragedies, loneliness and disappointment, there is a wonderful refuge. Millions draw comfort from the following Bible promise: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” God takes care of those properly related to Christ by faith, in life or death.

New Year’s Resolutions December 31, 2019

As the new year approaches, many of us resolve to turn over new leaves. Time Magazine has given a list of top commonly made and broken resolutions. Here are a few. Lose weight, quit smoking, eat a healthier diet, get out of debt, drink less alcohol. Unfortunately, only around 8% of those resolutions are kept. So it is tempting to just stop making any more. A university president once said, “You can do anything you ought to do.” And Paul the Apostle, writing in the New Testament, agreed. Speaking as a Christian believer, he wrote, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” He further explained, writing, “If anyone is in Christ, he (or she) is a new creation. Old things have passed away, behold all things have become new. In 2020, with Christ in control of our lives, we will be able to keep our well thought out and reasonable resolutions

New and Old December 30, 2019

It will soon be 2020. Many will try new skills, new styles, new places to travel. In a fascinating publication called “Old Things,” the author speaks of old shoes that are more comfortable than new ones, and noted old truths which have produced guidance and comfort. Unfortunately, many want to replace all that is old. Some even want to get rid of the old, old story of Jesus and His love, and replace it with their own ideas. These new ideas include such myths as “there is no God,” and “as long as I am sincere, it does not matter what I believe.” But the Bible answers, “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God,” and it informs us that it is “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to God’s mercy He saves us.” As we enter 2020, let’s not abandon the old life-changing truths found in God’s Word.

A World Without Jesus December 27, 2019

A young boy read a bedtime story with his father, describing what our world would be like if Jesus had not come? On Christmas morning, the boy found no Christmas decorations in his home or on the home of his neighbours. Though it was Christmas day, all the stores were open. Saddened, he ran home and picking up his Bible, saw that the New Testament was missing. Then he awoke and joyfully realized that he had been dreaming. He prayed, “Oh dear Lord Jesus, I am so glad that you did come to earth.” A world without Christ is a sobering thought. How good that the angel’s announcement to the shepherds that first Christmas was, “…behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For there is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour Who is Christ the Lord.” Merry Christmas!

A Special Christmas Day December 25, 2019

It is Christmas, 2019

. Here is an amazing but true story of a Christmas which took place many years ago. It was told to me by Sylvia, now in her nineties, who lives near Delta B.C. Her father, John Richard Jepson was serving on a battlefield on Christmas Eve 1914, in the First World War. As darkness fell, some German troops started singing Christmas carols. Across the battle lines, British soldiers applauded and called out greetings. The next day, Christmas, all firing stopped for a while. German French and British troops met to shake hands and share food. It became known as “The Christmas truce.” Truly amazing! And Jesus still offers Himself to all as the “Prince of Peace.” That is because at Calvary, His death in our place made peace possible between a Holy God and sinful man. Now all can receive the greatest gift ever offered- “peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The greatest Gift December 23, 2019

A young boy grew up in in a modest Nova Scotia home. He loved hockey and played it at every opportunity. But hockey sticks were very expensive, so he always had to borrow used ones from others. Then one year, in his mid teens, to his delight, he received a brand-new hockey stick from his parents. His Dad paid one dollar and ten cents for it. The boy thought it was the greatest gift he had ever received. But when he was seventeen years old, he received another, much more valuable gift, when someone showed him from the Bible that “the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” He learned that it is “by grace we are saved through faith, and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works…” He received that gift, and realized it was the greatest he had ever been given. That wonderful gift is available to everyone. I know, because I was that boy.

Christmas without Christ December 20, 2019

Great efforts are being made these days, to take Christ out of Christmas. Because of so-called “political correctness,” many schools no longer mention the Bethlehem Baby- Jesus. The old Christmas carols are never, or seldom sung in public places and the greeting “Merry Christmas” is often replaced with “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings.” Commercialism may be supplanting Christmas, but the truth of Christmas can never be erased. The angels’ message is still as much needed today as it was at the first Christmas, because we are just as much in need of a Saviour as people were then…we are sill sinners. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Matthew, in his gospel, wrote, “And she (Mary) shall being forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.”

Christmas Gift Ideas December 18, 2019

What? You don’t have all your Christmas gifts purchased? What to give to the person who seems to have everything? Dr. Charles Swindoll, in his book “Seasons of Life” has a few ideas. Among them: Encourage an older person. Release a grudge. Share a smile. Find the time to keep a promise you have made. Forgive an enemy. Offer to babysit for a tired mother. Turn the television off and talk to someone. Seek out a forgotten friend. Gladden the heart of some child. Yes, Christmas is a time for giving. God set the great example. We read, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes on Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Jesus is God’s Christmas gift to all who are willing to receive Christ into their lives, while recognizing their spiritual bankruptcy and need of His forgiveness.
