True Friendship October 4, 2019

“Friendship is really a matter of time. Time to listen, help and care.” These thoughtful excerpts are from a poem by Amanda Bradley. Earthly friendships are wonderful but the best friend we could ever have is the Lord Jesus, God’s Son. The Bible, which is God’s inspired Word, tells us “He loved us and gave Himself for us.” Paying our sin debt by His death on Calvary’s cross, Jesus offers eternal life to all who believe on Him. We are told, “The gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Joseph Scriven wrote a much-loved hymn which includes the following words. “What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear… Can we find a Friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? …take it to the Lord in prayer.” Jesus wants to be our friend.

Misplaced Trust October 3, 2019

Though many depend on the daily horoscope to foretell the future for them, their trust is misplaced. It is not the stars that can tell us the future, but rather the God of the stars. The Psalmist wrote, “From the heavens, the Lord looks down and sees all mankind…He watches all who live on earth.” An insightful songwriter put it as follows: “I don’t know about tomorrow; I just live from day to day… I don’t worry o’er the future for I know what Jesus said…and today I’ll walk beside Him for He knows what is ahead…Many things about tomorrow, I don’t seem to understand, but I know who holds tomorrow and I know Who holds my hand.” Who is leading us into the future? It had better be someone who knows what is ahead. Jesus knows, because “All things were made by Him.” We can trust Him for the future.

Trivial Things October 2, 2019

Napoleon Bonaparte, the great French leader once said, “Trivial things often determine the outcome of a battle.” This is true in our lives as well. Unforgiveness can lead to bitterness. Illicit pleasure-seeking will in the end, leave emptiness and procrastination in making life’s greatest decision regarding acceptance of Jesus’ offer of salvation. This can result in an eternity of regret. Isaiah in the Old Testament tells us, “Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near…He will abundantly pardon.” There is no better time than the present to pray the following: “God be merciful to me, a sinner and save me for Jesus’ sake.” You may be assured that if you pray that prayer sincerely and humbly, the kind Heavenly Father will open His arms to you.

Loss of Power October 1, 2019

Many people in the Maritimes and elsewhere were painfully without something important last month. What do light, heat, the internet, water pressure, refrigeration, and television all have in common? If you said power, you were correct. None of these happens without the power of electricity. Power is a vital part of our lives. And there are many types of power. One New Testament passage records Paul’s words, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes.” Paul describes the living of the Christian life as an empowerment from God. The believer’s union with Christ delivers him or her from the power of wrong-doing and introduces him or her to the “power of Christ’s resurrection.” That power is available to us all.

Perfection – God’s Business September 30, 2019

Actor Michael J. Fox once said, “I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence I can reach for, perfection is God’s business!” This is an insightful comment. Though we may excel in many things, we cannot reach perfection. The Bible reminds us “There is none righteous, no not one.” That is precisely why Jesus, the perfect Son of God, died on the old rugged cross to take the punishment for our sin. When we repent and ask God to forgive us, He does just that. And the Bible reminds us that “Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.” Please, think about that today

Take Me Home September 27, 2019

“Take me home to the place that I belong” is a line in John Denver’s famous song “Country Roads, Many people feel nostalgic about their childhood homes and wish to relive those happy times. But though we can remember and lookback, we cannot go back. However, we can always look up to Jesus. He made a wonderful promise to all who humble themselves and accept Him as Saviour. He said, “Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me…In my Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you. “Because of this promise, when thinking about the time when we pass from this life, we can all ask the Heavenly Father,“Take me home.”

Brain Fitness September 25, 2019

Today, many are concerned about what has been called “brain fitness.” Doctors recommend less screen time and more mental stimulation by reading, intelligent analysis and conversation. God’s Word, the Bible, introduces another dimension to healthy “brain fitness.”. In the matter of things eternal, we are told to “Study to show yourself approved unto God…rightly dividing the Word of truth.” and to “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.“When we exercise our spiritual muscles and fix our thoughts on God, He will reveal to us our sin and need of a Saviour, and the wonderful plan of salvation which He has made available to all.

No Fake Fingerprints September 23, 2019

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper once said “You can fake your name, and your documents, but you cannot fake your fingerprints.” It might also be added, “You can fool your friends and family, but you cannot fool God.” Prudent people do not try to hide from Him. They acknowledge their wrong-doing and humbly turn to Him for forgiveness. The Bible, God’s inspired Word, assures us in the book of Isaiah, of what happens when we do. “Let them return to the Lord that He may have mercy upon them…for He will abundantly pardon…” When sincere humble honest individuals reach out to Jesus for help, He promises that “Him who comes to me I will not cast out.

Unconscious Bias September 20, 2019

Shankar Vedantam is an American journalist, Host of Hidden Brain, and correspondent for National Public Radio. Though some of his conclusions may be suspect, it is difficult to argue with his statement referring to what he calls “the hidden brain,” writing, “Unconscious bias shapes behaviour.” Solomon was inspired to write in the Proverbs that “There is a way that seems right unto a man, but its end is death.” Later He wrote, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” In other words— if we close our minds to truth, allow bias to blind us, we reap the consequences. Thankfully, it’s never too late to open our minds to the truth of the Word of God. In its original manuscripts, there has never been one proven error.
