Summer is coming June 15

The official first day of Summer is June 21st. Many are planning on going on a vacation. Whether a person takes time off while staying at home or getting away there will be a break of one form or another. Something that we all know about vacation is it passes by quickly. It is here and then the next thing you know it is gone. It is interesting because the Bible describes our very lives as being here and then they are gone. In the book of 1 Peter our lives are referred to as, “our stay here.” It does not last long. In the book of James our lives are pictured as being like a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Thankfully, the Bible tells us this life is not the end. In 1 John we are told a way in which life, real life can continue on, it is written, “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

Not Enough Sleep June 13

If you are trying to get by on about six hours or less of sleep a night during the workweek, you are setting your brain up for future failure, according to a new study published last month in the journal, Nature Communications. In the study it was found that persistent short sleep duration between the ages of 50 and 70 was associated with a 30 percent increase of dementia risk. This was determined after following nearly 8000 people for 25 years. In the Bible in the book of Matthew Jesus shares about the importance of rest although he is not talking about sleep. He says, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

3 Things Employers are Looking up on your Facebook Account June 10

There are lots of students looking for employment this summer. The media agency, Social Hire, has noted 3 things employers typically look up on facebook before hiring that might be good to keep in mind. The first thing they mentioned is employers are looking to see if you are a party person. The second thing they want to know is if you have spoken poorly of your previous boss or place of employment. The third thing they look at is how well you communicate. They actually check your grammar. These three things are something that may be worth keeping in mind. On a much more important scale, the Bible tells us the kind of person God is looking for. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 66, verse 2 it reads, “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.

Out with the old and in with the new June 8

The season of yard sales is about to come upon us. The idiom, “out with the old and in with the new” will be a reality for a number of vendors soon, as they get rid of what is not of value to them and use the money to invest into some that is. Something new! It is interesting, on a spiritual level, when a person receives the forgiveness of sin that God offers through Jesus Christ and enters into a personal relationship with God this person experiences the idiom, “out with the old and in with the new”. This includes a person’s affections toward God, one’s lifestyle, everything! In the bible, in 2 Corinthians 5:17 it reads, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Eating Avocados – June 6

According to the World Health Organization cardiovascular disease is a leading killer worldwide, taking nearly 18 million lives each year. Recently there was a study published by the journal of the American Heart Association that had an interesting insight into a type of fruit that a number of people love to eat. It was found that those whom had at least two servings of avocado a week reduced the risk of having a heart attack by 21% when compared to avoiding or rarely eating avocados. Who would of thought eating guacamole could possibly extend your life? Did you know the Bible also has information that has to do with a means of not simply living longer but living eternally with God in heaven? John 3:16 reads, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

True Pleasure June 3

“What decides the purpose of life is simply the programme of the pleasure principle,” said Sigmund Freud. After 100 years of promoting the importance of the pleasure principle, indeed over-promoting it, today there are so many people who have bought into it. In this frightening complex world, many people try to calm their fears with earthly pleasure and self-indulgence. King Solomon tried it over two thousand years ago, writing “whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,” only to conclude, “There was no profit under the sun.” But the Psalmist was inspired to urge us to turn to God for true pleasure, writing, “You will show me the path of life; In your presence is fullness of joy.

You are what you think about – June 1

The weight loss market worldwide is worth over an estimated 70 billion dollars. It has also been estimated that the average adult will try over 126 different diets in their lifetime. The old adage, you are what you eat, seems to connect with people because so many people are focused on what they eat. What we eat effects how we feel but many would argued that what we think about is even more important. In the Bible, Philippians 4:8 reads, 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. I would encourage you to eat well but be sure to meditate on these things.Pastor Gary Harris – Georgetown Baptist Church

Lots of Questions – May 30

Some studies show 4-year-olds ask as many as 200-300 questions a day. A lot of parents would not argue with such a study. Questioning is part of our nature. Do you ever find yourself questioning God? Why would He allow this to happen or why did He not do that? The fact is if you believe there is a God you will question Him. A person can be in relationship with God, made possible by Jesus Christ, be what the Bible calls a child of God, and still question Him. We are given some insight from the book of Isaiah in chapter 55:8-9 regarding why we might find ourselves questioning God. It reads, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts your thoughts.

Getting Free – May 27

Last month in the Chesapeake Bay a container ship holding 5000 containers was freed after being stuck in the mud for over a month. A full moon and a high spring tide were a real aid in getting the ship unstuck. Did you know that the Bible tells us that sin has gotten us stuck from being able to have a relationship with God? Isaiah 59:2 reads, But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear. Thankfully though there is a way to be freed from this, through trusting in what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross and living our lives for Him. In the Bible, in 1 John 1:9 it reads, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Expensive Clubs – May 25

If you golf, I bet your clubs were not cheap to buy but did you know that last month the iron set used by Tiger Woods to win four majors in a row sold for a record 5.1 million dollars. Imagining owning a set of clubs that are valued at over 5 million dollars. It is way beyond the reach of most people. In the Bible, Jesus shares about a treasure that is found that is within your reach. He tells of a man who found a treasure in a field and then went and sold all that he had to buy the field so he could have the treasure. The treasure represents the kingdom of heaven that is of infinite worth beyond a set of golf clubs or anything else here on earth but we can possess it. The way to it is through Jesus! He said in John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me.
