Bill Gates has been quoted as saying, “my success, part of it certainly, is that I have focused in on a few things.” I trust you have recognized the importance of the right focus in your own life. Jesus shares in John 14:15, if you love me you will keep my commandments. A problem that some people have faced is they have not focused on the most important aspect of this verse, loving Jesus, they have focused on obedience. The problem is obedience is not to be the focus but love which will produce obedience. Jesus was asked one day, what the greatest commandment given in the Law was and he responded by saying, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Looking ahead can be very helpful during the hard times of life. We have gone through a hard season with Covid-19. It is not over but we are getting closer to having this season behind us. It is helpful to focus on what is a head such as Covid-19 no restricting families from being together, not having to wear masks, not hearing of the most recent outbreaks. It is exciting to look ahead! In the Bible, in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 2 verse 9 God encourages all those who love Him to look ahead. Not only to look ahead but also be prepared to experience what is beyond what their minds can comprehend. It reads, “ “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Don’t you just love it when you are talking with someone and you are so engaged in the conversation that you look at your phone and realize time has just flown by. I have a rowing machine in my home that I use most mornings throughout the week. I have to confess I detest using this machine because I find it to be ridiculously repetitive and time seems to slow down. Something that I have found to be a game changer for me is rather than focus on the exercise, I use this time to focus on God through my relationship made possible by Jesus Christ. I pray through the acronym ACTS – Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication. I focus on adoring God, confessing my sins to God, thanking God for the little and big blessings in my life and praying for the needs of myself and other people. It is amazing how time just seems to fly by.

Messages from the Heavens April 12

The Perseverance Rover landed on Mars this past February. Since its landing it has been fascinating to see high definition pictures of the red planet and hear recoding’s that have been taken. Some people have noted that they have found the sound recordings sent from Mars to be even more exciting than the pictures. Did you know that the Bible tells us that God has messages that He sends from the heavens, from everything we see as we look up! We are told of this message in Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. I would encourage you to make it a point to stop and look up and listen.

Do you remember playing the game phone tag? A person is assigned as being it and she whispers something into the ear of the person beside her and then the next person and so on until at the end what is shared is nothing like the original. Some people think that is the way the Bible, we have today, has been put together. That is not the way the Bible has been translated. The way it has been put together is translators go back as far as they can to translate from the earliest and best manuscripts. Early manuscripts of which there is an abundance of. Just recently Israeli archeologists found dead sea scroll fragments in a desert cave bearing a biblical text believed to have been placed there nearly 1900 years ago. The psalmist writes regarding the words of God in Psalm 12:7, You shall keep them, O Lord, you shall preserve them from this generation forever.

If you do a Google search you will find it notes there are 4300 religions in the world today. I have had conversations with different people in the past, talking about God, in which they have shared they do not like religion. I have responded by sharing that I do not like religion as well. I will tell them I am not interested in pursuing religion. I am interested in pursuing a relationship. A relationship with God. A relationship that was made possible by Jesus going to the cross and paying for the price of our sins. The Bible tells us in John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. I have encouraged those whom I have talked to in the past, “Don’t pursue religion, pursue a relationship.”

We love to hear quotes from famous people. When they say something we are more inclined to perk up and listen. Here is a quote from the late international statesman Sir Lionel Luckhoo who became famous from being in the Guinness book of world records for his unprecedented, 245 consecutive defense murder trial acquittals. He said this in relation to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “I have spent more than 42 years as a defense trial lawyer appearing in many parts of the world and am still in active practice. I have been fortunate to secure a number of successes in jury trials and I say unequivocally the evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is so overwhelming that it compels acceptance of proof which leaves absolutely no room for doubt”

We are entering the time of year when people are thinking a lot about gardening. Considering what they need to do to get ready for the season to come. Did you know that a focal point of the Easter account takes place in a garden? It was in the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus was considering what was to come in relation to the unfathomable hardship He was about to face. Do you know what would have been on the forefront of His mind? It was not that He was soon to be arrested, it was not that his disciples were about to desert Him, it was not the torment that he would face leading up to going to the cross or even physical pain he would face on the cross. It was the fact that He would become sin for us in order to provide a way that we could get right with God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 reads, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

She was Nicknamed Saybie by the hospital staff, in San Diego where she was born in November 2018. She weighed just a little more than half a pound, the world’s tiniest baby to survive premature birth on record. She was not expected to live. But in May of 2019 she went home, a healthy five-pound miracle. Unborn babies reveal much. A heartbeat can be detected as early as 18 days after conception. At 12 weeks fingernails, and eyebrows form. At 20 weeks the baby has all major organs, can hear and respond to a mother’s voice, and feel pain. No wonder the Psalmist exclaimed, “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Each of us is unique, made in the image of God, with potential to know, love and have fellowship with Him. Let’s value every person’s life.

The Family Circus cartoon pictured a little guy drawing his older brother’s picture, who upon seeing it was not impressed. He said, “Hey, you said you were going to draw me. I don’t look like that!” The young artist replied, “Well maybe you don’t know what you look like.” We chuckle, but there is a lesson here. It is easy to have a distorted self-image, not only of our outward appearance but also of our “inner self.” The Bible, God’s Word, describes us as “sheep who have gone astray” and also informs us frankly that “there is none righteous, no not one.” Only when we honestly see ourselves as God sees us and admit that “we do look like that”, are we ready to ask for forgiveness and cleansing. Jesus said, “He that comes to me, I will not cast out.
