Chinese Proverb June 19, 2017

An old Chinese proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” And the most important first step in our journey toward God is to humbly acknowledge our fallen nature. That’s because the Bible states clearly, “There is none righteous, no not one.” Then, after admitting our spiritual need, we are ready to take the next step- accepting the fact that there is only One who has the power to forgive, and give us the gift of eternal life, here and now. That’s Jesus. He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The third step is to invite Jesus into our lives. Paul wrote, “whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Please take these first three steps today and you’ll be on your way to a wonderful life and some day–heaven.

A God-Shaped Vacuum June 16, 2017

Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Christian philosopher. Many brilliant quotes are attributed to him, such as the following. “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man that cannot be filled by any created thing, but only God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.” Those words are in line with the Bible, because Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one can come to the Father except through me.” This contradicts the popular idea held by many, that we become Christians and are prepared for heaven by doing good works, being religious, or by means of a human mediator. Timothy wrote, “…there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all.” Please consider that today.

World’s Tallest Free-Standing Structure June 14, 2017

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates stands over twenty-seven hundred feet. It is believed to be the world’s tallest man-made free-standing structure. Its foundation of concrete and steel is one hundred and sixty-four feet deep. Foundations are vital in buildings, but also in people. Jesus warned that we should not build on sand, but on solid rock. Paul wrote “…no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Clearly, we shouldn’t build our lives on sandy unstable philosophies, such as “eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die,” but on a personal relationship with Jesus Himself, Only He can take us successfully through this life. Only He can and open the door to Heaven. He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

A New Man June 12, 2017

Lewis Roberts from England said, “Doctors have basically rebuilt me.” He feels like a new man. Involved in a serious car accident, he had hip replacement, five fractured vertebrae, a crushed pelvis and a damaged eye socket. He also had a broken jaw, head injuries and memory problems. We are thankful for medical science and trained physicians who can do these wonderful things for the human body. But did you know that God performs such operations daily? Paul wrote of the transformation that is available to anyone who asks for it. He described it with the words, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.” We are “in Christ” when we acknowledge our spiritual bankruptcy and invite the Saviour to forgive and cleanse.”

Little things can cause Big Trouble June 9, 2017

In their relatively new home, the water pressure dropped. When a plumber removed the filter in the pump, and let the water run in a bucket, the amount of water coming, was less than the pressure the pump was showing. However, the experienced plumber quickly found the culprit. A small pebble was blocking things. When it was removed, the pressure came back to normal immediately. This true story illustrates an important truth. King Solomon wrote of “ the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” Pleasures, riches, friendships can be the little pebbles or little foxes that keep us from coming to Jesus. But if we return to the Saviour, acknowledge our spiritual need and ask His forgiveness, the fellowship God intended for us becomes a reality.

D-Day June 7, 2017

Yesterday, June 6th, was the 73rd anniversary of D-Day. On this day in 1944 Allied forces landed in Normandy France, then occupied by the Nazis. It involved 24,000 British, U.S. and Canadian troops. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and contributed to the end of the Second World War. This amazing day reminds us of another even greater day in history. That was C-Day, or Calvary Day when Christ gave His life for all mankind on the Cross. Paul described it as follows. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. “Today, we honour those who fought for and died for our freedom on D-Day. But as we remember Calvary, let’s honour the One who died for us, by accepting His death in our place and the gift of eternal life to all who will receive it.

Ignoring the Warnings June 5, 2017

Atlantic Canada has not had very much sun this year. We have had rain and cloudy skies. Maybe in part, that is why Canadians are spending more time soaking up the sun without adequate protection. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, melanoma, skin cancer will account for thousands of new cases and thousands more non-melanoma skin cancers are expected to be diagnosed in 2017. But ignoring repeated warnings can have disastrous results. This is true regarding eternal matters as well. Proverbs warns, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” King Agrippa in the New Testament, after hearing a clear gospel presentation and invitation from the Apostle Paul, responded with the words, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.” Not a wise response.

Beware of Unreliable Information June 2, 2017

Wikipedia is one of the most popular online reference tools, but it’s not a reliable source for health information. The University of North Carolina researchers found significant errors in 9 out of 10 disorders. On the other hand the Bible is the truly reliable source of information about our spiritual health. The Good Book informs us that “The wages of sin is death,” and that there is only one way to heaven–personal faith in Jesus. We read, “Christ died for our sin.” Still many ignore what the Bible teaches and invent their own philosophies, such as a good education, good works and religion. This is both sad and unnecessary since God has said to all who invite Christ into their lives, “This is the testimony, that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

Destination June 1, 2017

Vacation time is fast approaching and for many of us, this will involve travel. We decide where we want to go and then, in some cases, make detailed plans for the journey. Often, we have to ask for information and instruction from others. The psalmist wrote, “Show me your ways O Lord; teach me your paths, lead me in your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation.” We are all on a life journey and we have a choice of destination–eternal home in heaven with God, or a place forever separated from Him. God has given us a wonderful book of instruction–the Bible. In it He gives direction for all. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Are you sure of your destination? Do you know where you will be in the next life? Please think about that today.

Over 70 – but Very Happy May 31, 2017

Greg Gutfeld remarked recently on Fox News Network that “the less you have of something, the more precious it becomes. For older people, that something is time. He was referring to a recent survey that claimed people over seventy were happier than they have ever been. Although our life span has increased, because of better health care, eventually we will all run out of time. Somebody once said, “you are going to live somewhere forever. Better learn how to live.” Amos the Old Testament Prophet prudently advised, “Prepare to meet your God.” Jesus informed us how to be prepared. He said, “I am the way the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” He also said, “…I stand at the door and knock. If anyone…opens the door, I will come in.” He was speaking of the door to our lives.
