Fear March 6, 2019

Your child snuggles close whispering, “I’m afraid.” And who among us has not experienced fear? It may be fear of the dark, or of an animal. You reassure the little one trying to soothe his or her fears. But deep inside you too have felt fear’s chilling impact. There are irrational fears but there is also a healthy fear that causes one to take appropriate action about a problem. Solomon of old wrote, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” If we are not rightly related to God, a healthy fear should lead us to a turning from wrong-doing, and a turning to the Lord Jesus, Who said, “Come unto me…and I will give you rest.”

Sudden Unexpected Storms March 4, 2019

Leah Eichler, writing in the Globe and Mail speaks of the uncertainties of life in her article,“ How I Learned to love Uncertainty.” And many of us, when sudden change hits, are left feeling helpless and insecure. But while we cannot foresee the future and its chaos, we can learn how to react. On one occasion, Jesus and His disciples were caught in a sudden storm on the sea of Galilee. The terrified disciples called out, “Lord save us, we are perishing.” In response, “Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm.” We cannot control the uncertainties of our lives, but we can call out to Jesus, the One who can bring peace in the midst of our storms.

Ready March 1, 2019

Several years ago, a married couple made arrangements for their passing and burial. Their headstone includes their names, dates of birth, marriage, and space for the dates of their passing. Many others take these preparatory steps. But this couple made soul preparation. On the bottom of their tombstone is the word “Redeemed,” indicating that they have heeded the Biblical counsel to “prepare to meet your God.” They are aware that they, like all of us, “have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But thankfully they also know that “Christ died for our sins,” and have accepted His gift of eternal life. They are wise examples for all.

Helen Keller February 28, 2019

Helen Keller once wrote, “The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” Interestingly, the Bible makes many references to the heart. Paul the Apostle was inspired to write in the New Testament, “with the heart man believes unto righteousness…” And God also inspired Jeremiah to write in the Old Testament, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” We cannot see or touch God’s love for us. But it is there for all, and when we accept it by faith, along with His wonderful gift of forgiveness and salvation, we can experience it in our hearts and lives.

Thalidomide February 27, 2019

In 2015, Frances Oldham Kelsey, a Canadian doctor and pharmacologist, passed away in London Ontario. Suspecting that the births of deformed infants in Europe and other parts of the world were linked to the ingestion of the drug Thalidomide by their mothers during pregnancy, Kelsey took action. Her persistence caused the blocking of American approval of thalidomide, which was causing so many serious birth defects] . As a result, she received the President’s Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service by John F. Kennedy. Not everything that claims to be true is true. Jesus, Who Himself is” the way, the truth and the life.” promises “you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” We can trust Him.

No Longer Afraid February 25, 2019

A World War 2 veteran had only about a week to live. When asked by his doctor if he was afraid, he said “no.” Then he explained that after hearing the radio program, “Insight for Living” with Dr. Charles Swindoll, he invited Christ into his life, and his fear of death was gone. Although formerly one of those which the Bible describes as being in bondage “through fear of death…”, he became the beneficiary of Jesus’ words, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” Nobody looks forward to the process of dying, but with Christ in one’s life, there need be no fear of death.

Don’t eat the Horse February 22, 2019

Horsemeat was found in the food chain in Great Britain, after testing revealed horse DNA in burgers. They were then removed from shop shelves. We really need to be careful with what we put in our mouths these days. And it’s a good idea to be vigilant as to what material we put in our minds, since falsehood often masquerades under the guise of truth. The Psalmist reminds us that “truth endures to all generations.” There is such a thing as absolute truth.. To suggest that truth depends on one’s perspective would be the same as saying that there is no moon unless I can see it. Jesus said, “the truth shall set you free.” Please read your Bible. There you will find the truth.

Immortality February 20, 2019

Dr. Philip Minton of Stanford University claims in his book “The Immortality Enzyme” that soon, there will be an enzyme on the market that will be used in fighting aging, cancer, and heart disease. Remarkable advances are adding years to the average life, but we cannot achieve immortality on our own. However, an immortal state is freely available. Jesus promised, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, yet shall he live.” There is no fountain of youth, or medicine that produces earthly immortality, but eternal life is possible if we trust in the One Who promised, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” Anyone want to live forever?

Heads in the Sand February 18, 2019

The number of obese children in Canada has tripled in the last thirty years, but only nine percent of parents acknowledge weight problems in their children. They prefer to compare their children with others, rather than facing what the weight scales reveal. Many of us also act like that when it comes to eternal matters, putting our heads in the proverbial sand. It seems easier for us to say, “I’m as good as the next person,” forgetting God’s warning that “there is none righteous, no not one.” Thinking people will acknowledge their spiritual need and turn to the One who said, “I am the way , the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. “

Hidden Treasure in the Attic February 15, 2019

Leo Guarente, cleaning out Maria Velos’s late mother’s home, found an envelope containing U.S. Savings bonds worth one hundred and fourteen thousand dollars. He realized that he was going to change this woman’s life for the better. Velosa was overwhelmed at the discovery calling it “a gift from heaven.” While it was a wonderful gift, the greatest gift from heaven is the gift of eternal life. The Bible says , “the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The Saviour took the punishment for our sins and paid our debt. It’s a gift found in a place often forgotten and neglected, the Bible. It too is a “gift from heaven” and can change lives.
