William Booth’s Famous Speech October 28, 2019

General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, once said, “While women weep…while little children go hungry…while there yet remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight…I’ll fight to the very end.” General Booth believed that people without Christ in their lives were spiritually lost. This is based on a Bible verse which says, “He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God, does not have life.” Booth was on biblically sound grounds. He reached others through kindness, feeding the hungry, and sharing the gospel to prepare them for heaven. William Booth’s life mirrors that of the One he served– Jesus Christ. Our Saviour too reached out to weeping women, hungry children and souls in darkness. It is, however, not only the poor and homeless who need the gospel, because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Beautiful Fall Leaves October 25, 2019

We are well into October, the month of beautiful colour, with the brilliant orange, yellow, rust and red of the Fall leaves. One man’s interest was caught by a single leaf, which was only a fine network of veins, the rest of the leaf was gone. Similarly, as we age, hair turns white, sight begins to fade, skin wrinkles. But inside, our soul and spirit are eternal. Jesus once asked, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his own soul?” The answer is obvious. We should not be fooled into thinking this life is all there is. We are going to live somewhere forever. Where, will depend on our relationship to Jesus Christ. John the disciple was inspired to remind us, “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” And Jesus Himself stated clearly, “No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Dorian October 23, 2019

On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, Hurricane Dorian struck eastern Canada, causing wind damage and bringing heavy rainfall. In Nova Scotia alone, 400,000 people were without power, and at least 50,000 lost power in Prince Edward Island because of Dorian. Homes were flooded, roofs torn off, much damage was done. As we travel through life, we too are subject to massive storms of sickness, fear, disillusionment and more. But when we build our lives on the Rock, Christ Jesus, we can withstand those storms. Isaiah the Old Testament prophet wrote, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” When storms come to us, we can cry out, “Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.”

Mercy Illustrated October 21, 2019

Judge Fiorella H. La Guardia was mayor of New York City during the depression years. On one occasion he was called upon to pass judgment on a grandmother who had stolen bread to feed her starving grandchildren. La Guardia fined her $10 but then paid the fine himself — a wonderful picture of mercy. We are all guilty before God. We have broken His law. The Bible declares “The wages of sin is death.” But Jesus, by His death on the cross, paid the penalty for us. In gratitude, we should humbly accept God’s mercy and receive Christ as our Saviour. Paul explained “…when we were still without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly.” Don’t worry that that you will be turned away. Jesus promised “… the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”

Danger of being set Adrift October 18, 2019

Rice Lake, South of Peterborough, Ontario is a prime destination for people who like fishing. I read recently about three friends who were fishing for bluegill on that popular lake and having great success. But after a while they noticed that the action had slacked off. Then they realized why. A strong wind had arisen and pushed their boat across the water. The anchor had not been strong enough to hold them. When our hopes are not anchored on Jesus’ love and faithfulness, we can be set adrift by discouragement and hardship or tragedy. But when we believe the promises of God, good things happen. Consider this gem: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast,” That is what happens when we are trusting in Him.

Near, yet so Far October 16, 2019

Back in Canada’s early days, several pioneers were sheltering in a place called Port Babine when their supplies gave out. Victor Clark and a guide went to get supplies. On their way back they were caught in a blizzard. Unable to go on, they spent a miserable night. As morning dawned, they saw the lights of the fort, only a few yards away. They were …so near, and yet so far. Perhaps you have heard the story of Jesus’ love for you many times; you’ve been near, yet not quite there. King Agrippa in a New Testament story said he was “almost persuaded” to take Christ into his life but he did not. The Bible reminds us that we will find the Lord, “…if we seek Him with all our hearts.” Let’s not be “so near and yet so far” from all God offers.

A Pill for Loneliness October 14, 2019

“Life is loneliness, despite all the opiates…all the gaiety of parties… and the grinning faces…” Sylvia Plath wrote this nearly four centuries ago. Recent studies show that nearly half of Canadians sometimes feel lonely. Now a pill is being tested to cure loneliness, but is that really the best answer? Loneliness is a multifaceted problem, and the Bible speaks of it too. “The Lord satisfies the longing soul and the hungry soul He fills with good things,” and Jesus invites, “Come to me all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” If you are surrounded with friends, but are still lonely, have you met Jesus? He is One who “…sticks closer than a brother…” With Him in our lives, we may at times be lonely, but we will never be alone.”

Overlooked October 11, 2019

An extremely rare copy of Shakespeare’s “First Folio” has been discovered in a library of a 19th century Scottish mansion. Published in 1623 it has been verified as authentic. Emma Smith, professor of Shakespeare Studies, Oxford University said, “It was there in plain sight, but nobody quite knew what it was.” We, too, often overlook obvious blessings. One such is our God inspired Bible. The Psalmist reminds us, “I rejoice at Your Word, as one who finds a great treasure.” Perhaps in your home there is a Bible that was handed down to you by a loved one, and it is gathering dust. Is it time for you to “re-discover” it? In that great book we can learn so much, such as our true spiritual condition in God’s sight. There we learn how to be forgiven and become members of God’s wonderful family. It can change our lives. Please read your Bible.

Anonymity October 9, 2019

Well-known author Jane Goodsell wrote “Anonymity is a stern test of character…if we wore name tags all the time, our living habits might undergo a renaissance…”. She’s right. It’s human nature to push the limits when no one is watching. But Someone is watching! The Psalmist reminds us of this with the words, “O Lord, you have searched me and known me…you are acquainted with all my ways…” Yes, while others may not see, God sees everything, and some day, we will all give account to Him. We are all sinners by nature and by choice. Since “There is none righteous, no not one,” we need to get ready to meet our Maker. We can’t get ready alone, but thankfully, help is available. God promises, “If you will confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Please reach out for that help today.

The Prince of Peace October 7, 2019

General Douglas MacArthur once said, “Men, since the beginning of time, have sought peace.” True, but from the beginning of time, the world has seldom seen peace. Man’s fallen nature results in aggression, selfishness and greed since “there is none righteous, no not one.” There is only one answer to man’s personal wrong-doing problem; that is to know, accept, love and serve Jesus, God’s Son. The prophet Isaiah, when prophesying the return of the Saviour to set up His kingdom on earth, announced, “…unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given…and He will be called the Prince of Peace.” It’s true, nations will not bow to the Prince of Peace, but you and I can. Then we will experience true peace because of the promise that when He is in our lives, “…being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” I’m Alex Rockwell.
