Research from the University of California at Berkley suggests that listening to sad music provides comfort for broken hearts. Researchers discovered that people find comfort in tunes that reflect negative moods. Perhaps you are experiencing sadness today. An old hymn reminds us that God “understands our sorrows. He sees the falling tear.” Jesus is described in the Bible as “…a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief,” and One who has “borne our griefs and carried our sorrows”. Jesus invites “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” When darkness comes, and we are hurting, “He gives us songs in the night.” Peter invites us to be “casting all your cares upon Him.”

John Newton sank so low that at one point he became a slave trader. But in 1748 a violent storm off the coast of Ireland battered his vessel so severely, that he called out to the Lord Jesus for forgiveness and became a new person. His story reminds us that “The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” and that it is “by grace we are saved through faith, and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God not by works…” To describe his conversion, on New Year’s Day in 1773, Newton penned the words to the now famous hymn “Amazing Grace.” Its words declare that forgiveness of the worst sins, is possible, through the mercy of God. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.”

The words “Save our soil” were seen on a bumper sticker on the car in front of us. There is much legitimate concern about environmental pollution, which deserves our response. But there is a greater danger: moral pollution. Every day 2.5 billion emails containing pornography are sent or received. Every day 68 million search queries are related to pornography and every day 25% of total searches generated concern pornography. No wonder there are so many sexual assaults and broken homes being reported. Our hurting world has embraced this moral pollution. It is time to pray “save our souls”. Jesus warns, “Unless you repent, you will likewise perish”. But our Saviour invites “Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Between January 2016 and September 2018, over 10,000 Canadians died as a result of opioid-related overdose. More than 16% of Canadians are heavy drinkers. Nine babies in every 1,000 are born with fetal alcohol syndrome. Why? Most addicts are craving peace and satisfaction in the wrong places. Augustine of old gave us insight when he wrote “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” God intentionally placed a deep longing in our hearts that He alone can fill. Another of Augustine’s insights gives hope to desperate needy people and reveals a great Bible truth. He wrote, “God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.”

The Oxford Dictionary has added about 500 new entries. Among them are “keener” a student who is excessively eager, “Meh” an interjection used to describe boredom, and “jeggings” a name for stretch leggings styled to resemble jeans. Words like “grass”, “mouse” and “gay” have new meanings. Many ask, “What next?” It’s refreshing to know that the meaning of the words of the most famous of all Bible verses have not changed. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” In this changing world, there is an unchanging Saviour who is “Jesus Christ the same, yesterday and today and forever.” He still welcomes all who need the love He offers

It is the year of elections in Canada. Alberta and PEI voted last month. This month it is Newfoundland’s turn. In October there will be a Federal election. When we vote, we make important choices to the best of our ability. But the greatest decision of all time is that faced by Pontius Pilate, Governor of Judea in the time of Christ. His question was, “What shall I do then with Jesus, who is called the Christ?” Will we choose to believe that He is the Son of God? Or will it be unbelief and rejection and the serving of gods of our own making? The wise will follow Peter’s example when He said to the Saviour, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” On election days, we choose a government, but the choice we make regarding Jesus will determine where we will spend eternity.

John Milton, the great English poet, at the height of his career began to lose his eyesight. As a devout follower of Jesus Christ, he did not become bitter, but accepted his condition. Amazingly, after he became blind, he produced the great epic poem, “Paradise Lost.” Perhaps today, I speak to someone who has just lost a loved one, or had a serious financial setback. Whatever your situation, when we have Christ in our lives, we can be assured that as the old hymn says, “underneath are the everlasting arms.” Our Lord promises “My grace is sufficient; my strength is made perfect in weakness.” The Lord Jesus invites, “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Professor Karl Aquino, of the University of British Columbia, says, “I confess that although I study forgiveness, I do not always understand how people can do it…how they can forgive those who are most undeserving. The common reason is devout people forgive because God would want them to, and non-religious people who are honest with themselves know we are all sinners.” God is the author of forgiveness. The Bible tells us that He is “a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate…abounding in love.” How amazing it is that when an undeserving person sincerely repents and asks for forgiveness of sins, God is “faithful and just to forgive…and to cleanse from all unrighteousness.” Then when we have experienced God’s forgiveness, we can forgive.

Generation Y, also known as the Millennial generation, is comprised of children of baby boomers. Born from the late 1970s, to the early 2000s, they have been called the “me, me, me” generation Because of their perceived materialistic tendencies they have the highest rate of materialism addiction to date. Jesus taught the opposite of self-absorption. He taught self-denial, asking the rhetorical question, “What shall it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” Whatever our generation, we all share one common characteristic. We are all sinners by nature and by choice and we all need Christ to come into our lives, forgive our sins, help us to live useful productive lives, and prepare us for heaven.

A little boy with a reputation for causing havoc, was a patient in a children’s hospital. A visitor, trying to help, told him that if he obeyed the nurses for one week, she would give him a dime. A week later she returned and asked, “Do you deserve the dime?” A small voice said, “Gimme a penny.” Whether this really happened or is just a made-up story, it does illustrate a serious truth. If God were to ask us “Have you obeyed my commandments?” few would even be able to say, “Give me a penny”, because though the word “sin” is not popular these days, most of us are aware that we do sin. The Bible clearly states “The wages of sin is death.” But for the benefit of people who ask Jesus for His mercy, we are told that “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
