God is Listening September 18, 2019

In the cartoon “Family Circus”, Grandma’s little grandson asks, “Grandma, which is your gooder ear? I need to tell you a whisper.” Grandmas are good listeners.” True! But there is an even better listener…our dear Heavenly Father. He hears the faintest whisper from sincere humble believers. Perhaps you are afraid of something hurtful which has happened recently, or something that might happen. David the Psalmist wrote, “I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears.” Our kind Heavenly Father invites us to “Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things…” Please take your burdens to the Lord and leave them there. He is listening.

Cyber-Bullying September 16, 2019

Cyber-bullying has become a household word. Intimate damaging photos posted on the internet have led to a rash of tragic, unnecessary suicides. Present day technology is readily available to a society that largely rejects the idea of a personal God to whom we are accountable. Paul warned in the New Testament, “Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Think this is narrow minded hysteria? Please wake up and look around you at what is going on in the world. But it is not too late! God is not dead. He’s alive and invites us to turn away from a godless lifestyle. Although this is a fallen world, God loves us so much, that He gave His only Son, Jesus, to die for us.

A Second Chance September 13, 2019

The following was written to an advice columnist. “I am a fifty-year old man, serving time for robbery. There is no one to love, and no one loves me. I know I have made bad choices and deserve punishment for my crime. Can I ever be happy again? Is it too late to start over? The columnist wisely replied, “With penitence comes redemption. It is never too late. ”While others may not give us a second chance, God will, when He sees a humble, repentant heart. Isaiah in the Old Testament passed on an invitation that is relevant today. He wrote, “Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near…He will have mercy…He will abundantly pardon.” Yes,we can still have a second chance.

Sydney J Harris’s Wisdom September 11, 2019

Newspaper columnist Sydney J. Harris once wrote, “When you calculate how short is the span of life on this planet…and how we spend this span fighting, …killing and hating, it seems a gruesome caricature of what civilization was intended to be.” Harris was describing a fallen race. Paul the Apostle described our spiritual condition, as a fallen race, writing, — “Therefore just as through one man (Adam), sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men…” Thankfully, one day, Jesus allowed Himself to be nailed to a Roman cross and became our substitute, now offering forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe on Him.

A Permanent Pardon September 9, 2019

“A criminal record can follow you all your life.” Those words were included in an ad by an organization promising criminal record removal. This is good news for lawbreakers. But there is better news regarding the more serious matter of breaking God’s laws. The Bible, God’s inspired Word, clearly states, “All have sinned….” and “There is none righteous.” In other words, we have all broken God’s laws. But since “Christ died for our sins”, He offers a full pardon to all. Christ took the punishment for our sin by His death on the cross. He became our substitute. When we sincerely repent and accept God’s gift of eternal life, we have a permanent pardon.

Right and Wrong Choices September 6, 2019

Election year has rolled around again, and voters will be given choices. Sometimes negative choices are harder to make than positive ones. Most people find it easier to eat chocolate cake than spinach or broccoli. But wrong choices can result in future pain. Pontius Pilot who lived in the age of Christ asked, “What shall I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?” Ultimately, we must all answer this question. Will we say “Yes” or “No” to God’s wonderful plan of salvation? An old gospel song asks the question, “What will you do with Jesus? Neutral you cannot be.” Our answer to this question will determine where we will spend eternity. We are all going to live somewhere forever.

Just As I Am September 4, 2019

“I’m miserable. I would like to become a Christian, but I don’t know how.” These words were spoken by Charlotte Elliot of Clapham, England. Hearing her concern, Doctor Ceasar Malan said, “Why don’t you come just as you are?”Charlotte pondered these words and became a true believer. Her life was transformed. Later, she penned the words of the now well-known invitation hymn, sung around the world…”Just as I am without one plea…Oh Lamb of God, I come, I come.” Jesus’ invitation is “Whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.” And the only way to respond to that gracious invitation is to come “just as we are,” in our sin, weakness and helplessness.

Talking in a Digital Age September 2, 2019

Shirley Turkle, in her book, “The Power of Talking in a Digital Age” warns of the danger of neglecting our relationships for time with our screens. Empathy, discovery, patience, debate and mentoring all thrive in conversation. Unfortunately, to the detriment of family and friends, many people prefer technology. The most essential relationship of all is that with God, our Maker. And we don’t need a smart phone to reach Him. The Heavenly Father invites each of us to ”Call upon me and I will answer you…” Elsewhere in His Word, God promises, “…you will find Me when you search for me with all your heart.” Have you ever sincerely called upon the Lord for forgiveness and cleansing?

Beware of Shortcuts August 30, 2019

An experienced woodsman took a shortcut but found himself lost in the Canadian wilderness. For more than eight weeks, he struggled to survive and get back to civilization. Finally, near death, he reached a highway and was picked up by a passing motorist. For many who wander from the path, the ending is not always as happy. Isaiah described the spiritual condition of us all on the journey of life, writing, “All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned everyone to his own way.” Thankfully, Jesus told of the right road which he called “the narrow gate,” leading to eternal life. He also said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Unexpected Obstacles August 28, 2019

Bird lovers, please take note. It is estimated that more than a million birds are killed each year in Toronto, colliding with city structures. Many of the fatalities are caused by reflective windows which keep skies visible fooling the birds into thinking they are on a clear path. This provides life lessons for all. Choosing our own way through life, we sometimes think we are on a clear path, only to crash into unexpected obstacles. Stunned and broken we ask, “Why? “In many cases, it is because we have ignored the advice of Proverbs, which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths,”
