Sneaking into College April 5, 2019

Last month fifty people were charged in the biggest college admissions scam ever prosecuted in the USA. Wealthy parents allegedly bribed college personnel with millions of dollars to get their children into some of the nation’s most elite institutions. While these people tried fraud to get their children admitted to college, since time immemorial, men and women have used illegal means, including riches and good works, to try to gain admission to heaven. The Bible, reveals that it is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to God’s mercy He saves us…” and that it is “…By grace we are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Air Pollution April 3, 2019

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to health, causing one in nine deaths annually around the world. The article added, “What we can’t see can hurt us.” How true! And what we don’t know can hurt us too. According to the Bible, God’s inspired Word, there is only one way to heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” To all who sincerely want a proper relationship with God, and desire to be prepared for the next life now, Jeremiah was inspired to write, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Now you know. Please take appropriate action.

April Fool’s Day April 1, 2019

It is April Fool’s Day 2019, celebrated in various countries by people playing practical jokes and hoaxes on friends and neighbors. The goal is to light-heartedly “make a fool” of someone. The Bible also refers to the word “fool”. Jesus told about a man who lived all his life for this world only, became wealthy but did not prepare his soul for the next life. His philosophy was – “eat drink and be merry.” But when his time came to die, God called him a fool and reminded him, “This night your soul will be required of you. Then whose will those things be which you have…?” And the Psalmist added, ”The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” Please don’t be an April fool this year. Make your peace with God by turning to Christ.

Busyness March 29, 2019

Frequently two people are seen at the same table in a restaurant, both on their cell phones, paying no attention to each other. Jack Korning wrote, “when we get too caught up in the busyness of the world, we lose connection with one another—and ourselves.” He could well have added, “and with God.” Someone asked,” Have we allowed pleasure, careers, education etc. to crowd out our time to think about God?” An old gospel song asks a pertinent question, “How long has it been since you talked with the Lord, and … knew He cared for you.?” The Psalmist wrote, “Be still and know that I am God.” That is great advice. Let’s get off our various electronic devices, turn the television off and talk to God. He is waiting for your call

The Elephant March 27, 2019

The elephant, the largest land animal in existence, generates extraordinary fascination for many. Zoos around the world keep them for public viewing. Unfortunately, many of them die due to cold winters and lack of adequate space. Many animal lovers urge that they be set free.” In other words, “If you love them set them free.” Of course, freedom is not only important for animals, but also for people too. Often we feel like an animal in a zoo, bound by habits, problems, relationships. But freedom is available. Jesus has said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” And the truth is that though we are all spiritually needy, Christ has paid our sin debt on the cross, and offers to forgive us and set us free.

The Power of the Cross March 25, 2019

Centuries ago, Portuguese settlers built an enormous cathedral on the south coast of China, with a massive bronze cross on its front wall. When a typhoon destroyed that structure, only the wall and the large cross were left standing. Later in the area, a shipwreck took place in which only one man, Sir John Bowring, survived. Although disoriented, he was guided to land by that huge cross. Bowring has written a hymn which includes the words, “In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time.” For all who are far from God, the Bible explains how Jesus’ cross makes the difference. “And you who were once alienated, yet now He has reconciled…having made peace through the blood of His cross.” Yes, the way of the cross leads home.

The Spitting Cobra March 22, 2019

An African snake, the spitting cobra, spots its prey, spits in its victim’s eyes, and blinds it. Thus the unfortunate victim becomes dinner. This reminds me of the Bible truth in which Paul was inspired to write, “The god of this age (that’s Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers lest the light of the gospel of Christ should shine on them. “ Paul also wrote, “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him.” Disbelieving the good news of the gospel leaves us in spiritual darkness. But Jesus tells us, “I have come into the world that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Royal Birth March 20, 2019

Remember when Prince William and Kate welcomed their first baby, George Alexander Louis in 2013? Now excitement and anticipation is building for the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan’s first child. Over two thousand years ago a baby was born and as befitted a royal birth, He was given multiple names–among them Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, and Immanuel. But we know Him best by the name Jesus, which means, “He shall save His people from their sins.” Paul was inspired to explain the importance of having a proper relationship with Jesus, writing, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Kept Promises March 18, 2019

The winter of 2018-2019 will be remembered for its severe temperatures, storms, and snow. But already, many are making plans for their gardens as they anticipate spring. Did you know that God made this promise many centuries ago? “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold, heat, winter and summer, day and night shall not cease.” We know that God has kept that promise–He always does. He has also made another promise, “Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.”

St. Patrick’s Day 2019 March 15, 2019

This coming Sunday, March 17, millions will remember the man called Saint Patrick. While we don’t know if he was ever canonized, that is not to say he was not a saint, in God’s eyes . The New Testament describes all who have sincerely invited Christ into their lives, as saints. There we read, “To the church of God, to those…called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” So, if Patrick does deserve to be called a saint, it’s not because he was canonized, or because he was a Protestant or a Roman Catholic, but simply because he had met the biblical standard for sainthood. That is, he had acknowledged himself as a sinner, and had asked Christ into his life. Are you a saint?
