Admiral Thomas Williams, in command of a ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean on September I, 1799, felt a surprising and unexplainable urge to steer toward the uninhabited Ascension Island. Approaching the island, a sailor spotted a white flag. On the island they found more than a dozen shipwrecked men, destitute and near starvation. They had been praying for a miracle—someone to rescue them in the nick of time. Their prayers were answered. It reminds us of the first coming of Christ into our fallen, needy world. Paul wrote, “…when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son…to redeem those who were under the law……” As Admiral Williams rescued those lost shipwrecked men, Christ came to “seek and to save that which was lost…” Jesus is still seeking for those who are spiritually lost. His death makes it possible for all who believe to become what God calls “saved.”
