Easy Bullseyes August 26, 2019

A police officer in a small town noticed several bullseyes painted here and there. In the middle of each was a bullet hole. Learning the identity of the shooter, the officer met him and commented “It must have taken hours of practice to learn to shoot that well. But the young man responded, “No, actually it was quite easy. I shoot first, then draw the circle.” Many people, when carrying out unacceptable actions, such as dishonesty, or unfaithfulness to a spouse, “draw the circle” after their questionable actions and boast, “that’s the way I see it”, or “everyone is doing it.” But that won’t work with God. The Bible says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”

Selfies August 23, 2019

A 2018 study has found that between October 2011 and November 2017, there were 259 selfie deaths in 137 incidents reported globally, selfie takers perch on cliffs, pose beside wild animals, while taking pictures of themselves. One of them said, “It’s all about me…when I post a selfie, I’m getting confirmation from other people that I’m awesome…” A Bible passage reminds us of the importance of our inner self, rather than what we look like on the outside. The prophet Samuel, wrote in the Old Testament “…man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” One thoughtful person has suggested, “Perhaps a ‘heart- selfie’ is in order,” so we can see ourselves as God sees us– sinners in need of a Saviour.

Today August 21, 2019

John Ruskin was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He wrote on many subjects. Ruskin kept a beautiful stone paper weight on his desk. On it was carved a single word, “Today,” which he took as his personal motto. This one word is a great reminder to all, that each day is a gift from God to be used wisely. The writer of Hebrews in the New Testament used that word, saying, “Today, if you will hear His voice (God’s voice) do not harden your hearts.” And Paul the Apostle wrote, “I tell you, now is the time of God’s favour, today is the day of salvation.” Thankfully, Jesus invites us all, every day, with the words, “Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden…” There will never be a better time to turn to Jesus than today.

Dependence or Independence August 19, 2019

Most parents celebrate when their children grow up and become more independent. But Christians are completely dependent on the One who has provided the only way to heaven. As we depended on our Saviour to save us, we grow in like fashion. Paul reminded the Christians of His day, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.” This means that we are to live our lives trusting the One who is our Saviour. Proverbs advises, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Independence in life has its merits, but not when it keeps us from being wholly dependent on our Saviour.

Lessons from Peanuts and Lucy August 16, 2019

Lessons from Peanuts and Lucy August 16, 2019

In the comic strip “Peanuts”, Lucy tells Linus that children can’t live at home forever; they grow up and move away.” She smiles and adds, “when you leave Linus, I will get your room.” But Linus quickly counters, “Someday you will leave home too, Lucy. “She quickly turns up the TV and crawls into her chair with a bowl of ice cream. Many of us, like Lucy, refuse to think of unpleasant realities ahead. We grow older each day but ignore the fact that one day we must leave this world and meet our Maker. In light of that sobering truth, let’s heed the advice of Amos of old, who urged, “Prepare to meet your God.

Aloneness August 14, 2019

Are you lonely? Someone has said, “loneliness is today’s great soul sickness.” The affluent often shut themselves up in expensive high-rise apartments. Poor widows and widowers exist in barren slum rooms. The“party” crowd chases one thrill after another, but all share a deep sense of alienation and “aloneness.” Into this world of lonely people walks the Son of God. Jesus promises,” I will never leave you or forsake you.” We don’t need to go through life alone. If we are willing to sincerely ask Him, Jesus will come into our lives, remain with us always, forgive us and give us the gift of eternal life. He is the ultimate permanent solution to loneliness.

Do it Yourself August 12, 2019

“Do it yourself” books are very popular and have helped many people become “Mr. or Mrs.Fix It.” But despite our good intentions, sometimes experienced tradesmen need to be called in to correct our mistakes. Though we can do many things for ourselves, there is one area where we cannot do it ourselves. We cannot make ourselves into Christians. The Bible informs us that it’s— “By grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.” If we are hoping to get to get to heaven by our good works, we will fail. It is all from God, a gift to us.

Connect and Communicate August 9, 2019

“Connect and Communicate” continue to be the buzz words of society. The average North American spends at least eight- and one-half hours a day in front of a screen. This allows little time for serious thoughtfulness or meditation. The Psalmist urges us to “be still and know that I am God.” But are we listening? In many cases, the texting and tweeting have crowded out the “still small voice” of our Maker. But thankfully, the Lord still invites, “Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” We would all profit by spending less time in front of our screens, and more time with the world’s best seller, the Bible, which the Psalmist tells us is “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”

A Vacuum in every Heart August 7, 2019

Blaise Pascal, a French physicist, inventor, writer and Christian philosopher once said, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man, which only God can fill through His Son, Jesus Christ.” He was absolutely correct. Yet many strive to fill that emptiness, with money, pleasure, success or fame, only to find that success as society defines it is not the answer. Far better to heed the words of a beautiful gospel song, “Only Jesus can satisfy your soul, only He can change your heart and make you whole.” It was Jesus, who said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.” If there is a vacuum in your life, please let Jesus fill it.

Wandering from the Path August 5, 2019

Last month, Marta Malek and Maya Mirota, both 16, from Kitchener, Ont., spent four nights lost in massive Algonquin Park, after straying from the path. Happily, they have been found safe. Sadly, for many lost people, the ending is not as happy. The Bible describes our journey through life as follows. “All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own way…” Jesus told of two ways through life—a narrow way, which leads to eternal life, and a broad way which leads to spiritual destruction. Thankfully, Jesus tells us how to go the narrow way, with the words, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is the only way to forgiveness and heaven.
