St. Patrick’s Day March 15, 2021

This coming Wednesday, March 17, millions will remember the man called Saint Patrick. While we don’t know if he was ever canonized, that is not to say he was not a saint, in God’s eyes . The New Testament describes all who have sincerely invited Christ into their lives, as saints. There we read, “To the church of God, to those…called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” So, if Patrick does deserve to be called a saint, it’s not because he was canonized, or because he was a Protestant or a Roman Catholic, but simply because he had met the biblical standard for sainthood. That is, he had acknowledged himself as a sinner, and had asked Christ into his life. Are you a saint?

Adrift on the Sea of Life March 12, 2021

A few years ago, a teenage boy found himself adrift on an ice flow in North River PEI. Although the chunks of ice looked secure, they turned out to be dangerous. Fortunately, he was rescued by fire fighters. This story reminds me of many of us who sometimes find ourselves adrift on the sea of life. We cling to such things as riches, success, good health or religion. But sometimes currents sweep us away. Thankfully there is One who can rescue us. His name is Jesus. The Bible says He is patient with us and as Paul the Apostle wrote, God is “not willing that any should perish…” the kind words of Jesus, our Rescuer are, “Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

All are Accountable March 10, 2021

This is the year of a federal election in Canada, when members of Parliament will be held accountable for how they have governed or functioned in opposition. In like manner, the Bible reminds us that “each of us shall give account of himself to God.” But while politicians cannot know ahead of election day what result they will have, we can know here and now our eternal destiny. That’s because the trustworthy Word of God assures us that something very good will happen to those who acknowledge their wrong-doing and turn to Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord. The Bible says, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” Personal faith in Christ always results in eternal life.

Don’t Ignore Debt March 8, 2021

“Ignoring debt doesn’t make it go away.” That obvious statement was made by Walter McKinnon, an insolvency trustee with MNP a national accounting, tax and business consulting firm. Even more urgent is the necessity to deal with our spiritual debt. Isaiah in the Old Testament, speaking for all mankind, wrote, “your iniquities have separated you from God.” Paul, writing in the New Testament added, “The wages of sin is death.” Ignoring these facts will not make them go away. We can never be good enough to reach God’s standard’s, so we must accept His solution. A beautiful old hymn has it right, with the words, “Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.

Fear March 5, 2021

Your child snuggles close whispering, “I’m afraid.” And who among us has not experienced fear? It may be fear of the dark, or of an animal. You reassure the little one trying to soothe his or her fears. But deep inside you too have felt fear’s chilling impact. There are irrational fears but there is also a healthy fear that causes one to take appropriate action about a problem. Solomon of old wrote, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” If we are not rightly related to God, a healthy fear should lead us to a turning from wrong-doing, and a turning to the Lord Jesus, Who said, “Come unto me…and I will give you rest.”

Sudden Unexpected Storms March 3, 2021

Leah Eichler, writing in the Globe and Mail speaks of the uncertainties of life in her article,“ How I Learned to love Uncertainty.” And many of us, when sudden change hits, are left feeling helpless and insecure. But while we cannot foresee the future and its chaos, we can learn how to react. On one occasion, Jesus and His disciples were caught in a sudden storm on the sea of Galilee. The terrified disciples called out, “Lord save us, we are perishing.” In response, “Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm.” We cannot control the uncertainties of our lives, but we can call out to Jesus, the One who can bring peace in the midst of our storms.

Ready March 1, 2021

Several years ago, a married couple made arrangements for their passing and burial. Their headstone includes their names, dates of birth, marriage, and space for the dates of their passing. Many others take these preparatory steps. But this couple made soul preparation. On the bottom of their tombstone is the word “Redeemed,” indicating that they have heeded the Biblical counsel to “prepare to meet your God.” They are aware that they, like all of us, “have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But thankfully they also know that “Christ died for our sins,” and have accepted His gift of eternal life. They are wise examples for all.

Correct Diagnosis Important February 26, 2021

A man who was in pain and fading in and out of consciousness, was rushed to the emergency department of a Maritime hospital. After waiting four hours, he finally saw a doctor, who examined him hurriedly and released him. Fortunately, another doctor was uneasy about the diagnosis and ordered further investigation. The patient was found to be in a life-threatening condition. Appropriate steps were taken which saved his life. Careful diagnosis is vital. And it is even more important when it pertains to our spiritual health. The Bible gives a proper diagnosis for everyone of us, telling us that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked…” Thankfully our Heavenly Father, the Great Physician has prescribed the cure. He says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

Hetty Green – Big Miser February 24, 2021

Henrietta Howland “Hetty” Green was an American businesswoman and financier. She inherited one hundred million dollars when she was thirty years old, eventually becoming a billionaire. Sadly, her obsession with money caused the estrangement of her husband and children. When her son Ned broke his leg, she treated him at home to save money, resulting in his leg being amputated. Hetty’s story reminds one of a caution in the New Testament written by Timothy. He wrote, “…the love of money is the root of all evil…” Jesus warned, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” We are here on earth for just a while. But we are going to live somewhere forever. Let’s live with eternity’s values in view.

A wife’s Appreciation February 22, 2021

“I am so thankful you are my husband…You have been a godly example as a husband, father and grandfather. I thank God for bringing us together. I love you more today than when we were first married.” Those words were written by a grateful wife shortly before her death. In a day when, according to Statistics Canada, nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, it is remarkable to hear of such a marriage. Paul the Apostle, in the Bible urged, “…husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it.” Such human love is a picture of God’s love for us. He loved us so much that He gave His only Son, Jesus to die on that old rugged cross for us. As a wife receives her husband’s love, we can receive God’s love. When we do, He comes into our lives, makes us His children and prepares us for heaven.
